  • East Dulwich parking zone and healthier streets

    Southwark Council is conducting a parking and healthier streets study in the East Dulwich area, shown in pink (on cyclescape pic).

    We have received many requests for permit parking from residents in East Dulwich since 2015 and we expect parking pressure to increase with the adjacent Dog Kennel Hill parking zone recently implemented and should the 'Peckham West' zone to the North be implemented (also in consultation). We are therefore carrying out a study on the potential introduction of a parking zone in East Dulwich, to improve parking for residents and support businesses while creating more healthy streets for people from all walks of life.

    We expect for the zone to result in freeing up roughly 40% of the kerbside space and are therefore proposing ‘healthy streets’ proposals to encourage walking and cycling for people from all walks of life: ‘parklets’ (planting and communal seating in the place of a parking space), seating along walking routes for places to stop and rest, and cycle parking with reserved spaces for cargo bikes and disability adapted cycles. The Southwark Spine cycle route soon to be implemented along Crystal Palace Road is expected to further encourage cycling in the area.

    To improve bus journey times we are proposing to amend the bus lane operation to include an afternoon/evening peak operating time in the existing bus lane north of Blackwater Road, and to remove parking at the junction with Ashbourne Grove which is a pinchpoint for buses.

    We aim to support the high street by encouraging walking and cycling: research has shown that improving the environment for walking and cycling has positive effects on the high street economy: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/economic-benefits-of-walking-and-cycling  with people walking, cycling and using public transport spending spending 40% more each month than car drivers . In addition, to enable more flexibility and higher turnover, we are proposing to extend the operating time of half hour bays so that after the initial free half hour visitors could extend their stay for a fee. Visitors will also be able to use shared used bays in surrounding side streets.

    Why We Are Consulting

    A parking and healthier streets study is an opportunity for the council to assess the parking issues in a certain area by asking the local residents and businesses how they view parking on their street and whether they would like a parking zone and street improvements to be introduced.

    The council will analyse all responses on a road by road basis and make a recommendation to the decision maker.

    Any parking controls or street improvements that we introduce will take into account the results of the consultation as well as existing highway safety issues in the proposed zone, feedback from emergency services, and our wider transport policies reflecting our responsibilities to air quality and active travel.

    We would like to hear your views on the proposals. Please read the background documents below and consider the proposed layout and preliminary healthy street imrpovements before completing the questionnaire online or by post via the freepost address, by 31 January 2019.

In addition, should the East Dulwich zone to the South be implemented (also in consultation) parking stress will increase further.

  • Uneven tarmac at bus stop

    2019/01/20 - This has been resurfaced and is all nice and flat now.

    Going east at this point there is a bus stop where buses stopping have caused the tarmac to ripple badly.  Could cause you a nasty surprise if you don't spot it.

  • Run of potholes

    2019/01/20 - Fixed and nicely flat now.

    Western direction, about parallel with the obelisk in Trent Park is a series of three deepish long potholes close to the gutter.  Be careful because if your tyre catches the edge of one of these, you'll be weaving around.  Best to avoid them and steer wide so you don't find yourself weaving as a car close passes.

  • Roadworks: Gloucester Gate

    From January through June 2019, Gloucester Gate will be closed to all traffic including cycles. It is possible to get through on the footway (by dismounting). We are trying to get a better solution in place but in the meantime the only other options are to use Albany Street and Chester Gate (southbound) or Prince Albert Road and Macclesfield Bridge (westbound).

  • Meymott St: continuing Quietway 7 Southwark/Lambeth border

    The proposals include:

    • Permitting cyclists to travel from Hatfields to Blackfriars Road along the whole of Meymott Street including the section east of Colombo Street.
    • Widening of footways, including the removal of three parking spaces, to create a better environment for pedestrians.
    • Introduction of raised features on Colombo Street and Hatfields to further slow vehicular traffic and improve pedestrian accessibility.
    • Removal of redundant street clutter such as bollards and non-essential signage and the introduction of additional cycle stands.
    • The removal of the island at the junction of Meymott Street and Hatfields allowing us to build out the footway.
    • Reduction in the number of residents’ bays from six to four and increase in the number of Pay by Phone bays from three to five.

    Claims to only require 9 cycle spaces under SCambs policy (probably correct). Transport Statement proposes 5 Sheffield stands. Site plan shows 4 Sheffield stands, positioned outside the red line. Application form claims only '5' cycle parking spaces to be provided.

    County Highways is objecting to danger on the public highway potentially caused by deliveries and customers stopping in the mandatory cycle lane, as well as the positioning of the Sheffield stands on what appears to be public highway land.

  • Proposed changes to the road layout on A21 Tweedy Road, Bromley North

    TfL are planning changes to the road layout on the A21 Tweedy Road at the junctions of Sherman Road, East Street and Mitchell Way in Bromley North, and are consulting.

    Their plans form part of the Mayor of London’s long-term vision to encourage more Londoners to walk and cycle by making London’s streets healthier, safer and more welcoming.

    By making these changes TfL aim to:

    • Create a safer and more pleasant environment for cyclists and pedestrians with new, direct crossings and new traffic signals for cyclists
    • Provide more space for buses leaving the bus stands at Bromley North so they can access bus stops more safely and easily, which would improve their reliability
    • Update the street environment with resurfacing, new signage and refreshed road markings, to complement the public realm style of Bromley North village

  • Trumpington / Chaucer Road Junction

    Proposed new signallng for Trumpington Road / Chaucer Road junction.

    Issues with this:

    1. There is no details as to whether there are toucan crossing signals for the shared use path across the Chaucer Road Arm.

