  • Quietway 6 Leytonstone Road/Henniker Road/Buxton Road staggered junctions

Created by MonegaCyclist // 1 thread

Quietway 6 Leytonstone Road/Henniker Road/Buxton Road staggered junctions

On the 10th of October 2016, LB Newham proposed to the deal with a staggered junction issue for cycling traffic on the Quietway 6 route with

    1. the installation a new parallel pedestrian crossing (being a zebra pedestrian crossing, together with a crossing point for pedal cycles immediately parallel) on Leytonstone Road with the centre of the crossing to be located 5 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Henniker Road and

    2. Introducing one-way motor vehicle traffic movement on Buxton Road (eastbound only direction) and two-way cycling traffic movements (in both directions).

Revised March 2016 Newham Cyclists proposed Analysis and comments (figures based on QW6 LB Newham report)

    Intervention 28: Henniker Road/Leytonstone Road/Buxton Road

    Traffic count (on Leytonstone Road)

    18900 vehicles per day
1300 vehicles per peak hour = CLoS [Safety/Feeling of safety/Total volume of traffic (cycling traffic not separated)] = ‘Critical’ i.e. volume of motor vehicles (>1000 vehicles/peak hour).

    Average speed
23 – 24 mph (majority of time) = CLoS [Safety/ Feeling of safety/Speed of traffic (cycling traffic not separated)] = ‘Good’ (score = 1)

    NC Suggestions/Recommendations

Signalise and integrate Henniker Road/Leytonstone Road and Leytonstone Road/Buxton Road junctions.

Consider a Point Closure (i.e. Modal Filter) at the Leytonstone Road/Buxton Road junction.

Newham Cyclists previous response to LB Newham

LB Newham have not given much consideration to our key recommendation based on CLoS/JAT analysis – Signalise and integrate Henniker Road/Leytonstone Road and Leytonstone Road/Buxton Road junctions which will ensure that cycling traffic right turns can be made without crossing more than one lane of moving motor traffic in one step (i.e. separation in space and/or in time).

No priority is given to cycling traffic at this staggered junction with a 30mph high traffic major road (i.e. Leytonstone Road).

Conclusion: Newham Cyclists cannot support this junction plan because it doesn’t meet LCC Quietways principles.

Please let us have your suggestions, recommendations or comments by Friday, 28th of October 2016 so as to help Newham Cyclists draft a group response for Wednesday, 2nd of November 2016 deadline. Many thanks.

  • Stratford Town Centre

    Newham council say:

We are working with Transport for London to transform Stratford town centre. This will include introducing two-way traffic around the Stratford Centre, improving bus services, and providing better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Changes to the one-way traffic system will allow for a better flow of traffic and reduce accidents in the area. It will also create a safer and more attractive town centre for everyone to enjoy.
Our plans aim to encourage more people to visit the Broadway, High Street and Cultural Quarter and support our local businesses and cultural venues.

As part of the plans, we want to:
    - introduce a two-way traffic system and road calming measures to reduce speeds
    - create separate cycle tracks to encourage more people to cycle through Stratford
    - widen the pedestrian crossing at Meridian Square and move other crossings to locations where pedestrians prefer to cross
    - improve the appearance of streets by resurfacing pavements, removing old street furniture and introducing new landscaping
    - enhance the public area near Theatre Square and St John’s Church.

  • St Andrew's St - Emmanuel St Junction

Created by Rosalind Lund // 1 thread

further to the piece in newsletter 128, I wonder if any thought has been given to the difficulty of turning right into Emmanuel Street if you are coming towards the town centre from St Andrew's Street? We go fairly often to the Arts Cinema and this is the obvious way for us to go home, but it is impossible to turn right on the correct side of the bollard at present as it is designed only for left turning cycles coming out of town. There is, however, nothing to suggest that such a right turn is illegal.

  • Insufficient Bike Parking at Kingston Hospital

Created by Andy Allan // 0 threads

There's not enough bike parking at Kingston Hospital. When I visited, there were 17 bicycles in the 10-capacity bike parking outside the main entrance, and the nearby parking was full too.

The carparking is often full, but it would be good to convert 2-3 car parking spaces into bicycle parking, since this increases the number of visitors, patients and staff who can access the hospital in the same space.

