    The A111 Chase Side is a useful and direct commuting and leisure route for cyclists, linking Southgate and Cockfosters. Safety improvements are needed for cyclists using the road, particularly at central refuges forming pinch points where close passes are a frequent risk. More extensive infrastructure, utilising wide verges, service roads and semi-segrated lanes, could provide a safe route to increase levels of cycling to local schools, shops and sports facilities.

  • A111 Cockfosters to Hadley Wood

    Convert the footway along the A111 Cockfosters Road to shared use between the entrance to Trent Park and Waggon Road. This would link with the existing segregated cycle track from Cockfosters tube station to Trent Park and to Sustrans Route NCN 12 and Hadley Wood train station. It would allow residents in new developments along Cockfosters Road and the large planned development within Trent Park to cycle to both stations and beyond. The A111 is narrow and busy, with insufficient room to overtake a cyclist safely if there is oncoming traffic. Motorists can be aggressive and pass cyclists very closely, so only the bravest cyclists use this road. During morning and evening commutes there are long queues of traffic, making it difficult and unpleasant to use the road on a bicycle. The footway on the west side of the road has very few pedestrians and is wide enough to allow dual use or be upgraded to segregated use. It also has dropped kerbs to allow cyclists to cross side roads.

  • Chalk Lane Cockfosters - cyclist contraflow needed

    An 80 metre length of Chalk Lane is one-way northbound, preventing use by southbound cyclists wanting to avoid the busy A111 between Hadley Woods bridleway and Cockfosters Station, where there is a safe Pelican crossing onto the cycle track linking to Oakwood and beyond. An 80 metre long contraflow for cyclists would fix the missing link and provide a safe and mostly off road cycle route all the way from Enfield to High Barnet. London Cycle Design Standards state: "Unless there are over-riding reasons not to, there should be a presumption that contraflow cycling should be provided for in any one-way street." (4.3.9 Two-way cycling in one-way streets). Chalk Lane used to be two-way until a new housing estate was built in Verwood Drive, when it was made one-way to stop too many cars emerging onto the A111 next to the tube and bus station. However, there is no reason to stop cyclists.

    Firs Farm park has undergone a transformation with the wetlands project and more exciting facilities are planned. This proposed Quietway cycle route will make it easier and safer for Enfield residents to get there by bike or by foot.

  • ECC - 9 Contraflow signs needed on Devonshire Rd N13

    There are no contraflow signs when entering Devonshire Rd from Adermans Hill. Cyclists have reported hostility towards them as they ride "against the flow". The markings are correct as the cyclist enters Devonshire Rd from A105 but of course the drivers do not see that.

    A105 Junction Green Dragon lane Serious safety issue due to low visability of cycle lane and wide sweeping junction allowing drivers to turn at speed. The danger areas are one of the two lanes of traffic exiting GDL not giving way to bikes, or a left hook by drivers turning into GDL (cyclists will not have seen driver signaling from behind). This junction should always have been either a) signalised or b) low-traffic neighbourhood treatment given to Green Dragon Lane and area to reduce traffic volume on GDL. We suggest: 1) reducing GDL to two lanes only; 2) removing ped island; 3) adding reclaimed space to footway to make carriageway narrower to cross; 4) set back cycle lane one car's length before the junction, as for eg Park Ave treatment.

    Short, delayed green signal for cyclists NB with push button at junction A105 / Station Road. Most cyclists stay in the carriageway We suggest removing push button and a green cycle phase northbound moving with the traffic on Green Lanes. Drivers turning into Station Road will have to give way to bikes going ahead, with the same rules applying as for cars turning into any side road. This is easy and should be a quick fix!

    At A105 junction Fox Lane, north-bound cycle lane crosses a very wide junction - difficult to cross Fox Ln on foot, flared turning allows vehicles to turn at speed 1) Filtered permeability in Fox Lane neighbourhood would reduce traffic volume and the dangers at this junction; 2) failing that, perhaps a narrow entrance to Fox Lane with a planter in the carriageway or 3) a parallel zebra crossing over the mouth of the junction

  • ECC 8 - Long delay at A10 toucan crossing Salmons Brook

    There is a 40-second or more delay after pushing the button before the ped/cycle phase (on the west side of the crossing) at the A10 toucan crossing Salmons Brook. This delay leads to some people risking crossing outside of the green phase on a 40mph road where speeding is rife. 20 seconds would be more acceptable, as for the east side of the crossing.

