  • Make Sheen Lane, from Park Gate to Mortlake Railway station, a safe route for cycling to school

Created by timlennon // 0 threads

Sheen Lane provides access to a number of schools, yet is a busy route with no space allocated for cycling. It should be safe for children to make their way to the numerous local schools by bicycle, and it would open up access to Richmond Park for visitors who wanted to cycle from Mortlake Station. Measures such as 20mph and traffic calming are needed here, along with re-alignment of parking..

  • Cycling to School in St Margarets and North Twickenham

Created by Kate // 1 thread

There are three schools in this ward (St. Stephens Primary, Orleans Primary, Richmond Upon Thames College) and more just on the edge of the ward boundaries (Chase Bridge, St Mary’s, Ivybridge, Worple Primary, Orleans Secondary) and there is a lot of traffic. Children should be able to cycle to them safely without having to share space with high volume, fast moving traffic. The roads surrounding these schools should all have 20mph zones including larger roads such as St Margarets Road, which is a heavily used link between areas. There should be car-free access around the schools, and protected routes to arrive there. In due course there should be a default 20 mile an hour limit on all residential roads in the borough.

  • Sheen Lane Traffic Calming

Sheen Lane provides access to a number of schools, yet is a busy route with no space allocated for cycling. It should be safe for children to make their way to the numerous local schools by bicycle, and it would open up access to Richmond Park for visitors who wanted to cycle from Mortlake Station. The junction with the South Circular is especially unpleasant for both cycling and walking, and deeply unwelcoming.

How to do this: Raised zebra crossing at Vicarage Road, Palmerston Road and E Sheen Library, 20 mph signs to continue park speed limit to Mortlake station, removal of centre lane white lines, toucan crossing at A205 to allow cyclists to cross, with care, at same time as pedestrians, advanced stop boxes at level crossing and A205 junction, wider pavement on East side between York Way and Wayside - should be wide enough for a pushchair, improved signage and right turn access to North/South Worple Way - these are underused ward quiet routes leading to several primary schools and nurseries.
Sheen Lane is a key route in the ward, cycle volume could increase dramatically with some minor road improvements. Calming and reducing traffic on Sheen Lane would encourage recreational and school commuting cyclists to use this route more frequently. Sheen Lane as a pleasant cycle route would provide quiet cycle link routes to many schools; Tower house, Thomson House, Sheen Mount, Barnes, Ibstock, Mary Magdalens and also link together tens of miles of Thames Path and Richmond Park traffic free routes that could be enjoyed by cyclists from 8 - 80. It would attract more recreational cyclists to get off at Mortlake station and spend money and time on our high street.

  • Link Staines Rd - Uxbrige Rd round golf course

Created by Andrew Woodward // 2 threads

There is currently a cycle track to the David Lloyd sports centre from the Staines Rd; which turns into a muddy track, blocked at the exit to Uxbridge Road by a difficult and narrow gate.
Upgrading this short section of path with decent surfacing, streetlighting and removal of obstacles would provide a good link from the cycling facilities on the A316 and the Staines Road onto the schools in Hampton.

  • Dean Rd - Longford Close bridge

Created by Andrew Woodward // 1 thread

The bridge between Dean Rd and Longford Close is currently a pedestrian only bridge, marked no cycling. Coupled with other improvements, provision of a decent facility here that could be used by cyclists with minimal conflict with pedestrians would open up a decent quiet route from the schools in Hampton (Hampton Academy, Hampton Boys, LEH) to the A316 cycle route.

  • Safe access to school for children cycling

Created by timlennon // 0 threads

Facilities to cycle to school are extremely limited, mostly involving sharing pavements which are busy in the morning. Lots of dropping of by car in a very restricted area, and disjointed, incomplete routes, especially around the South Circular, where no-one really wants to cycle, least of all with children.

  • cycle crossing unmarked

    Created by Paul L // 0 threads

A crossing of sorts has been made from Burtons Rd across the busy Uxbridge Road to access Longford Close from where a bridge across the Longford River provides access to Hampton (schools).

The tramline paving is in place to show shared use of the footway but no visual signing. (We have raised this with the council to no effect).

  • Thames towpath - Richmond-Ham

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

The towpath from Richmond to Teddington lock is currently unappealing and dangerous. These photos were taken in May and the path is a lot worse after in winter or after a spring tide.

It is sufficient for people on mountain bikes who do not mind getting muddy, but not easy for children, older people, less confident cyclists, pedestrians with buggies, cyclists on cargo bikes etc to navigate - basically all the vulnerable road users who would most benefit from avoiding the busy, fast moving traffic on the narrow winding Petersham Road.