    2. It does not improve safety for city-bound cyclists/pedestrians who still have to avoid vehicles turning left into Chaucer Road.

    2. There remains a major problem with the on road cycle lane on the outbound side where the rear ends of large vehicles, especially coaches and busses, enter into the cycle lane as the vehicles make the slight right turn after the existing island.

    Work is meant to be starting 14th January! Can I write a letter on behalf of the cycling campaign pointing out these issues?

  • Quietway 1 extension - Blackheath Common - Lewisham Consultation

    Overview

    The Mayor of London’s aim for 2041 is for 80% of all trips in London to be made on foot, by cycle or using public transport.

    LB Lewisham is working on initiatives to help reach this target by gearing towards a “Healthy Streets” approach as set out in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy (2017) which encourage people to use their car less. This will help reduce the amount of dirty air in London, encourage active travel and tackle congestion on our already clogged up roads.

    Mayor of London's Transport Strategy

    As part of the Healthy Streets approach the borough is working on building a comprehensive “Quietway Network” so residents can choose cycling  and walking as a convenient transport choice.

    This consultation is seeking comment on proposals to upgrade the existing cycle route that runs through Blackheath Common as part of the TfL funded Quietway programme to encourage more people to walk and cycle. The proposals include three new crossings over:

    • Prince Charles Road
    • Prince of Wales Road
    • South Row

    All feedback from the consultation will be used to inform the final proposals ahead of construction works in Spring 2019. These improvements will form part of an extension of Quietway Route 1 which currently connects Waterloo and Greenwich

  • S/4594/18/RM Busway link from Broadway into Cambourne

    Unsure why this is coming forward now but it appears they want to establish the Cambourne part of the busway that will run via Bourn Airfield site into Cambourne. There is a 4m 'footway' separated by a 0.5m buffer next to it. It's not labelled as such but this would probably be the 'strategic cycleway' link also via Bourn Airfield.

  • Stag Lane & Roe Green Local Safety Scheme

    "Over the last 3 years there have been 26 traffic accidents recorded in Stag Lane resulting in 31 casualties. These casualties included 10 vehicle passengers, 9 vehicle drivers, 6 motorcycle riders, 4 cyclists and 2 pedestrians. 

    A 20 mph speed limit on Stag Lane and Roe Green between Mollison Way and Kingsbury Road designed to be self-enforcing through the introduction of traffic calming measures

     Speed cushions on Stag Lane and Roe Green which are narrow enough to allow a wide wheel based vehicle such as fire engine or an ambulance to pass relatively unhindered. A smaller wheel base vehicle such as a car however would need to have at least one set of wheels on some part of the cushion. Speed cushions have proved very effective in helping to reduce vehicle speeds.

     New pedestrian refuge islands on Stag Lane, by Carlisle Road and Goldsmith Lane to provide additional safe crossing points for pedestrians.

     Footway widening (kerb build outs) at the junction of Carlisle Road and Tewkesbury Gardens to slow traffic and reduce crossing widths for pedestrians.

     2 variable message speed signs to advise drivers to slow their speed.

     The installation of short sections of double yellow line “At Any Time” waiting restrictions at the Harrod Court vehicle access to the clinic. "

  • Ealing Road Local Safety Scheme

    The council proposes the following:

     20mph Speed Limit– A new 20mph speed limit will be introduced on Ealing Road from Wembley High Road to Mount Pleasant. Eight electronic vehicle activated 20mph and speed indicator signs will be installed at regular intervals to advise drivers about the 20mph speed limit and their current speed;

     Traffic Calming Features – Six new raised speed tables will be provided to reduce vehicle speeds and improve crossing facilities for pedestrians;

     New Zebra Crossings – 2 new raised speed tables & zebra crossings and 1 raised existing zebra crossing will replace the existing traffic island and speed cushions. This will provide more opportunities for pedestrians to cross safely between the traffic flows.

  • Kensal Triangle Area Proposed 20mph zone

    Brent Council says: "Over the last 3 years (01/03/2015 and 28/02/2018) there have been 9 traffic accidents recorded involving 10 casualties in the mentioned area. One accident was fatal and a total of eight accidents were slight. The casualties involved were as follows; 1 vehicle driver, 1 passenger, 2 cyclists and 6 pedestrians. Speed surveys carried out last year also show that speeding occurs particularly in Wakeman Road and Rainham Road.

    Speaking to your local resident association and ward councillors, we understand that there is a great interest from local community in introducing 20mph speed limits in all the streets within the Kensal Triangle area shown in the plan at the back of the page. We have been told that local residents want their streets to be safer, discourage drivers using the area as a rat run, and make their roads accessible to cyclists and pedestrians.

    As a result of our discussions, we are therefore proposing to introduce a set of measures to encourage slower vehicle speeds and to reduce the number and severity of traffic accidents in the area."

  • Stow-cum-Quy no cycle path

    There is now a nice new fully separated cycle path from the north end of Stow-cum-Quy along Colders Lane and Quy Road, which provides easy access to Anglesey Abbey, Lode, and a useful connection between cycle routes 51 and 11, with onward access to Wicken Fen. This is really great. However, to get onto this path from cycle route 51, just after the Newmarket Road junction with the A14, requires cycling along half a mile of busy, narrow, 30 mph road with no cycleway, and traffic calming (islands) that encourages wreckless overtaking of bicycles. The only safe option is to cycle on a narrow footpath with no signage. 

    Could at least painted cycle lanes be added to the road here, and with a 20 mph speed limit to make the village nicer for cyclists, residents and pedestrians? This could also encourage many more visitors to Anglesey Abbey from Cambridge to go by bike, and to go more regularly, benefiting the National Trust.
