    Suffolk Design: Streets Guide

    Our consultation is for a new Streets Guide, which will assist designing streets for new residential developments especially by promoting walking and cycling.

    You are invited to comment on the Suffolk Design: Streets Guide by completing the survey.

    The consultation will run from 16 December 2020 until 5pm 10 February 2021.

    What we are consulting on

    This emerging guidance will assist with the design of new residential developments showing how best to create sustainable transport layouts that promote walking and cycling

    The District, Borough and County Councils of Suffolk have been working to improve the design new development through the Suffolk Design initiative. As part of this programme, the County Council commissioned Stantec to produce a new Street Guide to update guidance for residential streets.

    Attached is a draft of the emerging Street Design Guide and you are invited to shape the final version of the document.

    Next Steps

    Following an eight week public consultation on Suffolk Design: Streets Guide, a report of the consultation will be published when the Streets Guide is presented to Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet.

  • Mapping out Cycling Infrastructure Proposals for Hammersmith and Fulham

    In order to create a safe cycling and active transport environment we need to point out what we need, where.

    In line with the policy announcement from Grant Shapps MP changes should be urgent and immediate so this is a space to plan, map them out and look at detail. We have the benefit of this being a forum where we have access to a lot of expertise in technical detail so feel free to suggest, upload photos, discuss, wish.

  • Cambridge South West Travel Hub

    GCP project:

    Junction 11 of the M11 is a key entry point into Cambridge. With significant growth in housing and employment in the area, upgrading the existing transport infrastructure in this area is vital to reduce congestion and improve access into the city.

    Congestion impacts on current bus journey times making journeys unreliable, unattractive and longer than necessary, as well as affecting the convenience and comfort of cycling trips on the corridor.

    By expanding the existing Travel Hub in Trumpington and creating more Travel Hub provision (either by creating multi-storey parking at the Trumpington site or a new Travel Hub to the west of Junction 11), car drivers can be encouraged to complete their journeys by bus. More Travel Hub use would help the flow of traffic and make employment sites such as the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, West and North Cambridge easier to reach.

    A consultation on increasing Travel Hub spaces to the south west of Cambridge ran until 21 December 2018. Thank you to those who attended our events and responded to the consultation. We will now collate the responses and publish a report in the Spring of 2019.

    The Cambridge South West Travel Hub Project is a component of the West of Cambridge package, which includes review and development options for Travel Hub facilities, creation of new Travel Hub locations, and enhancement or upgrade of existing facilities.

  • Difficult crossing at airport way roundabout

    There are better-than-average cycle paths either side of this junction, but actually crossing at this point is very difficult because there is a near-constant stream of vehicular traffic leaving the roundabout to head into town.

    Alternative routes (avoiding this crossing) involve lengthy detours.

    Islington Council is planning to introduce a School Street Scheme and left turn ban to improve air quality around Winton Primary School and create a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone. The Council would like to hear your thoughts on the proposal.

    What is proposed for Killick Street and Collier Street? The proposal is to trial a temporary road closure on Killick Street, between Southern Street and Collier Street, and Collier Street, between Killick Street and Calshot Street, between 8.30am-9.15am and 3.15pm-4.00pm during school term time. A no left turn will also operate on Southern Street during those times.

    Vehicles will not be able to enter the streets between these times unless they have been given an exemption. Residents and businesses who live and work on a school street will be able to register for an exemption as well as Blue Badge holders. The scheme will not operate in the school holidays or at weekends.


    Signs will inform drivers of the restrictions before the entrance to the closed street. Non-registered vehicles entering the street during the times of operation may be identified by camera and issued a penalty charge notice.

  • Bridge Moore Avenue

    There is a foot bridge in Moore Avenue, which is very difficult for cycles and push chairs to negotiate, it is heavily used every day especially since the new Joseph Rowntree houses have been built. I have already contacted York Council to see if it would be possible to have the chicane access removed they have told me they cannot do this because they don't know who owns the bridge.

    Changes to make school crossing better.
    "Concerns have been raised through the St Mary’s Church of England School Travel Plan regarding the lack of a safe place to cross the road outside of the middle site for the school.

    Officers assessed conditions at the end of school time and found that parents and pupils currently cross in random locations and often between parked cars where sightlines are reduced. Concerns were also raised regarding vehicles travelling at inappropriate speeds."

  • Walthamstow Town Centre. Hoe Street

    "We’re working in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to deliver a range of improvements to make the Hoe Street and Selborne Road junction a more attractive, safer and better transport interchange for all.

    "We've been working closely with TfL and Network Rail to install a new traffic bridge to replace the existing Victorian-era structure. The first stage of the bridge installation is now complete. This means that costly future maintenance work that would require total closure of the gyratory area, from the Selborne Road and Hoe Street junction to First Avenue, has been avoided. The Network Rail (former road bridge) is being converted into a public space.

    We're now asking local residents, businesses and road users to help us decide on the final look and feel of the public areas the project will create.

    The town centre transport improvements will improve journey times and overall reliability, increase access for pedestrians and cyclists, and create public green spaces to boost air quality.

    Hoe Street railway bridge: create a new public space with high quality surface finishes, seating, space for market stalls and kiosks, trees and planting.
    Hoe Street junction with Station Approach junction: new trees and plants in level and raised beds

  • Massey Close: cyclist dismount and bollards

    The Massey Close exit to Churchill Drive is cyclist unfriendly. Bollards are too narrow for an average cyclist, let alone a cyclist with a trailer. The angle from the bollards to the railings on the other side is very hard for a cyclist to navigate. From the other direction there is a cyclists dismount sign.

  • New bus stop(s) on Addenbrookes site

    A new bus stop has been created on Francis Crick Avenue just south of the junction with the busway on the east side. The problem is that there's a mandatory cycle lane there. Currently buses park in the cycle lane. It's also only 10m from the toucan crossing.

    According to http://www.thebusway.info/pdfs/maps/trumpington.pdf there might also be another stop outside the MRC on the west side, also with a mandatory cycle lane.
