Camcycle's time and energy is consistently taken up removing exclusionary barriers (e.g. Biomedical Campus, A14 active travel bridges, Warren Road). We need to consider long-term ways to prevent new barriers going in and remove existing ones which prevent people of all ages and abilities cycling.

I'm new here, so this has probably been done before, but I haven't sussed out how to find any relevant previous discussion using the search. So sorry if this is repetition.
There are lots of farm roads around Cambridge, some of which have locked gates and "bicycles by written permission only" notices, others are signed as permissive routes, others have no signs but in practice nobody actually shouts at you as you cycle through what turns out to be a farmyard.
Are there any resources that enable us to work out in advance, before discovering the sign and the locked gate, which of these roads are passable by bike, with possibly a rather long route home if the answer is "no"?
Just as an example, how about Battle Gate Road?

From the county:
In addition to the notification which I sent to you on Monday 11 April 2022 regarding the order to divert part of Longstanton Bridleway 10, I am emailing you to consult you on a proposal to re-surface the northern part of Longstanton Bridleway 10 between the new bridge across the access road to Northstowe and the southern end of the Wilsons Road by Falcon Park.
The proposal to re-surface the northern part of Longstanton Bridleway 10 is related to Condition 59 of Northstowe Phase 2 (S/2011/14/OL) which is subject to submission of details to Greater Cambridge Shared Planning consultation S/2011/14/COND59. In order to achieve a continuous all-weather NMU link between Longstanton, Bar Hill and the new A14 NMU path I am consulting you on what type of surfacing you would like to see on the route (coloured in pink on the attached plan). The route will need to provide an upgraded route that caters for all non-motorised users (walkers, cyclists and horse-riders) all year round.
The southern section of Longstanton Bridleway 10 between the A1307 and the new NMU bridge over the Northstowe access road was surfaced last year and I am interested in whether a similar type of surface would be suitable on the northern section of the bridleway. The northern section of Longstanton Bridleway 10 is generally quite wide and located between tree/hedge lines. I am proposing that any re-surfacing on the northern part of the bridleway follows the principle of providing a 50-50 parallel surface (50% retaining grass/natural surface next to 50% smooth surface suitable for cyclists and pedestrians such as the surface which is in place on the southern part of Longstanton Bridleway 10 or the surface which has just been completed on Reynolds Drove, Rampton north of the busway). Between the boundary features on the northern part of Longstanton Bridleway 10 there is generally at least 5 metres of width available which in theory could accommodate 2.5 metres of natural surface next to 2.5 metres of foot/cycling surface.
The re-surfacing of the bridleway associated with the planning condition is for the developer (Homes England) to deliver, but I am seeking your opinions on what you would like to see in this location which I will then use to inform my feedback to Homes England and Greater Cambridge Planning on the condition which needs to deliver improvements to the northern part of Longstanton Bridleway 10.
I would be much obliged if I could have your comments back on this matter by Friday 29 April 2022.

The Food, Farming and Countryside commission is 'touring' the countryside to gather views about land in Cambs and Peterborough:
Listening Tour: Your Views on Land in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
We ask a lot of land. We need it to grow food, restore biodiversity and nature, decarbonise the
economy and adapt to climate change – while also providing space for new homes, access to nature
for leisure and wellbeing and the infrastructure for business, energy and transport. In England, there
is currently no coordinated way of balancing all of these pressures.
Planners are often faced with agreeing the ‘least-worst’ development proposals. Local people have
little say when their valued open countryside, green spaces, or even allotments are lost to other
uses. We want to test ideas for a more strategic and effective approach that will support action to
deliver net zero, nature recovery, clean air and water, economic development, and food production.
A land use framework will also help individual landowners and farmers make long term plans as they
face a raft of new support mechanisms; to help assess what their land is best used for in the context
of the wider landscape.
We want to hear from people about the places where they live and work and what they value most
there. We want to hear people’s hopes, fears and aspirations for their local environment and what
they would like to improve. We’re interested in towns, villages, farms, landscapes and wildlife, food,
roads, rivers, transport, heritage and employment. What changes are coming and how can they best
be addressed? How can local people be involved in defining what Cambridgeshire is like in 20 years’
time?
We hope the meeting will be interesting and lively, and that you share your views. We will include a
short introduction to the topic about how places have been changing over time and the competing
pressures on land to open up the discussion.
These meetings will form part of a wider “tour” gathering views right across Cambridgeshire. They
will all contribute to a Land Use Framework being developed by people and organisations right across
Cambridgeshire. For more information: https://ffcc.co.uk/land-use-framework

There are 1970s-style barriers separating Charles Street and Rustat Road. This means that the large numbers of cyclists heading in both directions often have to give way to each other. These barriers need replacing by a removable bollard in the centre of the route, so cyclists can easily pass on the correct side as they would any other traffic island but cars can't get through. This is a literal barrier to easy safe convenient cycling and has no place in 21st Century Cambridge. Especially when there is an easy solution around it.

Havering council said:
"We wrote to you on 21st October setting out a series of safety proposals for Romford town
centre comprising of a 20mph zone for all streets within the Romford Ring Road (including
some traffic calming measures) and some changes to road markings on various
roundabouts on the Ring Road itself.
We sent out over 2,500 letters to people in the area, but only received 8 responses with 4
of these being from residents. This was reported to the Council’s Highways Advisory
Committee on 6th December where the decision on the scheme was deferred in order for
further discussions to take place with ward councillors.
As a result of these discussions, it has been decided to provide a further period of
consultation and any other comments received shall be reported to the Highways Advisory
Committee on 7th February 2017.
We would therefore like to extend the opportunity for you to provide any comments you
may have to the postal address above, via our email address highways@havering.gov.uk
or through an online form which we have provided at www.havering.gov.uk/consultations."

