  • Clayponds Avenue Surface

Created by Space Pootler // 1 thread

Clayponds Avenue is a crucial cycling link between South Ealing and the Great West Road, but the surface is so full of potholes as to be a risk to ride on. Nearly all group rides make use of the Olive Road/South Ealing Cemetery/Clayponds link, but it remains largely ignored by Hounslow Highways since requests for repairs began to be filed in 2013. As of late 2015, one individual recorded no fewer than 47 separate potholes.

There are also scars left over from the removal of pedestrian refuge islands and other road furniture.

  • City Centre Cycle Route

Created by Dexter Johnstone // 1 thread

City Centre route currently being designed by Sheffield Council, supposed to be STEP funded.

This is the info we have so far:

    Portobello – Leopold
Current provision does not offer a consistent high quality route To create a high quality Dutch style cycle route between City Centre and University This will form part of the City Centre cycle network.

To create cycle street i.e. a street where cyclists have priority and motor vehicles are 'guests'. This to follow line of existing (westerly) cycle route on Portobello St.

Issues to be looked at/Initial thoughts
Crossing Mappin St – bicycle priority, may require temporary protection until motorists get accustomed to the idea
Crossing Rockingham Street – to be determined refer to CROW standards
Trippet Lane –point closure opposing one-way for motorised vehicles west of Bailey Street, allows access to businesses unloading etc. and parking remains on eastern side of closure (between Bailey Lane and Leopold Street)

    Portobello St

    • Remove contra flow cycle lane
    • No road closure to enable access for emergency vehicles if necessary
    • 2 Disabled Parking spaces to remain
    • Access to University car park from Orange St remains the same.
Access to existing small businesses to remain the same

Bailey Street existing “no right turn” into Broad Lane to be removed

  • Junction Road - Cycle Improvement Scheme

Created by David Lincoln // 1 thread

NB: For drawing of the scheme see the PDF posted here: http://www.cyclescape.org/threads/2377#message_30253

    Dear Resident/Trader,

Islington Council have proposals to make improvements for cyclists on Junction Road.

The main improvements for cyclists are mandatory northbound and southbound cycle lanes between Tufnell Park Road and Bredgar Road.

Traffic islands near the junction of Dartmouth Park Hill and Cathcart Hill will be removed to create extra carriageway space for the cycle lanes. The existing bus stops on Junction Road will be unchanged.

Some existing parking bays will need to be relocated or removed to accommodate the new cycle lanes. There will be a net loss of 8 parking bays on Junction Road. However the council will further investigate ways to mitigate parking loss during detailed design.

Parking bays No. 81 - 89 Junction Road and No. 84 Junction Road and No. 1 Linden Walk will be removed.

There will be some parking bays which are partially on footway and partially on the carriageway which are located:

    • outside No. 132D – 140D Junction Road.
    • outside No. 114 - 122 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 127 – 145 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 104 – 112 Junction Road.
    • outside No. 151 - 165 Junction Road.

The proposals include parking bays being relocated on to the footway outside Silver Court, Junction Road with an increase of one parking space and outside Ash Court, Junction Rd with an increase of one parking space.

Some existing parking bays will need to be relocated or removed to accommodate the new cycle lanes. There will be a net loss of 8 parking bays on Junction Road. Three new residents parking bays will be created on Wyndham Crescent to mitigate against the loss of parking spaces on Junction Road.

To increase the number of short-term parking bays there are proposals to convert existing resident parking bays to shared-use (residents and pay and display) bays in Brookside Road. The council is proposing to add three additional resident parking bays on Wyndham Crescent, two near the junction of Dartmouth Park Hill and the third near Bishops Close. (See Figure 2).

Figure 1 below is a plan showing the proposals on Junction Road.

  • Dangerous traffic light timings

Created by David Lally // 1 thread

These details reported on Nottinghamshire's web site:

"The timing of the lights here poses a significant threat to cyclists. A number of times recently while westbound on Nottingham Road I have been over the stop line when seeing that the lights have changed to amber (observing the nearside light at the very corner of the junction). On each occasion I have been travelling at a pretty average commuting speed (I?d estimate 8 - 12 mph). At this speed I have been about level with the central island of Barton Lane when the lights for traffic emerging northbound from there have turned amber and right in the middle of that entrance to the junction when they have turned green. This has lead to some close encounters (not to mention abuse) from drivers setting off in the usual ?It?s on green so nothing should be in my way!? attitude. Please consider lengthening the time between amber for traffic on Nottingham Road and green for cars emerging from Barton Lane. "

The apostrophe to question mark substitution appears to be as a result of the web site's text encoding.