I take this route to work and I have to plan for the fact that I will get covered in mud every morning, and take it very slowly because it is so bumpy. I have seen pedestrians and those with child buggies climbing over the flood wall and walking on the grass on Petersham field in order to avoid this path. When I have my child in the bike seat I get off and walk the section between Ham House and River Lane that is pictured as I don't feel safe.

With a bit of thought this path has the potential to be an excellent car-free cycling and walking route that would tempt people out of their traffic jammed cars on Petersham Road.

  • Roundabout by Radnor Gardens

Created by Chris Ruse // 2 threads

I think I’m correct in saying that several months ago the kerb at the junction of Strawberry Vale and Waldegrave Road was realigned with the result that the cycle lane that had previously continued up to the stop line was cut short at the point where the kerb was realigned. Photo 1341 -1 shows this quite clearly. I cycle along this road fairly frequently and had recognised this as a dangerous point for a cyclist but did nothing about it other than taking care. On Monday however my alertness paid off as a large lorry overtook me about 8 – 9 metres back from the stop line. Had I not braked hard it would have undoubtedly have hit me. The alignment of the kerb creates a pinch point which a cyclist is funnelled into without any warning.

It appears to me that the needs of cyclists have been ignored in the redesign of this junction and that a road safety hazard has been created.

  • Shared Path to Vine Rd Rec

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

The path from Westfields Avenue to Vine Road rec is by and large wide enough to be converted to a shared use path; and would provide another route to the play area; nursery and on to Barnes Station. Plenty of people already cycle on it.

  • Star and Garter Hill

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

Can we include the Star and Garter Hill in our list of shared footpaths (actually a footway in this case). Slow-moving cyclists travelling up the hill from Petersham Gate to Richmond Gate have difficulty with fast passing cars on the hill who overtake too closely. This does not occur in the downhill direction because cyclists can travel much faster. The suggested solution is to permit cycling on the footway up the hill only. There are very few pedestrians and in any case the cyclists will necessarily be travelling very slowly so they would cause no problems. The traffic signals at the bottom of the hill would need some alteration to facilitate cyclists crossing from the Petersham Road onto the footway up the hill.

  • Petersham Road

Created by Dylan // 1 thread

There is a fairly good cycle lanes from Kingston towards Richmond up until you reach the Richmond Council border where Richmond Road (A307) turns into the Upper Ham Road (A307) and eventually Petersham Road (A307). At traffic lights along this route there are reserved areas for cyclists but along the roads there is nothing to remind drivers that cyclists share the road especially when the road narrows after Sandy Lane through Petersham. The road surface here is terrible and the speed bumps are pointless because some driver sprint between the bumps.

The best solution would be to remove the cyclists from this route altogether by upgrading the Thames Path to create a proper cycle path along the River Thames towards Richmond that currently stops at Teddington Lock. If a cycle/foot bridge linking Ham with Twickenham was built over Eel Pie along this route it would create an obvious link for those want to reach Twickenham.

  • Queens Road - pavement cycling school run

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

Doing the school run on bikes - with hiviz, helmets and cycling on the pavement. Queens Road, Richmond, northbound. Cyclists feel vulnerable due to high traffic volumes. There is a wide pavement and wide road here; with enough space to create a dedicated cyclepath.

  • Sheen Road - more pavement cycling

Created by Andrew Woodward // 1 thread

This dad with kids in a trailer clearly doesn't feel safe enough to use the bike lane so he cycles on the pavement. Probably because he's on the way to one of the 7 schools or nurseries near to this route; and the cars are doing 40mph on that nice wide road. This is a regular sight on this route.

  • Cumberland Rd Kew - one way street

Created by Andrew Woodward // 1 thread

This street provides the main access way to both Queen’s CE Primary School and Kew College (private school). Because it is currently one-way; anyone wishing to cycle to these schools from the south is forced to cycle north up Leyborne Park, onto the A205 (or the narrow pavement-based cycle path) and then down Cumberland Road. This puts some significant extra distance onto the journey, plus the unpleasantness of cycling alongside the A205. Similarly, for those leaving these schools to travel north, they are forced to travel south for the length of Cumberland Road and then turn back up Leyborne Park – again adding unnecessary distance and effectively making cycling a very inconvenient way of getting to these schools. • Unmarked path to Richmond Park from Queen's Road

Created by MB // 1 thread

There is a useful but unmarked path from Queen's Road to Richmond Park and through to Sheen. It is used by pedestrians and cyclists & I have never seen it on any map! From Lower Grove Road, it takes you to the park via Bog Gate, or Sheen via Sheen Common.

If it were better marked on maps, better maintained & wider in places, it could form a useful section of Richmond's (paved, segregated, Dutch style?) cycling network.
