  • Create Cycle Portals

    Public transport is limited as it does not give a door to door service making it impracticable for many people, and also it's slow on congested roads. Cycling does give that flexibility of allowing people to travel as and where they want quickly, however is no good for most people who need to travel more than 5 miles. Sitting in my car on the way to work, in a traffic jam, watching all the cranes and building work going on in Cambridge bringing more people into the area, I was wondering how to solve this conundrum.
    So I hit upon the idea of having Cycle Portals, or simply put combining public transport with cycles. For example by running a roll on roll off Bus between Is Ives and Cambridge, commuters could cycle the first part of their journey from home to the "Cycle Portal" and cycle onto a open plan bus ( i.e. a modified bendy bus with big doors and no seats ). The bus would wiz along the busway to the "Exit Portal" in Cambridge where they could disembark and continue their journeys to wherever.
    The more I think about it the more I think this has great potential at creating a real alternative to the car. With Cycle Portals to places like Addenbrookes, Sawston, new housing developments outside of Cambridge and so on cycling could provide a quick door to door transport solution. Your views?

  • Eastbound Flambards Way Cycle Path

    The High Street only permits cycling in one direction (westbound), and it appears unlikely we will get permission to cycle against the flow traffic down the High Street. Instead an eastbound only cycle path along Flambards Way would alleviate the need for a High Street contraflow. This could easily be achieved if all the brickwork down the side of Flambard Way was removed, and it wouldn't restrict the amount of space for cars.

    Removal of car parking is an easily achievable way of making cycling more pleasant (and safer) Both the removal/relocation of Pay and Display and restrictions to all day commuter car parking on residential roads that form part of 'quiet roads' for cycling should form part of this funding stream.

  • Secret consultation on closure of Elm Street

    I noticed a poster at the junction of Elm St and Clarendon St a few days ago. As I needed a rest this morning I stopped to read it. Apparently ONLY the residents of the Kite area (and not all of them according to the note pinned below the poster) are being consulted on the closure of Elm St, as far as I can tell, at the Elm Tree pub, to motor vehicles. Allegedly access by cyclists and pedestrians will be unaffected (although if it's some kind of rubbish narrow everyone having to give way to everyone else design, some regular users might wish to take issue with this, and suggest improvements to the design).

    There is no reference to this anywhere I can find online. If I wish to reply to this consultation (and as I'm not a resident, will my views be taken into account?), I will have to go back to the poster and copy down the email address on a bit of paper. Deadline is tomorrow.

    However, as a DAILY user of Clarendon St, I feel my democratic rights are being are being totally undermined. It may well be that a very large number of residents are against this proposal. Looking at it, it looks as if, for the vast number of cyclists who cycle along Clarendon St, it will probably improve safety as there may be fewer motor vehicles trying to use the Elm St crossroads which is probably the dodgiest bit of this route. Therefore regular users of Clarendon St may well wish to support this proposal.

    My question is: how can they have a consultation that's secret and only open to those who actually live in an area rather than all those actually affected? As far as I am concerned this is totally undemocratic to the extreme.

    If anyone is passing the area in the next couple of hours and has the technology to take a photo of the posters and start a thread on here regarding it and posting the posters so we can look at them at our leisure, it might be helpful for those of us who might like to drop a quick email in support of this plan.

  • Consultation on Proposed Pedestrian and Cycling Improvements at York Way / Goods Way junction

    The main improvement for cycling is the facilitation of an eastbound route between Goods Way and Wharfdale Road. Unfortunately, due to Wharfdale Road being one way, this route currently doesn't work westbound.

    Camden Council's proposals include the following:

    - Permit cyclists to turn right out of Goods Way into York Way

    - ASLs on all three arms of the junction

    - Northbound approach on York Way towards Goods Way reduced to single motor lane, making room for a cycle lane

    - Signalised green man crossings on all three arms of the junction (only one at present)

  • Cycle Path not safe design

    Where the cyclepath merges onto the road outside the Mercedes garage going to Huddersfield . The white lining disappears and the kerbs rises out of the ground causing a hazard.

    I recently came off at speed here causing injury and damage .

  • NCN 15 Trent Bridge to Clifton proposed

    Proposed route of NCN 15 from Trent bridge to Clifton, following the south bank of the river Trent. The idea under discussion is for the route to be temporarily signed by Sustrans volunteer rangers in the first instance. there are also plans to sign an NCN 15 to NCN6 link route via Wilford Toll, Birdcage walk, Lenton Lane, Abbey St. NCN15 from Clifton west can be signed once the A453 works are complete.

  • No easy access to Castle street from Taw Vale

    The most frustrating part of the journey is when I get to the square. To get to Castle Street you either have to cycle under the bridge. This underpass is far to narrow and has blind entry..It makes a heart racing cycle when someone comes in the opposite direction narrowly avoiding collision! The surface is also very slippery in the wet. The only way to avoid this is by continuing to the T junction at the square and turning left... Ooops No left turn!! Of course, even if you could there is no way to get to castle street without going over the bridge and doubling back! Any improvement here would make a huge difference!
