  • A19 Southbound at Germany Beck pinch point

Created by Mick Allan // 1 thread

Cyclists travelling southwards on the approach to Germany Beck Spine rd are seriously pinched by traffic. Drivers have always sped up here as they near the 40mph zone with the promise of the ring road beyond. With the recent addition of traffic lights at this point they are even more inclined to speed up for fear of being delayed by a changing traffic light. There's a nominal slip road for traffic making a left turn (towards Fordlands and GB estate) and the lane narrows like a funnel at this point. To make matters worse the mild sweep to the right and a slight change in slope on the approach to this point makes it very difficult to see that the road gets narrower. There's also a drain cover precisely on the apex of the pinch point which requires bicyclists to make a choice - ride over the drain cover or pull out to go around it. Riders who adopt a strong primary position going through this junction, but those who ride in the gutter will get squeezed. And there's certainly not enough space for a car to make a safe pass of a cyclist here. The idea of riding through here with a truck or a bus on my arse fills me with dread. It's an accident waiting to happen.

  • Pinch point created by unnecessary build-out

Created by TMiles // 1 thread

There is a risk of conflict between motorists and cyclists due to the narrowing of the carriageway in the vicinity of a pedestrian crossing on Headley Way southbound. As the crossing is signal-controlled, this feature provides no addition safety or comfort to pedestrians, and should be eliminated.

  • Cycle Lane Through Pinch Point, QR20

Created by Rob Earl // 1 thread

The painted cycle lane through this pinch point gives the impression a car and a bike can pass through together (either in the same or opposite directions). It is way too narrow for this to be safe.

  • Pinch point A65 Rawdon

Created by WillC // 0 threads

Road narrows at pedestrian island; pavement cut away but insufficient and not usable because of surface. Creates danger as it suggest to vehicles that there is more space than there is. Passing cyclists is dangerous.

  • Pinch point where Clerkenwell Road crosses Farringdon Road

Created by Shaun McDonald // 1 thread

As a cyclist it's pretty horrible to cycle along Clerkenwell Road due to it being much narrower than it used to be, or could be due to the ultra wide pavements.

West bound there is a bit of 2 lane queuing preventing cyclists getting past. Eastbound just before the lights the Island is in the way forcing cyclists to merge with motors.

  • Sheen Road - Pinch Point

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

Pinch point outside Courtlands on Sheen Road. Despite resurfacing, pinch point has not been addressed. Because of the poor road layout vehicles frequently encroach into the cycle lane. At off peak times the wide road encourages speeding - vehicles often approach this pinch point at 40mph.

  • Upper Richmond Rd West / Sheen Rd v2

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

Pinch-point at zebra crossing where cyclists are forced to share space with traffic that is often speeding. Cars try to squeeze past cyclists or brake suddenly. Cars frequently speed up to 40mph on approach to this crossing.

  • Berkeley Place/Triangle West Pinch-Point, Bristol

Created by Sam Saunders // 1 thread

New lights and crossings have been installed and pedestrians have recently been given a much safer way to cross Berkeley Place from west to east. The build-out near the end of Procathedral Lane has narrowed the roadway and made the pedestrian crossing time much shorter than it was. The two traffic lanes heading north east out of Berkeley Place are each now reduced to about 2.9 metres wide, leaving very little, or no space for a vehicle to pass a cyclist or for a cyclist to approach the ASL when traffic is stationary. The upward incline can make this even more awkward for a cyclist who needs to stop and then restart from a position behind or alongside vehicles south west of the build-out.

  • Pinch Point On Northumberland Road, Bristol

Created by Sam Saunders // 1 thread

Northumberland Road (part of Concord Way at this point) has been deliberately narrowed to allow pedestrians to cross between the footbridge and the Sports Centre and a cycle lane marking has been placed to one side of the narrow gap. The gap, however, is not wide enough to allow a car and a bicycle to go safely through the pinch point at the same time. A cyclist needs to take the centre of the lane, or pull over and wait for vehicles to pass.

Either the carriageway should be re-widened (preferred) or the cycle lane indicator should be removed.

  • Why no cycle lanes on A65 in Rawdon?

Created by WillC // 0 threads

A65 in Rawdon is wide with few side roads. It needs cycle lanes. Southbound in morning staggered queuing traffic makes if hard to wiggle down to the ring road roundabout. There is ample width and no reason not to add cycle lanes. Ther are however 3 pinch points associated with middle pestrian refuges that are dangerous. There are cut-outs into pavement area to apparenlty widen the road here but the cut-outs are very poorly surfaced and unusable. Vehicles passing cyclists at the pinch-points regularly cause danger (personally experienced several times a week, one very nearly fatally).

  • No cycle bypass on The Hollow upper pinch point

    Created by t1mmyb // 0 threads

There is a pair of traffic-calming chicanes/pinch points on The Hollow. The one lower down the hill (where drivers must give way to downhill traffic) has a cycle bypass; the one further up the hill (where ascending traffic has priority) does not.

When I cycle up The Hollow I am probably managing about 5mph; this pinch point brings me into conflict with much faster motorised traffic going up the hill, to the extent that I usually avoid the road completely and take a different route (Southdown Road) that has no traffic islands/pinchpoints.