  • North-South Cycle Superhighway (extension to Kings Cross)

Created by Jean Dollimore // 3 threads

The North-South Cycle Superhighway is already under construction between Stonecutter Street and Elephant & Castle.

TfL, together with Camden and Islington Councils, is now consulting on proposals to extend it north up to King’s Cross.

The proposal is that it should continue north on Farringdon Road to Greville Street where northbound cyclists would turn onto a quiet back-street route to King’s Cross.

Southbound cyclists from King’s Cross would turn off the back-street route onto Farringdon Road at Ray Street via a new signalised junction and continue south on a stepped cycle track.

  • Western Orbital - M11 bus link - City Deal

Created by Roxanne (Cycling Campaign Officer) // 3 threads

Another City Deal consultation we should be aware of. Closes 21st March.

    Western Orbital

We welcome your views on initial ideas to create a ‘Western Orbital’, a new, fast and reliable link for buses between the west and south of Cambridge either along or near the M11. Other improvements aimed at encouraging people to travel by bus or cycle for all or parts of their journeys are also suggested.

Currently taking the bus from Madingley Road to Addenbrooke’s Hospital requires travelling through the city centre, which can often be congested, making journeys slow and unreliable. According to Stagecoach’s timetables, journeys on the Uni 4 service take 32 minutes to complete this 5 mile route.

Journeys on a ‘Western Orbital’ link between M11 Junction 13/Madingley Road and Addenbrooke’s Hospital would take around:

18 to 19 minutes on a route along the M11
15 to 16 minutes on a route very near to the M11 to either the east or west

A ‘Western Orbital’ link between Junction 11 (Trumpington) and Junction 13 (Madingley Road) would:

Connect to and from major housing and employment sites: Trumpington Meadows; Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Biomedical Campus; the West Cambridge site; the North West Cambridge site as well as an onward link to Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge Business Park and the future Cambridge North Rail Station
Connect to the existing Busway in the south at Trumpington and in the north at Orchard Park via new developments in North West Cambridge

Creating ‘orbital’ bus and cycle links would encourage sustainable travel and offer an alternative to travelling through the city centre. Dedicated off-road cycling routes encourage travel by bike and offer a safer alternative to busy roads.

We need your feedback in order to help improve these initial ideas and shape the scheme. These proposals will only go ahead with landowner agreements and public support and are subject to the decision of elected politicians on the City Deal Executive Board.

  • Changes to the King's Cross gyratory

Created by George Coulouris // 1 thread

TfL are consulting on a major scheme aimed at improving the roads in the Kings Cross area. The consultation proposes the conversion of several key roads from one-way to two-way working (York Way, Pentonville Road, Gray's Inn Road and Caledonian Road). New cycle facilities proposed include cycle contraflow lanes on Wharfedale Road, King's Cross Road, Penton Rise and Acton Street. New signalised crossings for cycles are suggested at Lorenzo Street and Pentonville Road and Penton Rise and Pentonville Road.

There is no discussion of the engineering details. Those are promised for early 2017 following the results of this consultation.

An important issue for cycle campaigners will be the feasibility of achieving protected space on the main alignments through the area.

  • Right turn from St Andrew's St into Downing Street

Created by Anna Langley // 2 threads

This intersection needs a right turn light for bikes turning from St Andrew's Street into the Downing Street contraflow lane.

Doing so feels unsafe with buses coming up from behind, and little opportunity to get across the intersection.

I'm considering setting up a 38 Degrees petition on the matter, but wanted to see if this issue had been campaigned on before.

  • A10 Stamford Hill and Clapton Common junction consultation

    Created by Harry Fletcher-Wood // 1 thread

TfL note that this junction has "one of the highest collision rates in all of Hackney" and so have "come up with some proposals that aim to make this junction safer for all road users".

The substantive changes include Advanced Stop Lanes for people cycling, continuous footways across some side roads, realignments to traffic islands and the provision of more/longer parking.

Please make share your thoughts Tuesday 23rd February so Natalie and I can collate them.

