  • Blockage of cycle lane by street light replacement

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Yet again, Balfour Beatty are doing an utterly shocking job on the street light replacements. I thought there was a thread about this somewhere but I can't find it thus can't find if we've got any contacts to directly complain to.

Basically, there's a large hole in the pavement around where I've put the pointer - not sure that's 100% accurate since I was occupied with other things. So the cycle lane is closed to allow pedestrians somewhere to walk.

That has been fine this week as it's the school holidays and there is virtually no traffic to speak of. Come Monday, when Hills Road is nose-to-tail gridlock, cyclists will be double and pedestrians probably doubled, it's going to be dangerous chaos. The pedestrian route will not actually be wide enough for all the pedestrians that walk along there on a school day - they will be queuing to get through, let alone the effect of all the 'stuck' cyclists who can't get into the car lane as that's queuing all the way to Cherry Hinton Road.

What is particularly annoying is that this hole has been there all week with no change.

Basically yet again, they've just dug holes, stuck up obstructions and gone off leaving them. How about digging the hole, doing the work, and filling in the hole in a timely manner. This whole now four-year operation has been a shambles from beginning to end.

Does anyone have any suggestions for direct phone numbers or email addresses so I can complain?

  • Cycle Superhighway Section G

Created by Charlie Lima // 1 thread

The City Connect website shows that this section is a type 1 cycle track, from start at Burmantoffs Street, up the hill and over the flyover to the junction with Torre Road. It appears that they have built this part as a shared access path for pedestrians and cyclists instead. At the top, the cycle track veers off the A64, down the slip road towards a couple of roundabouts outside the Benfield Ford garage, before re-joining the A64. No doubt this will include some Toucan crossings, designed to slow cyclists and discourage those of us that already us the cycle/bus lane (as it is) to commute, from using the "Superhighway" at all.

  • North West Cambridge Building Works

    Created by Rachel_O // 1 thread

Ongoing work on the development of the North West Cambridge site results in cycle paths being blocked at random intervals, and inappropriate pedestrian-oriented alternative provision makes the situation more, not less, dangerous for cyclists, forcing us into a narrow roadway with fast-moving traffic. With the increase in heavy traffic, road surface is also deteriorating rapidly - increasing numbers of large potholes, which can easily lead to pinch flats and other mechanical failures on dangerous, narrow sections where lack of cycle path of pedestrian walkway means here is no escape route.

  • University Arms hotel reconstruction

Created by Richard Jennings // 2 threads

There are a variety of issues with construction lorries in this busy location, closure of the footway outside the hotel, narrowing of the route from Regents Street to Parker's Piece and traffic signal changes. The construction is expected to take two years.

  • Milton road underpass closure

Created by Cllr Ian Manning // 1 thread

Separate thread about this to separate from the main rail station thread..

The pedestrian/cycle underpass on Milton Road will be closed from August - December (currently) to facilitate rebuilding it for the busway extenstion.

Road works will be in place during this time.

  • Gresham Road Resurfacing - No Diversion

Created by MJR // 0 threads

For a change, I tried following the route signs for the station today. As well as a mystery tour near the Grafton centre where the signs simply stop, my route was blocked at Gresham Road by "WET TAR" and a sign proclaiming it. No diversion was signed and there were no advance warning signs that would have let me pick a better route earlier. Plenty of people were riding along the footways - enough that it was too crowded for me to feel safe doing so. I performed a U-turn, waited a second time at the crossroad traffic lights and rode along the very busy Gonville Place and Hills Road instead.

I've tweeted at Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridge City Council in https://mobile.twitter.com/mjray/status/453926972843118593 because I don't think that is legal - a cycle route suddenly being blocked by wet tar does not comply with the code of practice on safety at streetworks, which is required by law. I'm disappointed to encounter this in Cambridge.

  • Jenning Road - Lemsford Road bridge link

    Created by Rona471 // 1 thread

The link is scheduled to be closed for water main installation for six weeks from 30 September.

Nearest alternative ways to cross the railway line are Sandpit Lane (busy road with splitter islands!) or bridge link to York Road (nice and quiet but steps to bridge)

  • ASLs at King William junction

    Created by mike1727 // 1 thread

The roadworks at the King William Junction seem to have been complete.
We should asses them and produce a report on what they are like to ride. It would be useful to produce an on bike video whowing what they look like from a cyclists' point of view in traffic, especially contrasting the Marshalswick lane experience with the Sadridge road experience.

There are ASLs on the Sandridge Road arms with feeder lanes but nothing on the Marshalswick Lane arms.

  • Roadworks and Signing- general

A citywide (and indeed beyond) problem is poor consideration given to the needs of cyclists and pedestrians during road works- eg "cylist dismount" sign use

  • Catholic Church junction surfacing

Created by Aidan Van de Weyer // 0 threads

The Hills Road / Regent Street axis of the Catholic Church junction was resurfaced overnight (28-29 August) as part of the junction upgrade.

Many of the damaged iron works (manhole covers, etc) have not been changed. Some are in a bad state and quite dangerous because they have worn smooth, sunk or tilted.

I have contacted the Traffic Signals team at CCC, as they seem to be responsible for the works, and they should be getting back to me.

If anyone else fancies having a go at finding out what is going on and whether anything can now be done, it would be very welcome.

  • Pembroke Street closed from 2 September 2013

Created by David Earl // 1 thread

According to the Cambridgeshire Road works register, Pembroke Street is going to be closed for a long period starting September 2 by the museum of Zoology. Not clear what, if any, the impact on cycles would be, but the hole will be a dramatic 10m deep, so the works will presumably be quite extensive. Also, Tennis Court Road closed for one day on August 9 to prepare.

  • Roadworks on the guided busway

Created by Clare Causier // 1 thread

This afternoon the guidedbusway was closed from Cambridge Regional College to Histon. There was a security guard in a car who provided information on the closure and diversion. However, there was no diversion signage for cyclists or pedestrians.

When I returned home I checked cambridgeshire roadworks for further information but drew a blank.

Is anyone aware if works on the busway is covered by any public notification system?

Saturday afternoon is not a bad time for maintenance, but I imagine commuters would appreciate notice of works which affect their journeys.

  • Cyclists Dismount (Golden Hind Post Office)

Created by Ian Jackson // 1 thread

There are "Cyclists dismount and use footway" signs at some roadworks on Kings Hedges Road SE-bound outside the Post Office near the Golden Hind.

I spoke to a worker who said the sign had been put in by their traffic management team, after getting permission from Cambridgeshire County Council.

I have phoned the County who say one of their traffic management people will phone me back.

I have also made this FOI request:

  • Incredibly bumpy surface on East Road

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Now that the East Road gas works have finished, the road has been patched up, but in a very bumpy way. Although the tarmac is smooth, it is not at the same height as the original road so riding along is continually bumpy.