    Parking patterns in the Bowes area have changed. Enfield Council has, in recent years, received numerous enquiries from residents of the area, and petitions covering four different streets that indicate community support for permit parking controls. Enfield Council is now seeking views on its proposals for a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ.) Why We Are Consulting Enfield Council is confident that zonal parking controls will prove popular with residents and offer them greatly improved parking opportunities. Area wide zonal controls can also reduce local congestion and prompt better travel habits amongst those heading to or through the area on their daily commute. The Council is consulting to make residents aware of its propsals and to seek their comments before plans are finalised or taken forward.

  • Quieter Neighbourhoods Consultation - Fox Lane Area

    Enfield Council are consulting on these Quieter Neighbourhood treatments for the Fox Lane area. (which includes the Lakes Estate). They include "encouragement" of a 20mph zone supported by enhanced signage using large planter boxes, road narrowing, continuous footways, road humps, "fake road humps" (!), and points no entry. Plus a school street. This proposal is interesting in that the location of the (many) planter boxes remains flexible and is an opportunity for a trial to see what works, or use additional boxes.

The main feature is an improved junction at Bury Street West and Church Street, with a 2.5m wide two-way cycle track to take cyclists from that junction to Blakesware Gardens (and onto the Salmons Brook cycle route).     Enfield Council are consulting on these Quieter Neighbourhood treatments for the Fernleigh Road area. They include a 20mph zone supported by road narrowing and road humps, together with other measures to discourage rat-runs: no-left-turns, one way streets and point no entry. This residential area is currently affected by through-traffic seeking to avoid sets of traffic lights at Green Lanes/Bourne Hill and Green Lanes/Station Road.

  • Consultation on Quieter Neighbourhood for Connaught Gdns N13

    Enfield Council are consulting on these Quieter Neighbourhood treatments for the Connaught Gardens residential area. They include one-way streets with contraflow for bikes, 'point no-entries', sinusoidal speed humps and width restrictions to filter out HGVs. The measures are based on residents' workshops which took place in 2013/14, a more recent perception survey and traffic surveys. Hazelwood Lane, Connaught Gardens and Callard Ave form the main rat run through the area between the A105, Hedge Lane and the A406. No measures are being proposed for these streets. Hazelwood School is on Hazelwood Lane and residents report chaos at school run times, with conflict between parents trying to drive past each other on this narrow road, and sometimes mounting the pavement. The school operates a 'drop, wave and go' policy - children are dropped from the car and the parent drives off without parking, while teachers escort the children into the school.

  • TfL consultation: A406 crossing at Palmerston Road N13

    The proposed changes by TfL are on their website here: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/bowes-road-palmerston-road/ Some initial thoughts are: 1) The staggered crossing already makes crossing by bike or on foot slow and unpleasant, with a long wait on the island where air quality is bad. A one-stage crossing would be far preferable. This is a route used by families on their way to school. On this point, I've noticed that when there is a green light to cross the A406 eastbound, westbound traffic seems to be held at the A105 lights - so it is sometimes possible to cross the whole road if you ignore the red signal on the westbound side. Surely therefore this could be converted to a green signal all the way across without delaying traffic? 2) A modal filter where Palmerston Road meets the A406 would make that section of the route much safer and more attractive for walking and cycling. 3) A wider point worth making: If Palmerston Road is part of Quietway 10, then surely more than one filter is necessary along its length to make it low-traffic and low-speed. Currently cycling on it is stressful, as a narrow road where drivers may be impatient at being behind a bike. Filtering would improve it both as a cycling route and for residents. This is especially important given that there are no plans to provide safe space for cycling on Green Lanes south of Palmerston Crescent, so filtering Palmerston Road could create a safe route for commuter cycling which currently doesn't exist.

    Enfield council says: "Worcester's Primary School has recently completed building works so that it can accommodate 630 pupils, plus 30 nursery places and the continued use of the Children Centre. The volume of pedestrian and vehicle traffic has increased as a result of this expansion and recent surveys highlight the risk of conflicts at the junction of Goat Lane and Garnault Road. Based on our observations and as part of the Council's policy on promoting sustainable travel, the Council proposes a number of measures."
