As described in the winter 2019 Camcycle magazine there is a group working on getting some improvements to the Trumpington busway. The magazine concentrates on the northern end of the busway but we are also seeking upgrades to the Addenbrookes spur junction and the crossing at Hobson Avenue/Lime Avenue as well as adding pedestrian footpath from the Hills Road Bridge all the way to Drury Avenue.
The group would like to start getting this out to users of the path for input, discussion and help with campaigning. Many Biomedical Campus commuters presumably use this path frequently, even daily. It would be great to get some input.

London Borough of Hounslow is consulting on the provision of secure cycle parking in residential streets around the borough.
The council has recently installed an on-street bikehangar in Chiswick at Ashbourne Grove and has received further requests from several residents nearby. Bikehangars offer secure cycle parking for residents in areas where the ability to safely store bikes within a property, or the front/rear garden, is limited. This is part of the council’s commitment to encourage more sustainable forms of transport for daily journeys. The council covers the installation cost of new bikehangars via an annual grant allocation from Transport for London to increase cycle parking provision in the borough, there is a rental fee per year of £72 per space, plus a deposit for a key (£25). The allocation of spaces is managed by the council’s contractor, Cyclehoop, who also look after ongoing maintenance.
Each new installation is the subject of a separate consultation. This is presumably because of the sensitivity of residents to any reduction in the number of parking spaces for cars.

I will be running four Wheel Building Workshops in Cambridge during 2020 (dates on website). It makes a great Christmas present for anyone who is a keen cyclist, or interested in cycle maintenance and repair.
Potential redesign of junction looks very poor - The usual set of issues with cars cutting across bikes, no real segregation, lanes starting/stopping etc. etc. etc.

Really exciting proposals for Meadow Lane leading over Leeds Bridge and to the Corn Exchange.
Currently meadow lane is an inner city dual carriageway. It is proposed that it will become a single carriageway in each direction for motor vehicles and the space repurposed into pedestrian and cycle facilities. Consultation is now closed but it still needs to go to detailed design stage. Full details can be seen at the attached web link.
Changes are proposed on a 1km section of the A660 due to delays to buses caused by congestion. An outbound bus lane is proposed between Victoria Road to just past Bainbridge Road. Cycleway is retained on inbound section, but outbound section would be shared with buses. 20 buses per hour would use the bus lane at peak times. Difficult one for the campaign this? Is a 24hr 3.5m bus lane preferable to a 1m advisory cycle lane? Majority of bus lane is downhill.
Particular discussion points were ensuring that the cycle lane continues over side roads, even though the bus lane stops, and querying a two stage pedestrian crossing (should be one stage). Plans still at early stage so will likely return to the forum.

We would like your views on highways improvements on Wood Vale.
Residents have told us that they would like to see reduced speeds and less through traffic on Wood Vale so we have put together a proposal to tackle these issues that we would now like your feedback on. We would especially like to know if you think the designs could be improved or if we have missed any opportunities.

Separately from this consultation, please note that Melford Road carriageway resurfacing has been reprogrammed for the 16th of January. Separate notification will be issued for this work closer to the scheduled implementation date.

The permissive route between Shire Hall and Magrath Avenue has issues (not the least of which being there are steps) however it does cut through the middle of what is otherwise an overly large block between Victoria Road and Chesterton Lane. There is also some irony in the fact that it appears to be the last remnants of a way that was once a Roman Road from Castle Hill heading due north.
Naturally, it is under threat from the sale of Shire Hall. We received the following e-mail:
Can you help ? As you may be aware the County Council has leased the
Shire hall and some of the surrounding buildings to a development
company. At present the situation regarding public access to the
permissive path that runs between the top of McGrath Avenue and Castle
Hill remains unclear. There is to be a public meeting sometime in
December or early January where Suffolk County Council as arbitrator
will take submissions.
Some neighbours and I are collecting data on the numbers of pedestrians
and cyclists that use the cut through during rush hours - at present the
number of journeys made per hour range from 116 (49 cyclists) to 149 (69
cyclists)which is just over 2 journeys per minute.
Thus as you can see closing this path would be a tremendous loss to the
local community forcing many people into taking busier routes along
Victoria Road and other major routes increasing the risk of accidents.

From 20th November until 18th December contractors Sf Stefan will be laying broadband fibre on Royal College Street. This will affect the northbound with-flow cycle lane. As far as possible, a segregated cycle lane will be maintained by closing parking bays and using barriers to make a cycle lane in the main carriageway but there may be a few locations where cyclists temporarily have to use the main carrigeway.

