  • Dangerous unsignalled crossing of Rutland Road on Penistone Road cycle path

Created by Sam Wakeling // 1 thread

The off-road cycle path along Penistone Road requires you to cross Rutland Road in two stages with no signalled phase. It is a large multi-lane junction and difficult to determine whether approaching motor traffic is about to turn across your path. It is also especially difficult and dangerous to attempt a dash across a large road between motor traffic phases from a standing start on a bike.

A toucan crossing and realignment to straighten out the current dog-leg between crossing stages would greatly improve safety on the Penistone Road cycle path at this point.

  • Pope's Lane Toucan in wrong position

Created by Space Pootler // 1 thread

The toucan crossing across Popes Lane at Olive Road is only useful for pedestrians, as cyclists need to ride up onto the pavement as an uncomfortable detour in order to request the crossing.

There needs to be a request button of some sort at the road crossing itself, and some guarantee that the signals are visible by crossing cyclist and motor traffic.

  • Improve toucan crossing across Morrison Street at Ladyfield

Created by Chris Paton // 0 threads

    What?
Move the toucan crossing across Morrison Street a few metres to properly align with Ladyfield and provide improved signage.

    Why?
There is already a crossing at this location but it's awkwardly positioned making it unclear that there is in fact a through route between the NCN at the Union Canal and Ladyfield, ultimately forming a traffic free link to the West End. Small improvements here would help provide a clearer through route that is both quiet and safe, avoiding the need for cyclists to go along Morrison Street or Lothian Road.

    How?
A small realignment of the crossing with Ladyfield to follow the desire line would make the through route much clearer. Adding blue signage with destinations would also raise awareness of the route with both pedestrians and cyclists alike.

  • Improved connection between Raeburn Place and St Bernard's Row

Created by Chris Paton // 0 threads

    What?
Improve the connection between Raeburn Place and St Bernard's Row.

    Why?
St Bernard's Row is already a quiet street thanks to the ban on vehicle traffic at Raeburn Place. Northbound, St Bernard's Row is a key link towards family attractions like Inverleith Park and the Botanic Gardens and also provides access to family route 20. Conversely, it provides an effective southbound route into Stockbridge and the city centre from Arboretum, Inverleith, and even Wardie and Granton. The present connection between the St Bernard's Row and Raeburn Place has some cycling provision but a small amount of additional investment could encourage greater use and turn this into a key through route. This would avoid the need for cyclists to use the Water of Leith via Haugh Street which is an indirect and cumbersome route and clashes with pedestrians.

    How?
The simplest improvement would be blue signage (there is currently just a no vehicles sign which doesn't encourage cyclists to use the facility) to make clear that cyclists can actually cross the pavement from Raeburn Place into St Bernard's Row. A proper dropped kerb would also be a big improvement along with appropriate markings (and preferably lead-up bike lanes) to show the route cyclists should take.
Ideally though, the nearby pedestrian crossing would additionally be upgraded to a toucan crossing so that less confident cyclists can safely turn right from Raeburn Place into St Bernard's Row (northbound) and turn right from St Bernard's Row into Raeburn Place (westbound). The best solution would involve relocating the crossing a few metres so that there is a clear alignment with the end of St Bernard's Row, though this may be tricky due to the junction with the opposite Dean Street.

  • 'Arthur' crossing of Castle Street

Created by Thomas Lancaster // 0 threads

Not strictly a cycle issue as cyclists can turn left up Castle Street from Long Garden Walk (and vis versa) using the build-out on the west side of Castle Street. However for our fellow Scholars Greenway users the lack of a build-out on the east side of Castle Street leaves them stranded mid-crossing with their way blocked by parked cars. Especially problematic for pushchair and mobility scooter users and the nearby Farnham 3rd Scout Group who want to cross and get access to Farnham Park.

  • Proposed Zebra Crossing and Relocation of Residents Parking Bay, Albion Row and Mount Pleasant

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Cambridgeshire County Council as part of a Local Highways Improvement scheme proposes to install a Zebra Crossing on Albion Row, Cambridge. To allow for the Zebra Crossing, it is proposed to relocate the existing Residents Parking Bays onto the south east end of Mount Pleasant, replacing a length of the existing Pay and Display.

  • Toucan crossing

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 1 thread

Very difficult to cross here, coming from Brunstane Burn Walkway to turn right towards Musselburgh.

