  • Create Cycle Portals

Created by Jon Jennings // 3 threads

Public transport is limited as it does not give a door to door service making it impracticable for many people, and also it's slow on congested roads. Cycling does give that flexibility of allowing people to travel as and where they want quickly, however is no good for most people who need to travel more than 5 miles. Sitting in my car on the way to work, in a traffic jam, watching all the cranes and building work going on in Cambridge bringing more people into the area, I was wondering how to solve this conundrum.
So I hit upon the idea of having Cycle Portals, or simply put combining public transport with cycles. For example by running a roll on roll off Bus between Is Ives and Cambridge, commuters could cycle the first part of their journey from home to the "Cycle Portal" and cycle onto a open plan bus ( i.e. a modified bendy bus with big doors and no seats ). The bus would wiz along the busway to the "Exit Portal" in Cambridge where they could disembark and continue their journeys to wherever.
The more I think about it the more I think this has great potential at creating a real alternative to the car. With Cycle Portals to places like Addenbrookes, Sawston, new housing developments outside of Cambridge and so on cycling could provide a quick door to door transport solution. Your views?

  • City Deal funding for restrictions to car parking

Created by Jim Chisholm // 1 thread

The Greater Cambridge City Deal has allocated £22 million over the next 5 years for:
"City Centre capacity improvements/cross-city cycle improvements"
    see:
    http://www.gccitydeal.co.uk/citydeal/info/2/transport/1/transport/2

Removal of car parking is an easily achievable way of making cycling more pleasant (and safer) Both the removal/relocation of Pay and Display and restrictions to all day commuter car parking on residential roads that form part of 'quiet roads' for cycling should form part of this funding stream.

  • Rope Walk cars park in cycle lane westbound

Created by Kevin Ablitt // 1 thread

It is a constant problem that car drivers think it is acceptable to park in this particular spot.
The single yellow needs upgrading to double yellow lines ( is this enforced anyway ) OR we need hard infrastruture design which prevents such selfish behaviour.

  • Access to Cambridge station from north and east

Created by Oscar Hughes // 2 threads

Large numbers of cyclists and pedestrians access Cambridge station from Devonshire Road and from the pedestrian and cycle bridge through the car park. This is unsafe, unpleasant and dangerous. How could we develop alternatives? A better route along Station Road and Tenison Road? Direct access to the station from the east doesn't really seem feasible.

  • Consultation (by 26Sep'14) - to end max car parking standards?

Quote: para 2.77 "The Government supports the motorist and wants to see adequate parking provision for them...."

Question 2.16: Do you agree that parking policy should be strengthened to tackle on-street parking problems by restricting powers to set maximum parking standards?

Not a simple issue, but probably worth CCyC's commenting.

  • Car parking on cycle path at North Foreland

Created by Gregory Williams // 1 thread

Inconsiderate parking of cars on the shared-use RCR15 Viking Coastal Trail cycle path at North Foreland. This has completely blocked the path to cyclists and pedestrians. The photo clearly shows a pedestrian trying to get past the parked vehicles.

  • Orchard Park, shops

Created by Heather Coleman // 0 threads

An article in today's Cambridge News about the new shops in Orchard Park isn't encouraging reading.

    Link to article is
    http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Home/Build-us-some-more-shops-or-well-all-get-in-our-cars-17022012.htm

The headline says it all. They are proposing shops that will probably only act as "corner shops" so people will all drive along the A14 or Kings Hedges Road to Milton Tesco.

This seems on the face of it, to add to the general anti-cycling design that Orchard Park has had since the first bulldozers went into action. I don't know what others think, or what can be done about it. Presumably a too large supermarket isn't wanted there, as then it would become a magnet for people outside of Orchard Park to drive to, unless, but this is not a suggestion that is possible, it had virtually no car parking, just for the disabled, but lots of bike parking, and good smooth pedestrian paths to all the houses.

  • South Cambridge (car) Parking Review

Created by Jim Chisholm // 1 thread

The County is proposing a 'controlled parking zone' to cover a wide area around Addenbrooke's. The exact limits are to be discussed, and issues will arise in area of new housing where the roads are yet to be adopted.
