A radical idea maybe, but why not close the narrow, one-way, Lower Castle Street to cars and make it two-way for bikes and pedestrians? It would
1) solve the problem of the confusing junction at the bottom end.
2) remove the very complex routing of routes 42&46
3) avoid cyclists cutting though the pedestrian zone and one-way part of cross street when travelling east across town.

The cycle gate where route 46 enters castle meadows near the castle is poorly designed: very tight for long bikes such as tandems.

School traffic from King Henry VIII School, exiting the school onto Pen-y-Pound, uses this very narrow route as a quicker way, at a busy times, of getting to the A40 or to Old Hereford Road. Can anything be done to discourage drivers from using these narrow lanes as a rat-run?
The issue of fly-tipping on Deri Road was also raised.

Turning right from Park Street onto Pen-y-Pound, by Tesco, can be awkward, as eastbound cars often come around the bend from Frogmore street very quickly. How can this be solved?

We have of course been campaigning for a cycle and pedestrian connection enabling more direct movement between Kentish Town Road and Grafton Road for years. At one time a semi-official route via Arctic Street was actually established, but the landowner eventually vetoed it for various reasons.
How can we revive the campaign for this?

The Draft Cambridgeshire Long Term Transport Strategy and Local Transport Plan Refresh has, as a City Deal item, a £43million project to create "Comprehensive segregated bus priority / Busway on Newmarket Road into Cambridge between Airport Way and Elizabeth Way / East Road."
This is quite clearly an opportunity to get far better cycle provision on this corridor.

For a change, I tried following the route signs for the station today. As well as a mystery tour near the Grafton centre where the signs simply stop, my route was blocked at Gresham Road by "WET TAR" and a sign proclaiming it. No diversion was signed and there were no advance warning signs that would have let me pick a better route earlier. Plenty of people were riding along the footways - enough that it was too crowded for me to feel safe doing so. I performed a U-turn, waited a second time at the crossroad traffic lights and rode along the very busy Gonville Place and Hills Road instead.
I've tweeted at Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridge City Council in https://mobile.twitter.com/mjray/status/453926972843118593 because I don't think that is legal - a cycle route suddenly being blocked by wet tar does not comply with the code of practice on safety at streetworks, which is required by law. I'm disappointed to encounter this in Cambridge.

The DfT have contracted consultants to come up with a concept for a north south cycle route broadly following the alignment of the HS2 railway line, but linking up key points of interest and centres of population along the way. For the section from East Midlands Airport to the new station at Toton, a key issue is where the cycle route should cross the Trent. There is a compromise to be made between the shortest route from EMA-Toton and locating the bridge where it would serve the largest population. A more Eastern bridge would serve large population centres in Beeston & Clifton, whereas a more western bridge would be a more direct route. A possible compromise would be to locate the bridge near the existing rail bridges at Trent Junction near Trent Lock.

The National Speed Limit currently applies on this very narrow lane. There should surely be be a 20mph limit here? Pentre Road runs along the tops of a number of residential streets on the edge of Abergavenny. It is popular with cyclists and pedestrians. Much of the lane is extremely narrow, with some blind bends, and it is not possible to drive safely along here faster than 20mph.

We aren't aware of plans to replace this particular crossing with a bridge, but it does have the highest risk score of any crossing in the area, so will e on the Network Rail radar.

There has been a surge in use of the station during tram works. Some new users may continue using the station after completion. There is no car park so the village is full of cars. The cycle racks aren't heavily utilised, might be more cycle usage if secure cycle parking were provided.

A white dividing line was put down on University Boulevard in error by the tram contractor. It was not agreed by the City Council.
The white line will be removed. However the cycle path alongside University Boulevard is to be programmed for resurfacing - this will remove the white line and upgrade the surface. This work will be undertaken and paid for by the tram contractor as part of the works they are undertaking to upgrade cycle facilities along the new tram routes.

When I popped into the Cambridge Wine Merchants last night, there were signs on all the posts and sheffield stands saying "no cycle parking from 6am, 7th April". I assumed some royal visit. I asked the man in the shop if he thought people not being able to park would affect trade and he said he hoped not. However, by the post where I normally park there's a big "road closed" sign, 6am-6pm (I think).
He is under the impression that there is filming going on from 7am-10am. It is period filming in the 1950s therefore you can't have sheffield stands (probably not invented) or modern bikes.
My main question/gripe is, when I see a "road closed" sign, I assume I will be able to get through even if I need to dismount and wheel my cycle. Sometimes, if it's a long walk, it may be quicker to cycle via another route. From the nature of what I've been told is going on, it sounds to me as if actually the road will even be closed to pedestrians, well unless they're wearing authentic 1950s dress.
Does anyone know any more? Does anyone know anything about the legal status of forcing pedestrians to take a lengthy diversion from what is the public highway? There are various cyclescape threads which have mentioned that although cars only have a permissive right to use the road, pedestrians have some stronger right. Can they force pedestrians and dismounted cyclists to go another route, when it's not an issue of national security?

Has there been any improvement in the "new" NCN 11 route from Waterbeach to Lode since last summer? Last time I went that way I had to wheel the bike across fields and carry it over two or three stiles.