Tower Hamlets Council is committed to making the borough a safer place for all road users by delivering a range of street improvements in the area; intending to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and public transport users alike.
Influencing positive changes in road user behaviour is key in providing a safe road environment for the community and although changes in road layout can’t fully resolve this, redesign of our streets can help. Therefore, Chrisp Street and the surrounding areas are currently being invested in with aims to improve road safety for the local community.
Please give us your feedback by filling in the survey (below the map). You may also like to add a comment to our interactive map of the wider area.

"Waltham Forest is changing and we want you to be part of it. Thanks to a funding pot of £27 million from Transport for London, we’re delivering the Mini-Holland Programme to make our streets fit for everyone to use, whether you walk, cycle, use public transport or drive.
The Highams Park Town Centre scheme area has over 6,500 addresses and includes the area framed by North Circular Road, Hatch Lane, Woodford New Road and other minor roads. We want to make it easier for you to walk and cycle local journeys should you choose to. We also want to improve the look and feel of the area, making it an even more enjoyable place, boosting business and giving residents a sense of pride in their community."

This junction is currently very poor. Cyclists end up doing awkward manoeuvres and visibility is not good.
It is possible this could be improved as part of the Chisholm Trail.
How could this junction be redesigned to make it best practice?

Portsdown Hill Road & James Callaghan drive are a set of roads along the top of Portsdown Hill that is currently used by a lot of cyclists for commuting, touring and leisure facilties due to the forts, views and open areas around it.
As such, it's a well known tourist spot to stop for a burger or take a picnic and fly a kite.
However, being on top of an exposed hill results in significant side winds which results in cyclists being blown about by gusts, and therefore all cyclists need to take primary position on this road to give them space. As a 40mph road, many drivers have significant issues with cyclists taking primary, and therefore perform many punishment/close passes.
The affect of this on cycling in the area is many
1) More people would cycle from the surrounding areas ( Waterlooville, Havant, Fareham/Lee on Solent ) to work at QA Hospital or the businesses on the hill if there were better cycle infrastructure.
2) More people would cycle from the surrounding area & to enjoy the space & views if it felt safer to get there.

Westminster council are doing two important things at the moment. There is a consultation on "Oxford Street District" here: https://osd.london
The other thing WCC are doing is going to close Riding House Street with the Camden boundary at the junction of Cleveland Street by installing bollards across the road. The street has already been closed for over a year and it has had no negative impact. Camden have already done this at Fitzroy Square and Warren Street and it has been very positive. We need to do more of the same.
The issue of through traffic -- including Torrington Place -- needs to be dealt with as a matter of urgency. All areas of Fitzrovia are above the legal limit for NO2, except for Crabtree Fields open space. (Sample readings: 55 µg/m3 - legal limit is 40 µg/m3. NO2 pollution on Oxford Street east is 66 µg/m3 & on Euston Road it is 84 µg/m3.)
Camden has so far refused to entertain the two road closures I have suggested - Torrington Place and Goodge Place.
I am now going to suggest the following road closures to Camden and Westminster to make Fitzrovia "access only".
Close Goodge Street at Westminster boundary at junction with Goodge Place; close New Cavendish Street at the junction with Cleveland Street, and finally close Clipstone Street at the junction with Cleveland Street (this would also require Cleveland Street to be one-way north bound).
I believe it will not impact on access to all streets by motor vehicles for deliveries and drop-offs, etc. But it will eliminate entirely motor through traffic across the Camden/Westminster border and mitigate the effect of Gower Street northbound traffic turning into Torrington Place. This would also cut down on traffic along Grafton Way which also a victim of WEP.

This 7.5km route would stretch from Hackney to the Isle of Dogs via Westferry, Mile End and Victoria Park. It would connect with the cycle routes between Stratford and Aldgate and Barking to Tower Hill, as well as the proposed Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf crossing. Bunbury Road is busy, but road users emerging from Woodlands Park Road and Northfield Road have to play a game of chicken as they try to judge the best moment to make a rapid exit without crashing into each other. Adding to the processing overload, the following must also be taken into account by road users:
* A service road opposite Woodlands Park Road connects with Bunbury Road at this point.
* A cycle path runs from the junction down to Bunbury Gardens.
* A zebra crossing, one that many motorists (including police drivers) fail to stop for, presumably because of the processing overload.
Lacking acceleration, cyclists face a long wait either at the junction or the zebra crossing. Either way they risk being mown down by a motorist lacking the superhuman skills required to negotiate this junction safely. Since even police drivers make dangerous mistakes here, then it is clearly hopelessly wrong.
There is quite a bit of space here. I would suggest as a minimum a single lane roundabout be created, but since Bunbury Road is busy and there is already a cycle path here it should be made a proper Dutch-style roundabout. To ease the design, close Northfield Road at this point to motor traffic (Northfield Road runs parallel to Bunbury Road).

The shared access path on Colne road, on its north side, creates conflict between cycles and vehicles. The provision seems worse than using the road. The presence of commercial premises on both sides of this road make the use of a shared access path highly problematic.

This is a well used route already but very muddy as there is no surfaced footpath across the playing field. A dropped kerb at the end of Noble Grove and a surfaced path around the football pitches to a dropped kerb on Parkhead Loaning would be a significant improvement. A type 1 and dust path as detailed in the attached link would perhaps be more suitable than a fully tarmacked path. Lighting at the points of entry to the grassed area would be an added benefit as this is currently a very dark route.