There's a whole bunch of locations reported for this Cambridge Cow sculpture exhibit.
I've already spotted one that gets too close to a dropped kerb in Station Square. More eyes needed to look through all the proposed locations.
From Monday 25th November to Monday 2nd December Gower Street will be closed from Grafton Way to between Torrington Place and Chenies Street for resurfacing. There will be no access for motor vehicles nor cyclists and both University Street and Torrington Place will be closed with diversions in operation. This will obvously have a major impact on the E-W cycle route on Tavistock Place/Torrington Place. Details of diversion routes are shown in the attached thread.
Then from December 2nd until Monday 9th the works move south and Gower Street will be closed from north of Chenies Street to mid-way down Bedford Square. The E-W cycle route on Tavistock Place/Torrington Place will re-open. This should have less impact but there will still be local diversions.
From 25th November to 23rd December one lane of Eversholt Street will be closed between Phoenix Road and Drummond Crescent for work on a 16" water main. Traffic will be two-way but controlled by signals and therefore is likely to be even more congested than usual. In addition, Phoenix Road will be closed so cyclists will need to use Polygon Road to access Somers Town and Ossulston Street.
Update 27/11/19 - now deferred till 2020
To reduce through traffic in the Hills and Vales area of West Greenwich.
Two options are offered:-
1. 4 Modal filters and a one way road.
2. 2 modal filters 2 one ways and a timed restriction with camera control on Hyde vale.
Even very narrow lanes in this area are used by rat running vehicles, often at unsuitable speeds, so removal of through traffic will improve the area.

The Colne and Crane Green Infrastructure Strategy includes a proposed new walking and cycling link between Rickmansworth Station and the Colne Valley Trail at Rickmansworth Aquadrome. At its meeting on November 4th 2019, Batchworth Community Council set up a project to ensure that this new route was implemented via Rickmansworth Town Centre, in line with two of Rickmansworth Parish Councillors' strategies.
This would involve designing the preferred route via Bury Lane, Rickmansworth and then part-funding Hertfordshire County Council to create it.
This shows the course of the preferred route, which is open to a phased implementation as funds permit.

This is a suggestion to create a Dutch style cycle map for the area around Cambridge and get the waypoints and routes marked on the ground to help navigation by bike, and then use it to measure progress on creating better routes.
Plans to improve Rushgrove Park include a new crossing of the Silkstream near Colindeep Lane, with a new access point on Colindeep Lane, joining with the existing route following the western side of the park to emerge on Crossway. The draft masterplan describes this as the "primary shared cycle and footpath with seasonal tree avenue".

Plans to improve Colindale Park include a 3.2m wide shared-use pedestrian/cyclist path linking Colindale Station and Sheaveshill Avenue.
It is described in the draft masterplan as a commuting route - it's actually the 250m long path at the NE edge of the park.

London Borough of Brent and London Borough of Camden will submit a joint application to Transport for London's Liveable Neighbourhood programme in November 2018, which will incorporate suggestions made by the community."
Brent Cyclists are forming our own response, to be sent by end of October 2018.
The Council has successfully secured funding from Transport for London (TfL) to improve safety for all road users along the whole length of Billet Road. In the last 5 years a total of 62 accidents which involved injuries and fatalities were recorded making this a particular unsafe area within the Borough. The scheme aims to reduce accidents along the road whilst improving the overall safety for all road users.
In September and October 2015, we sent a survey to local people asking them to identify problems along the road and to tell us what they would like to see to help improve road safety. The results of the survey showed that people were most concerned about crossing the road, getting around the area and not feeling safe when travelling along the road.
The top improvements people would like to see were; slower traffic, safer crossing points, protected cycle lanes and better pavements.
We also asked Emergency Services about the issues they faced and what they would like to see to help improve road safety.
Based on the results of the survey and the feedback from Emergency Services we have
developed a set of proposals that aim to make improvements for all road users:
• Bus stop improvements to provide better access for passengers including disabled users.
• Improve and raise the existing zebra and signal crossings.
• A new raised zebra crossing on Billet Road near Cecil Road.
• 20mph speed limit along Billet Road.
• Better and energy efficient street lighting.
• Tree planting and footway resurfacing along the road.
• A new raised road table at Billet Road’s junction with Guildway to reduce traffic speed.
• Two-way, fully segregated east and west cycle track.
• New ‘floating’ style bus stop to improve safety for cyclists and bus passengers.
• Raised areas at junctions that prioritise pedestrians and slow traffic down.
• De-cluterring of street furniture such as removing redundant posts and signs along Billet Road and side road entrances.
• Parking bays relocated at certain unsafe locations along the road to be converted to
segregated cycle track. New parking bays will be provided nearby.
• Various waiting and loading restriction at locations of concern to improve road safety
and ensure smooth flow of traffic.
• Anti-skid surface to help prevent vehicles from skidding.
Please note there are also a number of locations on the road where future improvements works will be happening outside of this scheme. These are highlighted as ‘future improvement works’ on the plan.