There are a lot of schools in our ward, and a lot of traffic. Children should be able to cycle to them safely without having to share space with high volume, fast traffic. Schools should all have 20mph zones, with car-free access around the school, and protected routes to arrive there.

This junction is a problem. It has four exits and no one indicates their intent. We got the billboards removed a couple of years ago, but there are still accidents here.
It's a 20mph zone and most drivers ignore it.
The Magdalene place junction needs to be blocked off.

The Maxwelltown Cycle Path runs along the back of the Cuckoobridge retail park, but there's no easy access from the path into it. At the moment cyclists and pedestrians have to come off the path, cross the Glasgow Road at the lights (which are very slow) and then go into the retail park via the exit from the KFC drive-thru window, which is potentially quite dangerous. It would be quicker and more convenient to have a path from the cyclepath into the car park directly. We note that the new Aldi seems to have a direct entrance being built, which we welcome

Large piece of concrete partially blocking access. If this was put here to stop motorbikes, then it is obviously ineffective due to eroded bank on right hand side.

The path between Grace Avenue and Mona Street (Part of NCR 6) has had a ramp added for much better cycle access on the Mona Street end and a useful mirror at the other end to be able to see round the corner to and from Grace Avenue. All very good until... this was followed by the fitting of Dismount signs.
Sustrans Rangers are aware of this.

The existing continuous route from Bristol's Cumberland Basin Swing Bridge along The Portway towards Sea Mills and Avonmouth runs under a footbridge beside the sea lock that provides a direct traffic-free link to quiet streets on the other side of a very busy road system. The footbridge is wide and occasionally used by cyclists who carry or bump their bikes up and then down a long series of steps on each side to get to Granby Hill and Cumberland Place. The advantage of using the bridge is that it avoids crossing or joining the multi-lane traffic of Hotwell Road and offers a quiet route to Clifton, and to Hotwells Primary School. It would be useful for cyclists travelling from the west or the east along the existing cycle route. A continuous channel in which to wheel a bicycle at one side of the steps would be helpful for some and make use of the bridge a more viable option than it is now.

The distance between the cycleway and Vincent Drive is a couple of metres. It is illegal for people to cycle this distance because the connection is via a zebra crossing. This is backed up with a CYCLISTS DISMOUNT sign. This is absurd and needs to be corrected.
There is also an obstructive pavement-mounted tree at this location. There is plenty of space for trees just a couple of metres to the right, so the tree should be removed and a new one planted in the grassy area.

Fitzroy Lane is a major walking route to the Grafton Centre, but bizarrely has no pavement.
One of the two parking queuing lanes should be removed, and pavements added on at least the east side of the street, if not both sides.

At certain high usage times for the games area, such as on a Sunday morning, despite there two large car parks adjacent to the High school and a very large amount of on-road parking, the cycle itself becomes a car park. Also cars park across the dropped kerbs and along side the path, meaning that access is almost impossible for bicycles, prams and motobility scooters to squeeze through. Parking on the cycle path also blocks the path for users and also damages the surface.
Also surrounding pavements are blocked making it very difficult for the local community to use them and this causes road safety issues.

Camden is consulting on: The direction of motor traffic flow i.e. – should it remain as it is now (eastbound between Gower Street and Judd Street and westbound between Gower Street and Tottenham Court Road) – or change to westbound through the entire stretch between Judd Street and Tottenham Court Road They also ask support for further improvements (including stepped tracks and widened footways) subject to funding being available.

The barrier in the photo blocks the route where NCN67 joins Storforth Road at the end of the Rother Washlands in Chesterfield.
Perhaps the council was trying to be safe here, but since it's not a well lit area, a cyclist travelling this way at night might well have a nasty accident flying over this barrier.

The traffic island on Maybury Road at the Maybury Junction is too small to accommodate cyclists (especially those pulling child trailers, etc) other than at it's extreme southern end. As this is a two stage crossing it can lead to either the need to cross when red or wait partly blocking the carriageway.
The light timings need changed to allow a full crossing at once or the island needs to be extended.

It's a route to school and a natural route for Gosforth residents to walk and cycle into the city centre. Yet it's incredibly over-run by inconsiderate drivers, speeding and blighted by pavement parking. It's 20mph but due to its rat-run nature feels like a motorway thorough-fare. There are blind spots at the metro bridge crossings either end which are dangerous to navigate too. Drivers turning into Ilford / Rectory are also cutting corner, so you'd find a situation of an oncoming cars in your traffic lane.
Newcastle City Council have said there's nothing they can do. I don't believe that to be true. I think they are putting drivers needs before the needs of people walking and cycling.

There's no clear desire line or route west of Linacre/Holymoorside to join up to Chatsworth/Baslow/Rowsley/Beeley. This is a clear link to join Chesterfield mainline rail station to the Peak District.
Campaign for a 300m section of the unguided busway between Milton Road and the pedestrian and cyclists access at the end of Nuffield Close to be built as a road, providing a more direct access for lorries and cars to the trading estate.
Nuffield Road’s residential section should then be cut-off for motorised through traffic just past Discovery Way, turning the first part of Nuffield Road into a residential close.
