It's a busy ped / cycle route to school and the city centre. Yet the (toucan) crossing prioritises motor traffic hurtling past at 40mph (speed limit). Drivers frequently ignore red lights. The alignment, crossing space and phasing could be much fairer to pedestrians and cyclists using this crossing.
Newcastle City Council said this crossing is looked at, but their wheels turn too slowly.

When busy, crossing this junction is hazardous when negotiating with northbound vehicles at speeds of up to 40mph.
No indication is provided to motorists that there will be conflict.
A speed table with dragons teeth markings needs to be installed.

I couldn’t tell from the Cyclescape map interface whether there is already a thread on the crossing at the northern junction to Sawston - but I see that it is now being rebuilt, and there seems to be a quite a sizeable central island. Did the inadequate plans get changed? (and why has there been no mention of this if so?)

A recent Bristol Cycling Campaign ride returned to Bristol from Nailsea using the Festival Way.
Daylight was fading & they were already using front & rear cycle lights (which would be "side on" to approaching traffic whilst crossing B3128).
The final North Somerset stretch after Long Ashton crosses the B3128 to use the off-road route past the Dovecote.
Concern was raised about the safety of this crossing to the central island due to:-
traffic approaching at speed on a bend - potentially endangering "Bristol bound" cyclists
Poor site line - "Bristol bound" cyclists view of approaching fast traffic is obstructed by both the bend & by vegetation
low cycle capacity at the central island (for a Festival Way route potentially with significant numbers "stranded" on the island or left waiting to cross to it compounding the dangers of poor sight line).
One of our concerned participating cyclists on that ride is the Chair of Bristol Civic Society.
This location was previously raised in my snagging email of 12 April 2013 14:11 headed "Re: 24 April Cycle Forum reminder and item for discussion"
.
" 1.1.2 NCN 33 crossing B3128
Vehicles approaching from the SE have a "cycle crossing" sign but will tree growth soon obstruct drivers vision when approaching?
Does the central island have enough capacity for peak numbers crossing?"

Network Rail planning application for replacement of level crossing with footbridge
A crossing of sorts has been made from Burtons Rd across the busy Uxbridge Road to access Longford Close from where a bridge across the Longford River provides access to Hampton (schools).
The tramline paving is in place to show shared use of the footway but no visual signing. (We have raised this with the council to no effect).

Safer crossings of Highfield Lane between the two parts of Highfield park
The lights seem to always wait until no traffic is coming on the road before changing in favour of cyclists/pedestrians using the cycle route (NCN 20) to cross the road.
The road is very busy and this equates to extended unecessary delays. What is the point in lights that hardly ever stop cars?
This, combined with the terrible surface of the path to the south, is discouraging cyclists from using the cycle route, pushing them onto the very busy road junctions to the east and west, which have little to no cycle provisions.
Another effect is encouraging people to take risks crossing before the ligths have changed, and leaving the lights to (eventually) change when no-one needs to cross any more.

Twice in recent days I have encountered ambiguity over right of way when cycling westward from the shared foot/cycle path on Clift House Road, across an entrance road and onto the new continuation path towards Ashton Avenue Bridge. Four lanes of merging traffic are travelling eastbound and occasionally one vehicle will turn off the main road into the access road. While I might assume that having started to cross this road I have right of way over a vehicle turning into it, the road markings and the sheer size of the junction make it unclear as to what ought to happen. It might be that the left turning traffic should have to negotiate a much more obvious turning, rather than the wide sweep that allows the turn to be made at full speed.

As freeholders of the site, Tesco have applied for planning permission for two new restaurants between the roundabout shown and the railway tracks / A444 (above the dual carriageway).
Two core issues:
1) This is an extremely dangerous, uncontrolled crossing - traffic leaves the A444 at 50mph, and is still 30 as it reaches the roundabout. As the map shows, there are Belisha crossings both north and south of this roundabout, so why not to the west, where traffic is still fast and undivided?
2) Cycle parking on the rest of the site is still grossly inadequate. 18 cycle parking spaces are proposed with the restaurant - the same number as the rest of the site combined - although these are actually all in one place at the south of the site.

The proposal to introduce a pedestrian crossing in the vicinity of Duchess Way is to provide a safer environment for pedestrians to gain access to local amenities and bus stop facilities. The Zebra crossing will also aid children who live in the Duchess Way area to walk to and from local schools.

South Glos Council have published a consultation for extending the cyclepath from Emersons Green to Yate - the Yate Spur
https://consultations.southglos.gov.uk/consult.ti/YateSpurWesterleighRd/consultationHome
Funding has been secured through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund to deliver elements of the Yate Spur cycle path. When complete, the route will connect the Bristol to Bath Railway path with Yate.
The proposed road crossing will provide an informal crossing facility at Westerleigh Road for cyclists, walkers and horse riders using the Yate Spur Cycle Path and Fishing Lakes Link.

This is a busy rat run and a bus route! As evidenced by the google street view, a pedestrian desire line runs through from Butterfield Road to Bishop Manor Road. The consultation is at: https://www.citizenspace.com/bristol/city-development/bishopthorpe
Pavement Parking is the issue here, blocking sight lines. The proposed road markings and build outs will help. If they are enforced.

Tighter corners to favour pedestrians and manage speed.
https://www.citizenspace.com/bristol/city-development/coronationroad/consult_view
Suggested points:
1. This is a 'gateway' to the 20mph area and the opportunity to mark this and make it work should not be missed. It's not enough to just narrow and reshape the carriageway. It should feel different.
2. Central islands and build-outs introduce pinch points that make cycling feel less safe. There should be a cycle lane through the pinch point in line with guidance.
http://www.cycling-embassy.org.uk/sites/cycling-embassy.org.uk/files/documents/cyclingengland/2011/01/a03_traffic_calming.pdf
3. A better option to emphasise pedestrian priority would be a zebra crossing

This is one of the most difficult and dangerous sections of the local cycle network. A point where cycle traffic to 2 local schools, a college and a local park all meet.
Fast heavy traffic
Very poor sight-lines
Cars parking over dropped kerbs
Any suggestions as to how it can be improved?
delays are too long crossing from the centre to college green. Too much priority given to motor traffic outbound vs heavy two way cycle and predestrain flow.
From the EIP programme for the South Area Committee, a proposal to put in a signalised crossing. (The report mentions Fulbrooke Road (which is in Newnham and not part of this patch) but I think it means here instead.) It's likely to get South Area Transport Corridor funding. No more details given.