Manchester City Council Development strategy for the Ancoats and New Islington Areas. Includes development and urban design principles, and will be a "material consideration" in determinng planning applications.
A recent announcement about the funding of 6000 new residential units by ADUG in this part of Manchester increases the need to ensure that cycling is given due prominence in this strategy.
Proposed off-road cycle path following the A323, Norris Hill Road, to link Fleet with the existing cycle-path from Norris Bridge towards the centre of Farnborough.
It would enable cyclists to avoid Norris Hill Road, an unlit road with speed limit of 60 mph. Once built it would be possible to cycle from Fleet to Farnborough without cycling on roads.

Leaving Zoology Department 18.15 walking east on Downing St, north side on 23 January, 2014. Car stopped in Downing st just west of Corn exchange road junction, obscuring the light. Lying on the road was a road sign warning cars of road works further left in Corn Exchange St, a needless warning. This 1 metre road sign had been placed on the pavement, occluding it seriously and had been, presumably, knocked over and left lying on the pavement with its black and invisible legs raised up about 10cm from the surface and its reflective surface tilted away (see picture). I tripped over the road sign in the dark and fell forwards injuring my face and forehead; the metal cut into my right leg. My glasses are destroyed, the leg of the sign tore my shoes.
I was taken to Addenbrookes and treated there. I left there ca 20.30 with head injuries and abrasions and now have an impressive black eye and surround.
I am seeking redress. I am exploring legal action against the County Council whose idiotic health and safety rules (for drivers, not for the rest of us) say that drivers should be warned in advance of even highly visible roadworks (in a 20mph area) and the company responsible for placing such a flimsy and dangerous sign right in the middle of a narrow pavement. Also am anxious that in general people who leave road traffic signs occluding the pavement or creating dangerous obstacles there, should be held responsible and penalised. I see these road signs often as I walk around Cambridge, they should be on or above the road, not blocking the pavement in my opinion.
The next day the same road sign, with my blood still on it, was back in the middle of pavement waiting to be knocked over again and even now forcing pedestrians to avoid it by diverting on to the roadway. I attach a photo of it taken on Friday the day following my accident with a diverted pedestrian on the right.
It was again fallen on the ground waiting to kill someone on Saturday night, presumably following the afternoon storms.

A shared-used area runs parallel to Park End Street across Frideswide Square, fronting the Saïd Business School. This offers an alternative approach to the station, and allows cyclists approaching from the city centre to avoid manoeuvres across two roundabouts.
There is however a lack of a properly aligned, clearly marked refuge between the two streams of traffic on Hythe Bridge Street at the point where cyclists would seek to cross into this shared space.
Various issues in Cambridge regarding bus driving and cyclist interactions. Work needs to be done to deal with this.