  • Avenue bus stop obstruction

Created by Kieren // 10 threads

Bus stop faces the opposite way to most others on the avenue, causes cyclists to get in the way of pedestrians (and vice versa). Either have to shuffle past people waiting and try to avoid the holly bush or go down the outside with barely any space with a chance of toppling into the road if you make a mistake.

  • Lower Clapton Road / Urswick Road Junction Consultation

    Created by Harry Fletcher-Wood // 1 thread

Hackney Council "are proposing to alter the layout of the junction to remove existing traffic and pedestrian signals. They would be replaced by an ‘informal’ roundabout and distinctive informal pedestrian crossings. The road surface would be raised to help encourage lower vehicle speeds. However, there would still be a detectable kerb height between the road and the footway."

"The proposed changes have been designed to help the junction operate more efficiently and are expected to result in improved journey times for all users, particularly bus services. We also expect that pedestrian crossing times would improve. The proposals have also been designed to reduce vehicle speeds and create a more pleasant environment."

"In designing our scheme we drew inspiration from several successful applications of the concept. For example, schemes in Bexleyheath (London Borough of Bexley), and Poynton (Cheshire), have resulted in significant improvements to the junctions, transforming the urban realm in areas that were previously blighted by traffic congestion and pollution."

  • Seven Sisters Road Consultation

    Created by Harry Fletcher-Wood // 1 thread

The Woodberry Down Development Team (Hackney Council, Berkeley Homes and supported by Transport for London) are consulting on "changes to Seven Sisters Road, from Green Lanes to the west and Amhurst Park to the east, as part of the on‑going regeneration of the area".

    They have offered six 'ideas':
    1) Reduce road to two lanes in either direction (one general traffic lane, one bus lane)
    2) Reduce road to two lanes (one general traffic, one bus) in either direction, but widen to three lanes at junctions
    3) Increase the number of pedestrian crossings
4a) Add a 'pedestrian island slip' between the two carriageways
4b) Add a wide 'pedestrian island slip' with planting and trees
    5) Segregated cycle lanes
    6) Widen bus lanes

Different combinations are possible. For example, 1 (change traffic lanes) would be necessary for 4 (pedestrian island slip) and 5 (segregated cycle lanes). 1 (change traffic lanes), 4a (pedestrian island slip) and 5 (segregated cycle lanes) would work together, whereas 2 (change traffic lanes but keep three lanes at junction) would make pavement widening and segregated cycle lanes impossible.

Please respond by Sunday 15th February so that Natalie and Harry can draft a response representing Hackney Cycling Campaign's position.

  • Cycle route blocked outside Electric Works

Created by Matt Turner // 1 thread

The cycle route that runs past Electric Works has been blocked by big white wooden sheets, it looks like this is for development of some kind.

There is a parallel route (perhaps the official one?) on the footway (shared unsegregated) on Sheaf Street, but it's far too narrow to be acceptable for a cycle route to the train station.

A temporary bark chipping path from the obstruction down to Sheaf Street, but it's not suitable for cycling on.

  • Spital Hill - Better Buses'

Created by Dexter Johnstone // 1 thread

Road layout changes to Spital Hill. These changes were identified as potentially dangerous by Sheffield Council Cycle Audit, however, they are still going ahead.

    CycleSheffield response to changes:
Commenting on the specifics of this design, which leaves the road fundamentally unsafe for cyclists, might be seen to condone it, so we will refrain. The minor changes represent no significant improvement for cyclists (existing or potential).

In summary: Spital Hill is the natural major cycle route connecting the Burngreave and Pitsmoor to the city centre. There is no convenient alternative.

Again this is an extremely busy road, with a complex junction. During rush hour, having to compete for lane spaces with 10 ton busses and numerous taxi cabs which will be switching lanes, is unpleasant and risky, and will in itself discourage inexperienced cyclists to start cycle commuting. In addition the proposed lane layouts are confusing to both motorists and cyclists which will lead to unpredictable road behaviour which is a further grave risk to cyclists in the traffic stream.

Both the traffic volumes and complexity of the junction make it unreasonable to expect people to share them for cycling.

The width of the streets (both Savile Street and A6135/Spital Hill) have ample room for the Council to provide protected space for cycling. It is disappointing that Sheffield City Council has not taken the opportunity to utilise this space to allow people in Sheffield to cycle safely and confidently in this area.
