  • Cut Bridge, West Lynn. No safe cycling facility

Created by Rob Archer // 1 thread

The Cut Bridge linking King's Lynn with West Lynn has no safe cycle facility, despite linking two sections of reasonably good quality cycleway. There is a narrow (1.2m) footway which cyclists often (illegally) use but it is too narrow to pass a pedestrian or another cyclist. There is also a low parapet with a risk of a cyclist being knocked over into the river in the event of a collision. This would almost certainly be fatal.

The 'correct' way to cross the bridge is to rejoin the carriageway, which involves (westbound) crossing on a fast, blind bend then back again after the bridge.

    Possible Solutions:

    1) 20mph limit extended over the bridge - preferably accompanied by average-speed cameras.

    2) Narrow the road and install a wider (Min 3+1 m) shared-use path.

    3) Reduce the road to a single, bi-directional lane with a full-width (2m) cycle lane either side.

  • Awkward Junction For Cyclists in 20 mph Zone

Created by Sam Saunders // 1 thread

Busy Ashton Road (a 20 mph road from the A3029) bends eastward into the commercial area of North Street, close to a well-used park. On the bend, immediately adjacent to a park entrance, Frayne Street brings one-way traffic from the north west, and allows cycles to travel in the opposite direction towards Cumberland Basin. Coronation Road has two way traffic on the north east side.

A recently installed calming measure has narrowed the road on the bend, as shown in the picture. The irregular shape of the road that results has made the turn into Coronation Road awkward for cyclists and, as can be seen from the lower half of the picture, some cyclists take ad hoc routes to avoid the complication. Buses and large lorries also use the route into North Street and most vehicles take the bend at about 30 mph, despite the speed restriction.

As a route for cyclists, there could be a continuous segregated lane alongside the park (perhaps shaving a metre from the park itself, crossing Frayne Road with priority and following Coronation Road eastbound. A large number of school children use the route along the park every day but only a very few use a bicycle.

  • Sharp, uneven bend at bottom of Madley Brook cycle path

    Created by jp.stacey // 1 thread

At the lower end of the cycle path that runs from Church Lane, up Madley Brook to Madley Park, is a bridge set at a weirdly sharp angle to everything else.

Coming from Church Lane, it is immediately after a blind corner, requiring a sharp right turn; then the bridge requires a sharp left turn. At this very point, before the wood of the bridge, the road surface is uneven and has collapsed.

While the cycle path apparently has to briefly join the footpath - no permission given for a way through on the south side of Madley Brook? - it does so in a very dangerous way, which is difficult even for experienced cyclists to negotiate, and provides no visibility of other route users including pedestrians.

  • Skippett lane full of road rubble

    Created by jp.stacey // 0 threads

When it rains, Skippet Lane between Ramsden and Finstock fills with gravel, soil and other associated rubble. It has collected at the bottom of the hill, and is particularly hazardous on the left-hand bend there.

This road - a useful route for cyclists wanting to avoid the main Witney-Charlbury B road - needs regular checking and clearing of detritus, as it has been like this now for at least a year.
