  • City Deal funding for restrictions to car parking

Created by Jim Chisholm // 1 thread

The Greater Cambridge City Deal has allocated £22 million over the next 5 years for:
"City Centre capacity improvements/cross-city cycle improvements"
    see:
    http://www.gccitydeal.co.uk/citydeal/info/2/transport/1/transport/2

Removal of car parking is an easily achievable way of making cycling more pleasant (and safer) Both the removal/relocation of Pay and Display and restrictions to all day commuter car parking on residential roads that form part of 'quiet roads' for cycling should form part of this funding stream.

  • Girton Interchange "Improvements"

Created by Jamie // 1 thread

At the moment it is possible to cycle from Cambridge Road, near Madingley, to Girton, on a bridleway that crosses over the A428 and then passes under the M11 at the Girton Interchange. You can then cross three roads (A1307) and reach a pavement on the North-East side of the Interchange. Using the pavement you can then reach Washpit Lane and cycle up towards Girton. (The pavement is marked as a shared-use route on the OSM Cycle map, although I am not sure that it really is.)

Apart from having to be careful when crossing the A1307 junction it is a rather pleasant route to ride.

The Girton Interchange is being "improved" to reduce the bottleneck for cars. Does anyone know what plans there are to ensure that the current route through remains open and whether there are plans to improve the bridleway route through? Or will this be another example of roads being developed to the detriment of footpaths/bridleways.

  • Zizzi Restaurant on Bene't St - website

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Sorry, being a bit tongue in cheek here, but this just made me cross. And no-one has to follow this issue if they don't want to!

    website here
    http://www.zizzi.co.uk/venue/index/cambridge-benet-street

I've been "in touch" and left these comments:

"Your Cambridge Bene't St restaurant is allegedly "inspired by the huge cycling community". Therefore how come, in the "get directions" bit of the page, the only transport options are "car", "walk" or "train"? I know how to get from my place of employment to Bene't St by bike and even that there's a large underground cycle park just around the corner but, frankly, this is poor, and your marketing people need a rocket.

I will be posting the url of the restaurant and these comments on Cyclescape to see what the rest of the huge cycling community think."

I'll see what reply I get from their "customer experience team" and post it here as a thread when I do hear back from them.

  • Orchard Park audit

Created by Klaas Brümann // 2 threads

Gallagher Estate, master planners of Orchard Park will soon hand over the highways for adoption by the County Council.

We won't be able to fix this car centric development, but within it there are many pavement cycleways, "cyclists dismount" signs, cul-de-sac signs and others which are wrong or don't apply. There are also issues with dropped kerbs etc.

I am looking for volunteers to audit Orchard Park, making a list of corrections we require before Gallaghers hands this project over.

  • Westbury Hill: Bristol. New Tesco's Express

Created by David Wilcox // 0 threads

The Foresters Arms in Westbury on Trym in Bristol is being converted to a Tesco Express.

The Council want to change the waiting restrictions by a whole one metre!

    http://www.bristol.gov.uk/page/transport-and-streets/traffic-regulation-orders-tros#jump-link-3

"It is proposed that the current prohibition of waiting at any time (indicated by double yellow lines) on the south west side of Westbury Hill, which currently terminates in line with the common boundary line of numbers 73 and 75 Westbury Hill, should be extended by one metre in a south easterly direction. Delivery vehicles are permitted to wait on yellow lines while goods are being loaded or unloaded and the proposal is intended to provide vehicles being used to make deliveries to the new supermarket with sufficient space to pull in close to the kerb, to minimise interference with the movement of other traffic."

Since this will have a minimal effect on the ease of delivery to the Tesco's - remember most Articulated Lorries are 13- 16 Metres in length
    http://www.intelligentanswers.co.uk/index.php?topic=2851.0
    Why bother changing anything?

Looking at the google street view pic attached, parking an Artic on this road will cause major disruption and be a safety issue for the pedestrian crossing on the mini roundabout.

I wonder what the cost of raising a TRO for one metre change in parking restrictions is?

  • Land Purchase – VOSA, Bristol Bath Railway Path

Created by David Wilcox // 0 threads

    Proposal
To investigate the purchase of land of the Car Park of the VOSA building adjacent to the Bristol Bath Railway Path (BBRP).

    Rationale
The BBRP is one of Britain’s busiest off-road pedestrian and cycle paths with over 5000 people using it daily. The path narrows at its approach (inbound) to the Lawrence Hill underpass, resulting in an uncomfortable experience for path users. Purchase of the VOSA car park would allow the path to be widened through this section.

  • Hassell Drive Open Space Formalised Path

Created by David Wilcox // 0 threads

    Proposal
To widen the path that links Trinity Street/West Street with the Bristol Bath Railway Path.

    Rationale
The Railway Path is one of the City's busiest parks, with an estimated 5,000 sustainable transport journeys made along the St. Philips end of the path each day either by foot or by bike. Many of these journeys access the railway path via a narrow path from Trinity street. The path is 1m wide, which is unsuitable for the volume of cyclists and pedestrians that use it.