The timing of the traffic lights seems to be such that there is almost always traffic from one direction, so one often has to wait for very long here.

  • Toucan crossing

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 0 threads

Important crossing point between Craigmillar Castle Park and Inch Park. Very dangerous because the bends in Old Dalkeith Road make cars from both directions difficult to see, and the width of the road encourages speeding well above 30mph (there is a speed display which is triggered by most cars).

  • Convert pelican to toucan

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 0 threads

Convert the existing pelican crossing to toucan. Needs also a dropped kerb before the lights so that you can get there from the cycle lane.

The reason is that it is very difficult to turn left into Walter Scott Avenue from Dalkeith Road. It is uphills with a lot of traffic, making it very unpleasant and quite dangerous to leave the cycle lane and move into the centre of the road for turning left.

  • Sheen Road _ Pedestrian Crossing Consultation

Created by Ross // 2 threads

    https://consultation.richmond.gov.uk/community-engagement/sheen-road-proposed-zebra-crossing-upgrade/consult_view

    Let's see what happens!

Council Plans to change the Zebra crossing in this area. RCC responded to try to shape the plans to encourage more cycling and walking.
    -------
Sheen Road Zebra Crossing Proposed Upgrade - Response from Richmond Cycling Campaign (RCC)

RCC is in general supportive of improving crossings when the upgrades benefit both pedestrians and cyclists. This proposal unfortunately has not fully thought through the interaction of cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles, unfortunately we cannot support it in its current form.

RCC would recommend that the scheme is implemented with the changes outlined below. The recommended changes will ensure that vulnerable road users safety is prioritised and the comfort of the cycling and pedestrian experience is enhanced:

The crossing should be raised to slow approaching vehicles. Vehicle speeds are too high in this area, particularly considering the proximity to a primary school.
Removal of the central refuge to create a single stage crossing is to be applauded. This will remove a cycle pinch point and will correctly prioritise pedestrians over other road users.
The new road space that is created by the removal of the central refuge should be used to extend the existing mandatory cycle lanes on each side of the carriageway. It is our understanding that the 2015 TSRGD (traffic signs regulations and general directions) will permit the extension of the cycle lanes over the crossing. The work should pay heed to this so that this can be incorporated when the new regulations go live.
Keep the zebra crossing. RCC cannot support the removal of the zebra crossing at this location, changing to a traffic light controlled crossing, prioritises vehicular traffic over pedestrians and those on bicycles. It is RCC’s belief that concerns, from users, that vehicles are not stopping in a timely fashion at this location are due to excessive speeds rather than the style of crossing. As mentioned earlier lower speeds should be achieved through a raised crossing to make the zebra crossing more effective. An enhanced zebra crossing keeps priority with the most vulnerable road users.
The proposal suggests widening the pavement to make the crossing shorter. This would only have a marginal impact on the time to cross. The pavements should not be widened since this will not permit a continuous cycle lane. It will force cyclists to pull in front of fast moving motor vehicles, creating a new pinch point and hazard for cyclists.
The railings on either side of the road should be removed. TfL research has shown that these encourage high traffic speeds and do little to protect vulnerable road users.

  • Alresford Creek Crossing

Created by Gary // 1 thread

Following closely the route of an old railway line between Colchester and Brightlingsea this proposed route would link Colchester to Walton-on-the-Naze. It provides a much needed commuter route out of Brightlingsea linking it safely to Wivenhoe, the University of Essex and Colchester and creates a new leisure route in a holiday district. It builds on the existing four mile NCN51 route from Colchester to Wivenhoe by adding 5 miles off-road to Brightlingsea via a new river crossing at Alresford Creek. From there it utilises an existing pleasant frequent summer ferry crossing to Point Clear and creates a 25 mile coastal route much of it off-road.

  • SMALL SCHEMES, BIG CHANGES - BARNSTAPLE

Created by North Devon Cycling Forum // 0 threads

Closure of lay-by Mill Hill B3233 to improve safety on cycle route Barnstaple-Fremington. Current situation for cycling FROM Barnstaple TO Fremington is lethal; this is NOT a safe route! Alternatively, to keep the car park function of the lay-by, a new entrance to the lay-by is possible by creating a STRAIGHT T-junction onto the main road at the eastern end of the lay-by.
