Motion for Camcycle AGM 2016: Street Cycle Parking

Providing secure places to park bicycles is a simple and effective way to encourage cycling by making people on bikes feel welcome. In some areas of Cambridge residents have got used to all the spare street space being allocated to the storage of motor vehicles and very little for bikes. The result has been badly parked bikes cluttering hallways, clinging to drainpipes and other street furniture. The experience on Thoday Street where some on-carriageway racks have been installed is a good example of how the problem can be addressed.

    Camcycle resolves to:
    1. Champion the replacement of on street car parking with cycle parking where it is clearly needed
    2. Identify streets where this should and can be achieved
    3. Work with local councillors to survey demand
    4. Where there is sufficient local support work with local councillors to prepare proposals for funding. For example, from the Local Highways Improvement fund.

This motion was passed by 46 to one.

  • Quietway 19 - Cambridge Circus

Created by Colin Wing // 4 threads

There has never been a satisfactory cycle route from Soho into Covent Garden. The right turn from Old Compton Street into Charing Cross Road is prohibited. Moor Street lands cyclists at an inconvenient part of the junction. Using Greek Street and Shaftesbury Avenue means a difficult right turn into Charing Cross Road.

In April 2015 Westminster's contractors are consulting the public about improvements to Cambridge Circus. The consultation period ends on 8th May 2015. Subject to approvals, it is planned to start the works on site in August 2015 and to be completed by February 2016.

The scheme takes into account the need for Quietway 19 to pass through the junction between Soho and Covent Garden.

  • Carton Vale proposed cycling and pedestrian improvements

Created by David Arditti // 1 thread

The consultation on this is now out: see http://brent-consult.objective.co.uk/portal/ens/carlton_vale_walking__cycling_improvements

This is a scheme for which Brent Cyclists has been campaigning for some years. See also here for campaign context
    http://www.brentcyclists.org.uk/content/campaign-success-brent-plans-its-first-road-segregated-cycle-route

While this scheme does not do all we would like here it is a major step forward for the borough, which has no effective cycle infrastructure to speak of and lags behind adjacent LAs in cycling. Hence we would like to see it go through.

  • Consultation on junction of Farringdon Street and West Smithfield / Snow Hill on

Created by Jean Dollimore // 1 thread

CS6 currently runs from Elephant and Castle to Stonecutter Street.

Early in 2016, TfL with Camden and Islington Councils consulted on their proposal to extend CS6 northwards to Kings Cross. Our discussion and response are here:
    http://www.cyclescape.org/issues/2045-north-south-cycle-superhighway-extension-to-kings-cross

One of our main concerns was about the non-signalised junction of Farringdon Street with Snow Hill/West Smithfield.

Therefore this proposal for a signal-controlled cycle crossing over Farringdon Street is welcome.

  • Chatsworth Road/Millfields Road/Powerscroft Road New Signalised Junction

    Natalie G // 1 thread

Part of the Quietway 2 scheme to facilitate crossing of Chatsworth Road.
Deadline is 25 November 2016 - so please let us have comments by 18 November 2016 at the latest.

    The proposals include:

1 Replacing the existing zebra crossing with traffic signals at the Chatsworth Road\ Millfields Road\ Powerscroft Road junction. This will be designed to make the junction easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists as there have been a total of seven accidents in recent years. Six of these involved cyclists. There will be a Green Man crossing on each approach to the junction and one that will replace the zebra crossing.

2 Introducing a raised table across the junction of Chatsworth Road and Millfields Road to reduce traffic speeds.

3 Creating a new link and crossing for cyclists between Powerscroft Road and Millfields Park. This will be a new shared space with the route for cyclists clearly marked for the benefit of all users. New cycle stands will also be installed.

4 Introducing new footway into the western arm of Millfields Road as part of the shared space. The existing barrier will be replaced with a lockable bollard and new trees.

5 Extending double yellow lines on the south side of Millfields Road, up to the junction with Sewdley Street to facilitate safe bus and traffic movement.

6 Removing two parking bays on Powerscroft Road at the junction with Chatsworth Road to improve cycle access and the bus alignment approaching the junction.

7 Relocating the Disabled bay outside No. 176 Chatsworth Road and removing one parking space to increase visibility at the new crossing point.

8 Extending the footway to reduce the pedestrian crossing distance and reduce traffic speed.

  • Stratford Town Centre

Created by Simon Munk // 1 thread

    Newham council say:

We are working with Transport for London to transform Stratford town centre. This will include introducing two-way traffic around the Stratford Centre, improving bus services, and providing better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Changes to the one-way traffic system will allow for a better flow of traffic and reduce accidents in the area. It will also create a safer and more attractive town centre for everyone to enjoy.
Our plans aim to encourage more people to visit the Broadway, High Street and Cultural Quarter and support our local businesses and cultural venues.

As part of the plans, we want to:
    - introduce a two-way traffic system and road calming measures to reduce speeds
    - create separate cycle tracks to encourage more people to cycle through Stratford
    - widen the pedestrian crossing at Meridian Square and move other crossings to locations where pedestrians prefer to cross
    - improve the appearance of streets by resurfacing pavements, removing old street furniture and introducing new landscaping
    - enhance the public area near Theatre Square and St John’s Church.

  • Consultation on Tavistock/Torrington Place Cycle Route

Created by John Chamberlain // 1 thread

For the last year Torrington Place and Tavistock Place have had segregated cycle tracks on both sides of the street. This consultation is about making the current trial arrangement permanent. The current lightly segregated tracks would mostly become stepped tracks and there would be other improvements to junctions as well as increased space for pedestrians. There is a lot of local support but also significant opposition, mostly from residents of Judd and other streets where motor traffic volumes have increased. We think this can be corrected by the (separate) proposed changes to Judd Street and at Brunswick Square.

It's important that all cyclists and others in favour respond using the website below. Otherwise we are in danger of losing this flagship facility. You don't have to live in Camden but you do need to provide an address and postcode.

  • East Acton to Kensington Quietway

Created by Simon Munk // 1 thread

    Hammersmith & Fulham say:

The first of our new quietway routes starts in the north of the borough at the boundary with Kensington and Chelsea in Mitre Way, it then enters the southern edge of Wormwood scrubs and heads towards East Acton tube station before finishing at the A40 westway cycle crossover. The full quietway route starts at St Mark's Road in Kensington and Chelsea and finishes at East Acton.
The quietway will run along the southern edge of Wormwood scrubs including a new shared access track into the scrubs which will improve the access into the scrubs and create a short link to the existing track alongside the athletics stadium, and to Hammersmith Hospital.

  • Consultation on St Mark’s Square Proposed Pedestrian and Cycling Improvements

Created by Jean Dollimore // 1 thread

This consultation offers very-long-campaigned for two-way cycling in St Marks Square to complete the 6-year old scheme in Princess Road.

Camden proposes to take out one of the three motor traffic lanes and replace it with a northbound contraflow cycle lane. The parking will be moved from the west side of the road and replaced as a floating parking bay outside the contraflow cycle lane – with a buffer to separate the cars from the cycle lane.

They also propose a right turn pocket on Prince Albert Road to facilitate right turns into the contraflow cycle lane.

For pedestrians, Camden proposes an extra green-man crossing so that there will be one on each of the three arms.

The proposals look good at first glance, but any detailed comments would be helpful.

Please respond by Friday 5th August so that Natalie and Harry can draft a response representing Hackney Cycling Campaign's position.
