  • Route via playing field and Aldermanhill Rd

Created by Rhian // 1 thread

Signpost a route as shown from Calside to Brooms Road. This is the quietest and least hilly route and coupled with the other suggestions would make a more pleasant route into town by bike.

Remove the chicanes along the playing fields at the points shown so people using bikes, wheelchairs and pushchairs can use this path.

  • Moreland Street traffic calming

    Created by k9 // 1 thread

Islington is proposing a small chicane and the removal of some parking in front of the Moreland Street Primary School. We were informed that they were looking at changes to this street in 2017, but they have asked us for a response to plans in 24 hours.

  • Threat of barrier on existing Highworth Ave cycle route

Created by Matthew // 1 thread

I've gotten wind that some residents are pushing for an exclusionary barrier of some kind to block the existing filter at Highworth Ave / Leys Road. Right now it's a couple of nice planters with a reasonably-sized gap that any kind of cycle can ride through. I don't know exactly what they're planning but they want to stop motorbikes, which can only mean something really obnoxious for everyone else.

While I sympathise about the motorbike problem (I see them too, being a nearby resident and frequent user of this cut-through), I am very worried about this kneejerk reaction that will harm legitimate users of the filter. A form of collective punishment for the actions of a few, basically.

I would like to alert people who may be worried about yet-another obstacle on a cycle route, or even possibly losing a nice quiet cycle route that lets us avoid nasty parts of Arbury and Milton Roads.

  • Chicane, dropped kerbs and toucan crossing

Created by FrenchyF // 0 threads

There is a really nasty chicane in the middle of this path; it should be removed.

Dropped kerbs should also be added at the ends of the path, where it meets Lasswade Road (east) and the Burdiehouse Burn Valley Park path network (west).

The pedestrian crossing at Lasswade Road should be made into a toucan crossing.

  • Chicane too tight

Created by FrenchyF // 0 threads

The chicane at the Greendykes Road end of this cycle path is far too tight. It is impossible to cycle through without dismounting.

  • Narrow chicanes need removal

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 1 thread

The path between Hyvot Loan and Guardwell Glen has two narrow chicanes at both ends, which are quite overgrown too.

This path is important as it allows people to leave the quiet route northwards towards Ellens Glen, so you can avoid parts of the busy Gilmerton Rd.

I contacted the Active Travel team about it and they are going to look at it. There is some uncertainty if this is owned by the Morrison supermarket or the council. The chicanes were put in after local complaints about motorbike, so the Active Travel team has to investigate if this is still a concern.

  • Chicane on slope, creates unnecessary conflict

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 1 thread

The chicane at the west end of the Magdalene Glen path interrupts the flow when going uphills, particularly unpleasant for people with weak knees. It also forces cyclists uphills often to stop and start when there are other people going through, as it's not wide enough to pass.

It doesn't serve any useful purpose at it is on the top of the slope where cyclists are very slow anyway. As it's uphills, there is little danger that e.g. kids run out onto the wide pavement of Duddingston Pk South. Cyclists from the West are slow at this point anyway as they turn into the path.

  • Remove chicanes

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 0 threads

Chicanes too narrow for trailers. Also they are at the bottom of a slope, so when you turn into the path you can't use any momentum to get uphills.

They are at the end of the tarmac path through Craigmillar Park, an essential route connecting Inch and Craigmillar and the only way to avoid either the Cameron Toll mess or the Craigmillar Castle Road ratrun.

  • Remove chicanes

Two sets of chicanes that are unnecessary and difficult to get through.

This is an important bike/pedestrian connection to avoid busy Niddrie Mains Rd.

  • Dangerous corner for cycling at Storey's Way

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Bikes leaving the cul-de-sac, heading East, have to cross traffic twice. There is poor visibility and vehicles rat-run through the area.

With the North West Cambridge development coming forward, this problem will get worse in time.

  • No cycle bypass on The Hollow upper pinch point

    Created by t1mmyb // 0 threads

There is a pair of traffic-calming chicanes/pinch points on The Hollow. The one lower down the hill (where drivers must give way to downhill traffic) has a cycle bypass; the one further up the hill (where ascending traffic has priority) does not.

When I cycle up The Hollow I am probably managing about 5mph; this pinch point brings me into conflict with much faster motorised traffic going up the hill, to the extent that I usually avoid the road completely and take a different route (Southdown Road) that has no traffic islands/pinchpoints.
