Sustrans invites comments by 30 June on its draft chapters of a "Cycle-friendly Design Manual".
This document, once published, could influence local authorities to provide better, safer cycle routes, and so persuade people who are not yet cycling their every day journeys to do so.
Your comments please to designandconstruction@sustrans.org.uk by 30 June.

Sustrans' "Handbook for cycle-friendly design", intended as a non-aligned expression of standards and processes for cycling provision, for public and specialist guidance, was published at the same time as the Campaign's "Making Space for Cycling". It received some criticism from members of CCyC.
Sixteen draft new chapters are at
http://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-services/what-we-do/route-design-and-construction and comments invited.
Subjects include: new developments; parking; design concepts; network planning; community involvement; signing; cycle-rail integration; and more...
Deadline for comments: 30 June

What do you think of Street Pod cycle parking, as user or local authority installer?
Street Pods enable you to secure front and back of standard-size cycle with only one lock.
Is there an issue of keeping them clean and of the ease of getting bikes into position adjacent to others... They may be more obvious from a distance than hoops, but how do they look in a community streetscape?
Photo shows pods north end of Peterborough bus station, installed abt 5 years ago.
Comments, for or against Street Pods?

Noticed recently there are a good number (>15) of bikes that look abandoned - rusty & flat perished tyres, at Trumpington P&R
I've not seen any notes about any clear outs for years

Need considerably more bicycle parking at the shopping centre. The few racks here are often overfull.

Need proper bike parking in front of Summerhall. Bikes chained to the guardrails are a hazard for pedestrians.
Some should be right at the entrance, some more could be at the front of Summerhall Square (please not tugged away somewhere at the back of Summerhall Square where it would be perfect for thieves).

These racks are too close to the wall so you can't actually lean a bicycle against them in a stable way.
Also why only so few in such a central and busy location?

Need much more bicycle parking here, also to access Nicolson Street.

Need proper bicycle racks in front of Margiotta (there are a few wheelbenders in a corner)

The Range supermarket has no cycle parking at all, and no railings or other things to lock a bike to. I usually lock it to a couple of shopping trolleys, but I'm sure that's not what the shop prefers.

The area on the south side of the junction of Elm Street and Museum Street currently houses two decrepit benches, but could more usefully be utilised for cycle parking.
There are a number of businesses clustered around this area (including the large new "MyGo" youth employment centre) which could benefit from customers having access to cycle parking rather than having to go up to Queens Street.

Cycle parking (ideally on-carriageway replacing an existing car parking space) should be provided on Cobbold Street to facilitate parents transporting children to St Margarets CEVAP school by bike. Existing cycle parking within the school grounds does not really make sense for this purpose as it requires cycles to be wheeled in and out of the site which is impracticable and could give rise to health and safety issues.

A planning application (14/1818/FUL) proposes to replace the road blockers with gates. The design has such a large gate it has to open to the left of the opening as seen from Manor St (see http://goo.gl/maps/j7Lfm), requiring 3 of the 5 cycle parking hoops (obscured by the trees and not in use in the photo) to be moved to the right of the entrance. They serve shops on King St and visitors to the Malcolm Place flats so moving them would take them significantly further from the needs they serve.
I am drafting an email to the planning department to include criticism of the gate design from my point of view as a local resident. I am also soliciting Campaign support on the cycle parking issue. I'll post a draft shortly.

Cycle parking as recently been installed on the pavement at one spot on Mill Road.
While new cycle parking is much-needed in this area, personally I feel this specific spot is unduly obstructive to pedestrians and the disabled.

Cycle stands are needed on the north-west side of North Lane, a street with a number of independent shops and a relatively high flow of cyclists.
Well-used cycle parking does exist on the other side of North Lane, but parked cars and traffic make the street difficult to cross.
A bank of stands could either be sited on the walkway (with consideration given to the width of the pavement) or occupy one parking space.

I've had a wander around the Addenbrooke's campus again this lunchtime, counting bikes that were not in what I would call bike spaces.
ie not in a proper bike space, attached to a proper bike support.
so, all the ones attached to railings, trees, bike shed legs etc.
I've added the numbers to the last few times I've done this, back in 2011 & 2007
July 2014 Total bikes not in racks = 530
Oct 2011 Total was 526
Jun 2007 Total was 399
Mar 2007 Total was 289
I'll see if I can attach my map & numbers to this thread

The existing cycle parking outside Haymarket station has nowhere near enough capacity, and more spaces should be provided.

Some of (the last of?) the s106 money from two out-of-town big box supermarkets is being used to remodel the connections between the bus and rail stations. National Route 1 runs through this area and the bus station may also be Lynn's biggest cycle park, so there's quite a lot of potential for this to do good - or to do harm.

There is currently no secure locks provided at Port Rodie bus stop, the main departure stop for buses eastwards towards Dumfries and Carlisle.

As part of the station redevelopments, the existing cycleparking is being replaced through June-August 2014 with two-tier stacks 'with the same capacity as the current arrangements'
