  • Pavement cycling stops just before cycle shop

    The legal pavement cycling is suddenly not allowed 3 car lengths before a cycle shop near this junction which has toucan crossings and cycle paths on all other sides of it. Why can't it be continued to the bike shop for a safe cycle route to/from the junction away from traffic?

  • Terrible surface condition on cycle path forming part of NCN 20

    The condition of the cyclepath is so bad that a road bike with narrow tyres cannot be comfortably or safely ridden along the cycle side of the segregared path. There are numerous potholes of more than 25mm depth and quite a bit of loose gravel besides a generally very rough surface. The surface is more pothole than surface in places! It is even bad for mountain bikes and especially bad for small wheeled bicycles such as folding bicycles. This is forcing cyclists to use the pedestrian side of the path, with the potential for safety issues and confrontation. Last seen mid July 2013.

  • Lack of safe room for cycles, terrible road surface

    While some painted "cycle lane" does exist northbound, there is woefully little provision for cyclists considering the huge number that use this section of road each day, a large number of whom are those who work at the General Hospital and other nearby health centres. Southbound cyclists have no real provision of space at all, save a graduated stopline, where cars turning right often try to pass right-turning cycles on the inside. Dale road itself is extremely narrow by winchester road, with almost no pavement space for pedestrians.
    Cyclists heading northbound on Winchester road must beat traffic off the line at Dale road to get to the painted centre of Winchester road. North of the traffic light at The Range, the cycle lane is almost non-existent, placing cyclists between 2 lanes of heavy traffic, and cyclists have to stop and wait in this dangerous area in order to turn right onto Wilton road. Furthermore, the road surface, especially at this part of Winchester road, is currently deplorable.

  • Dangerous cycle lanes in Ipswich Town Centre

    In Museum Street and Upper Brook Street/Northgate Street it is very dangerous to cycle. Both roads are very narrow, have lots of buses pass through and there are contraflow cycle paths. On those you are very close to the buses (both directions) even if you wait on the pavements to let them through because you are worried about accidents. Can cyclepaths go through Elm Street, Tower Street or Tower Rampart instead?

  • A316 Cycle Lane - Priority over side roads

    I have serious concerns about the safety of this portion of the bike path; arising from its recent re-design. Recently my 10 year old son was in a very close “near-miss” with a car turning off the A316 into Bicester Road; and I believe many more similar incidents are likely occurring. Eventually someone will be seriously hurt or killed on it.

    However, the improvement in the track leads cyclists to feel more confident in using it – giving a false sense of security.

    In particular:
    • The segregated track makes it particularly appealing for inexperienced and more vulnerable cyclists (such as kids).
    • This track design leads to an increase in the cyclists speed.
    • The smooth/quick nature of the track leads inexperienced cyclists to believe that THEY HAVE RIGHT OF WAY across side roads.
    • There are no markings on the roads to tell drivers coming in or out of side roads that cyclists could be on the track crossing their path.
    • There is a particular challenge for EASTBOUND cyclists.

    To avoid stopping at every side road, when on the track travelling Eastbound (as per red arrow on photo) approaching roads such as Bicester road, the cyclist has to simultaneously
    (a) check to their FRONT/LEFT side to see if a car is exiting the side road
    (b) check BEHIND them on their REAR/ RIGHT hand side to see if a car is about to swing off the A316 into the side road (usually at speed) - (as per orange arrow on photo).

    This is a hard combination to perform – looking 180 degrees opposite directions at the same time. If you are an inexperienced cyclist, on an apparently safe track, it is very likely that you will not realise you have to be this vigilant and not check adequately for cars.

    Hence, my boy rode across Bicester road from the east and was very nearly hit by a car turning off the A316.

    (Note that travelling from the west is somewhat easier as both the vehicles turning in from the A316 and those turning out from the side roads are in your front field of vision).