Footpath 32 is to be converted to be a bridleway. The footpath runs at the edge of a field parallel to the Wheathampstead road from the Hertswood Forest car park entrance to Nomansland. It will have a garpack surface for cycling/walking and a larger strip of grass for horse riding.
Funding comes largely from a Paths For Communities grant with other contributions from local sources.
Previously, there was an Advanced Stop Line on Kew Gardens Road (B353) where it joins Kew Road (A307). The junction was recently resurfaced, which removed the ASL markings, and they have not been replaced. I have attached a Google Streetview photo showing the ASL that was previously present.
The ASL marking was very useful, as the junction can become gridlocked in rush hour, so that only cycles can take advantage of the green signal from Kew Gardens Road without blocking the junction. Cyclists therefore need the space to be able to safely wait at the front of the queue.
It would be great if the ASL markings could be restored as soon as possible. If they have been removed for a reason, then I would like to understand what the justification is.
Eastbound cyclists wishing to avoid the double roundabout at this point are routed onto the pavement, across the exit for the Shell garage (often to the surprise of exiting drivers), and then (still across pavement) onto a piece of decommissioned road used as access and double-sided parking for a parade of shops. This road has a separate car entrance from the roundabout.
Its a lethal combination -I have personally once been hit by a car turning fast from the roundabout on the road entrance as I entered it from the bike route. The driver was very angry because it was my fault that she didn't look out for me. You then have to cycle between two sets of parked cars/vans: there are frequent hazards: suddenly opened doors, people reversing/leaving the parking place without looking behind.
At the end, the cyclist is signed again onto pavement heavily used by schoolchildren/old people at the eastbound Heath Road Roundabout bus stop, before being routed back onto the road along the pull-off for the bus itself.
My personal view is that this scheme has been created and signed by a maniac
There is a group of councils and others (including the RAC) calling itself A47 Alliance with a website at http://www.a47alliance.co.uk/ calling for a road upgrade.
The A47 is a significant barrier to cycling in many places, such as the single-carriageway stretch from Tilney All Saints near King's Lynn to Swaffham that blocks several desired east-west cycle routes - it is narrow with much heavy HGV traffic, so it's a challenge to cross and feels no fun for most people to ride along. It is possible that any upgrades could be "cycle-proofed" (to use current jargon) to unblock these routes.
KLWNBUG has asked if CycleNation and CTC groups can be be invited to join the alliance.
Tower Hamlets Council is committed to making the borough a safer place for all road users by delivering a range of street improvements in the area; intending to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and public transport users alike.
Residents of Beaumont Square and the surrounding area raised concerns about rat-running and the problems it causes in local streets. You may remember that the Council previously consulted residents on traffic management proposals to reduce traffic speed in the area; many of which were strongly supported and have now been implemented. A number of additional ideas were also put forward by residents which have now been considered and we would appreciate your opinion on whether they should be introduced.
One of the problems is the level of traffic trying to avoid the traffic lights at the A11 Mile End Road/White Horse Lane junction. Drivers cut through either Beaumont Square or Eastbury Terrace through to Beaumont Grove to join A11 Mile End Road junction causing safety concerns, particularly for the nursery and nuisance to local properties. In addition, Beaumont Grove suffers problems relating to parking for surrounding shops and takeaways.

Fleet Road is a one-way street with heavy motor traffic and no protected cycle infrastructure. This means that people cycling through the area face unpleasant interactions with motor vehicles as well as needing to make diversions to reach destinations in the area,
A twenty metre stretch of advisory cycle lane at the end of Whiteladies Road, from a zebra crossing to its junction with Queens Road, encourages cyclists to take a position near to the curb as they enter the and leave the junction. This puts them exposed to frequent buses turning immediately left into Queens Avenue and in a vulnerable position from which to continue a journey south west towards Park Street or Park Row.

Two-way traffic for cyclists on Barbican Terrace-Litchdon Street, allowing to cycle from the Strand to Summerland Street
Any other side road treatments failing already? do they need to be laying drainage kerbing?
Ranty Highwayman has a note on them. Given the flooding that is prone on the ring road probably need to be pushing this with KM for the side roads that will be built to get them spec'd up to include the drainage.
At the moment there are toucan crossings from the Whitesands up to the High Street past the lower entrance to the Loreburne Centre (where the buses stop) but there is no actual cycle path so you end up illegally on the pavement. It would be a useful route otherwise, as long as cyclists can get past the bus stops (and waiting bus passengers).
Access to and return journey from the Crematorium is a real challenge for the cyclist. Indeed, chances are you may end up in it if you try to ride your bike there.
Here we have a essential public service which is accessible by car only. Is this acceptable ?
These issues arise also if a convoy of bicycles was to accompany a coffin.
What is to be done?
The North-South Cycle Superhighway is already under construction between Stonecutter Street and Elephant & Castle.
TfL, together with Camden and Islington Councils, is now consulting on proposals to extend it north up to King’s Cross.
The proposal is that it should continue north on Farringdon Road to Greville Street where northbound cyclists would turn onto a quiet back-street route to King’s Cross.
Southbound cyclists from King’s Cross would turn off the back-street route onto Farringdon Road at Ray Street via a new signalised junction and continue south on a stepped cycle track.

This morning I noticed that two new concrete bollards have been installed at the North end of the Carter Cycle Bridge. These seem to be completely unnecessary and the position will probably cause accidents to cyclists descending into Devonshire Road.
Were the Campaign aware of this and can we do anything to get them removed?
Bike users can turn right and cycle contra flow using a very narrow on road cycle path. Motorised traffic cannot do this, Park Road is one way to motorised traffic. Traveling down Queens Road there is no signage to suggest that bike users can turn right. Once into Park
Road there is awkward raised 'island' to manoeuvre around. Suggest signage saying right turn for bikes only and reconsider design of Island to make it less of an obstacle.
