Retailers consistently overestimate how many of their customers travel by car (Shoppers and how they travel, a 2006 study of Gloucester Road conducted by Bristol City Council and Sustrans http://bit.ly/ji5hgR). The estimates of customer transport options were: car 41%, bus 11%, bicycle 6% and foot 42%. The actual numbers were: car 22%, bus 13%, bicycle 10% and foot 55%. Retailers concerns about the removal of on-street parking are unfounded, and the benefits of pedestrianisation to local businesses underestimated.