    My suggestions for improving this situation are:
    (1) Clearly mark the bike track across the side roads so cars are aware there are cyclists approaching from the side.
    (2) Ideally, give cyclists priority across the side roads; so making cars slow to a halt and making it more intuitive for cyclists.
    (3) To facilitate this, would require some stopping space for traffic coming on/off the A316 to after the bike track crossing

    At roads such as Bicester road the bike track could be curved to the south by about 2m before crossing the side road – this curve in the track would
    (a) naturally slow cyclists down as they approach the side road
    (b) would provide vehicles moving onto the A316 a decent gap so they can separate the concerns of first negotiating the bike track then focus on getting on the A316;
    (c) for vehicles coming off the A316 the additional space would give them space to stop and give way to cyclists.

  • Unmarked path to Richmond Park from Queen's Road

    There is a useful but unmarked path from Queen's Road to Richmond Park and through to Sheen. It is used by pedestrians and cyclists & I have never seen it on any map! From Lower Grove Road, it takes you to the park via Bog Gate, or Sheen via Sheen Common.

    If it were better marked on maps, better maintained & wider in places, it could form a useful section of Richmond's (paved, segregated, Dutch style?) cycling network.

  • Coronation Road Cycle Path

    Someone wrote and complained in The Pigeon magazine, saying "why do cyclists not use the cyclepath on Coronation road and hold up traffic?"

    Good question. Because some people don't know it's there and the road is a smoother surface.
    It needs clear delineation, a smooth surface, and if the railings aren't to be moved, large "SHARED SPACES" marked around the tree bottlenecks (chevrons on pavement) so people know what's what.

    You wouldn't really know to look at it, that it's a cyclepath, with loats of signs stickered over.

    Ideally the Railing will be moved back to make it wider and so the large trees aren't a problem, but if money's tight, smooth surface and clear markings on the floor will do.

  • Milton Road Housing Development in Back Gardens 12/1537/FUL

    A new development is proposed behind 231-247 Milton Road in Cambridge.

    The entrance driveway / road will need to cross the popular off-road cyclepath on Milton Road.

    The crossing needs to be designed to be cycle friendly; ie. level for cyclists, with good visibility for cars to be able to see cyclists on the path, and with cars required to give way for cyclists.

    There is a need to watch this development through the planning process.

    Alternatively an access to the development from Woodhead Drive might be the safer option.

    There appears to be potential for a cycle and pedestrian route through the site; but that is not currently planned for.

  • Westerleigh - Yate Spur Cycle Path - Westerleigh Road Crossing

    South Glos Council have published a consultation for extending the cyclepath from Emersons Green to Yate - the Yate Spur

    Funding has been secured through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund to deliver elements of the Yate Spur cycle path. When complete, the route will connect the Bristol to Bath Railway path with Yate.

    The proposed road crossing will provide an informal crossing facility at Westerleigh Road for cyclists, walkers and horse riders using the Yate Spur Cycle Path and Fishing Lakes Link.

  • No cycling signs on Great Oak Row cycle path

    Inconsistent and incorrect No Cycling signs exist at the Sheepfold Lane end of the Great Oak Row cycle / foot path. Cycling is permitted here, as can be seen from the cycle symbol on the ground. These signs should be replaced with shared-use cycle / foot path signs to avoid causing confusion.

  • Wadloes Road - Ditton Fields - Path Lighting

    The path between Wadloes Road and Ditton Fields is popular with pedestrians and cyclists.

    It is unlit though, and as it has buildings and high hedges on either side sofeels enclosed and it is much darker on the pathway than it is out in the open.

    Lighting on this pathway would I think make it feel safer, and I think would actually improve safety for example through helping cyclists spot pedestrians earlier.

  • Exeter to Crediton Cyclepath

    The primary route between Crediton and Exeter is the narrow and busy A377. It has been the site of at least one cycling fatality near Newton St Cyres.

    An alternative route is possible using the lanes north of the A377 through Sweetham. However this route is compromised at both ends - at Exeter in the Cowley Bridge area and in Crediton by the approach along the A3072.

    Development of a safe route is belived to be of high priority.

  • Cycle path needed to The Abbey School

    A cycle path is needed to serve The Abbey School in Faversham. The busy A2 at the front of the school currently provides a barrier to pupils and staff choosing to cycle to the school. A cycle path will reduce the number of pupils being dropped off at the school by car and the number of staff that drive in, thus reducing the burden on the highway network.
