Told to use the road by PCSO
I was cycling along the two-way cycle path, segregated, next to the road on Donnington Bridge in Oxford, on my cargo bike, with the two kids in the front carrier.
This was Monday 27/01/20.
It was raining like mad, so it took me a moment to realise the cyclist coming the other way who was waving their finger at me and saying 'You should be on the road, sir' was a Police Community Support Officer.
It's confused and disturbed me - as I don't believe there is any access restriction to the two-way cycle path, my bike is no wider than any other dutch bike (it's no wider than its handlebars) and I certainly don't want to be forced onto a very nasty stretch of road on one of the key river crossings of Oxford with my baby and 4 year old on board.

Cambridge Community Speedwatch
The Speedwatch scheme allows the public to get actively involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their neighbourhood. It is used in areas where speeding has been identified as a priority at quarterly neighbourhood panel meetings. The scheme is run by the force alongside the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership. It is about educating motorists in the law in relation to speeding and monitoring any trends in speeding in neighbourhoods.
Volunteers are trained to use speed indicator devices which displays vehicle speed. The registered owner of any vehicle seen exceeding the speed limit is sent an advisory letter from their local neighbourhood policing team, explaining that speeding is unacceptable to the local community.

Police ignoring advanced stop lines
I have just watched a police car over-run the advanced stop lines twice on Gilbert road, once at the Carlton Way cross roads and then again at the Milton Road T-junction. Both times the police car was approaching an already red light, so they had ample time to stop before the line. The second time they filled at least half of the box. If the police in Cambridge can't be relied on to respect the advanced stop line, how can we expect the general public to do so? Does anyone have similar stories or any suggestions on what to do about it? I didn't get the number plate unfortunately, because I thought turning round and photographing a police car on my phone might be more trouble than it's worth!

Police refusing to take details of an accident over the phone
A colleague has just come off the phone to the police, after being knocked off his bike on Hills Road. The Police are refusing to log this incident despite him being minorly injured and his bike being expensively damaged unless he comes into the Police Station in person to report it (he was cycling down Hills Road, person pulled out of side road without looking, in daylight and good visibility). As he works and lives near Addenbrooke's, this will take a great deal of his time, especially as he now has no transport, and he's just going "I can't be faffed, I've got work to do". This will also lead to him having to pay for the repairs to his bike, as, without an incident number, he cannot make an insurance claim.
I note on our website the following advice: "If anyone is injured, the incident must be reported to the police. For minor injuries there may be little that they will do. However, they are obliged to record the incident so that it appears in statistics, and you will need an incident number from the police if any insurance claim is involved."
I cannot believe that in the 21st Century, when I think we've had the telephone for over a hundred years, that people are required to physically visit the police station (of which there are fewer and fewer, and in many towns, hidden out of sight - my parents' nearest police station is now about 20 miles from where they live, despite living in a town of about 20000 people) to get an incident number.
Is this true? If not, what can he/we do about the misinformation being peddled by the Police? If true, what can we do to drag our public servants (as a taxpayer, I help pay their wages, thus they are in effect my servants) into the 21st Century?

Assault of female cyclist, Cambridge Rd, Shelford
CN Letters 30 July 2012:
"If the Lady whose bottom was smacked by a passenger in a green Ford KA as she cycled along Cambridge Rd, Shelford, towards Trumpington at 11 am on July 25, would like to do anything about it, please get in touch with me via this newspaper. I was following and have the details of the car" (Name withheld in CN)CCC to local police
"CCC would like to encourage the local police force to get in touch with the informant and take the necessary steps. Such behaviour is degrading, it is extremely dangerous, potentially life threatening, and must not be allowed to become a local custom. We look forward to read in the newspaper that the necessary steps have been taken and that such behaviour will be punished, including revoking of driver's license."Suggestions?

Improving cyclists' compliance with the law in Cambridge
There are a range of issues regarding cyclists breaking the law in Cambridge. This issue is intended as a container for strategic discussion of how this can be resolved.
There are of course many problems with drivers breaking the law, and discussions need to be in that context also, but this is issue is primarily for addressing the cycling side.