  • Whiston Road

    Natalie G // 1 thread

The proposals for this route along Whiston Road include:

Removing some of the existing speed cushions and replacing them with raised carriageway
tables. These speed tables will be raised to footway level to provide a traffic calming feature
to assist in reducing the speed of traffic along Whiston Road, making it a safer environment for
    pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Please let us have your comments before 17 October 2016 so that we can draft a group response.

    thanks

  • VeloCity 2021 "Cycling and Health"

    Created by velocipedus@gmail.com // 1 thread

Velocity is an annual cycling conference with approx 1000 attendees from 50 countries. The deadline for the competition to host VeloCity 2019 has passed in August 2016. Now would be a good time to think about 2021 (!) (Odd numbered years in Europe, even numbered years out of Europe)

    https://ecf.com/projects/velo-city

It was previously hosted in Bremen, London, Groningen, Copenhagen, Milano, Montréal, Nottingham, Basel, Perth, Barcelona, Graz & Maribor, Amsterdam, Edinburgh & Glasgow, Paris, Dublin, Munich, Brussels, Copenhagen, Seville, Vancouver, Vienna, Adelaide, Nantes, Taipei, Arnhem & Nijmegen, Rio de Janeiro

Hosting it in Cambridge would have to be done by or through a University (which?). It would have the benefit of bringing together and amplify the academic research already underway in the health area. CEDAR, Centre for Diet and Activity Research would be a major asset. I think there would be a good chance that the Addenbrooks biotechnology firms may see an opportunity to create academic-local community credentials: One of these firms is even called Bicycle Therapeutics with Trinity Master Gregory Winter at the helm.

I met vice chancellor Borysiewicz once and I had the impression that hosting such a event which creates the connection between science and community benefit would suit him very well: He said that cycling is very much on his radar.

Another potential funding source could be the US based Robert Wood Johnson foundation. They give grants in the area of healthy communities with an academic profile, they "very infrequently support foreign organizations or organizations that are not tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code" but one could try.

This is a major project which will need a professional conference organizer. The ECF want EURO 300.000 fees in advance, clearly far beyond the campaign to undertake. But I think it would be for the campaign to get the ball rolling.

If the committee thinks this is a priority I could write some emails to test the waters

  • No drop kerb at Queens Road / University Boulevard.

Created by David Lally // 0 threads

Riders heading north west on Queens Road will want to join the Western Corridor lane here. There is a large ASL box at the lights at the end of Queens Road so it's obviously expected that cyclist will use the road here.

The area was re-surfaced in September but no drop kerb was installed. This will mean riders doing this manoeuvre will have to maintain position in the traffic lane until the Toucan crossing some 40 metres around the corner.

  • Cycle lane parking

    Phil Wigglesworth // 1 thread

"No loading" restrictions don't stop delivery vehicles and taxis parking in the bike lane. This blocks the road for cyclists, exposing them to unnecessary danger. Traffic police are almost absent, which leaves little control over this sort of problem

  • Safe crossing of Alloway Road for new school

Created by Cycling Dumfries // 1 thread

When Schools for the Future moves all of the Lochside schools onto one site, there will need to be a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists to the new site. At present there is a traffic island, but crossing with current levels of traffic is already difficult with children. It is also near a lorry training site so there are learner HGV drivers.

Lochside primary school currently has one of the highest cycling rates of all schools in the county - and the area is one of the more deprived areas in Dumfries, so car ownership levels are low

  • TMP 7196 - North-South City Centre Cycle Route, Nottingham

Created by Iain Lane // 1 thread

Nottingham City Council is looking to encourage the growth of new cycle users within the City,
thus giving a viable alternative to motor vehicles and encouraging a healthier lifestyle for all
citizens. As part of this vision it is proposed to expand the City’s cycle facilities by providing
contra-flow cycle lanes on parts of the carriageways of Friar Lane, Park Row and The Ropewalk,
allowing safe passage for city bound cyclists travelling from the north-west of the city centre.
These are quiet, low trafficked streets ideal for cycling. However, the current restrictions prohibit
cycling in the opposite direction of the one way, therefore compelling cyclists to travel on less
    appropriate routes.
Furthermore, a minor reduction of the Pay & Display parking bays immediately to the south-east
of The Ropewalk/Oxford Street junction will be necessary to accommodate the proposed re-
    construction works to that junction.
For more details please refer to drawing ref: TM/SB/TMP 7196/01
Before proceeding further with these proposals and in accordance with statutory procedures and
policies, I now wish to consider your views regarding this matter. Whilst it may not be possible to
agree to all your suggestions, they will be incorporated into the proposals whenever appropriate
    and economically feasible.
