  • Left turns from bidirectional North-South CSH

Created by Bruce Lynn // 1 thread

Problem with bidirectional paths is making left turns across the traffic. For North-South Cycle Superhighway TfL proposed a small waiting area with protective island (see illustration from Consultation document). They built one island and found cars going wrong way round it, so removed the island. So left turns waiting bays now have only white paint (see photos at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/miscellaneous.html). Very intimidating when traffic is heading towards you from the opposite motor traffic lane!
I understand TfL is "working on a solution". But does anyone have ideas we could feed to TfL. Does anyone know of an example where an "offside" left turn has been well engineered?

  • Petty Cury Cambridge

Created by Heron // 2 threads

I am mostly a walking pedestrian in our fair city of Cambridge.

There are not many areas where I can walk without being mown down by unexpected cyclists.

Please, please alert yr members that Petty Cury is a no riding a bike area. There are other areas within Cambridge, Christs Pieces areas - Fitzroy and Burleigh Street.

These areas are thronged with slow moving pedestrians often with children running about

  • Barnsley Road widening - "Better Buses"

Created by Dexter Johnstone // 1 thread

It can take vehicles more than 8 minutes to travel the 600m of Barnsley Road between Earl Marshall Road and Orphanage Road. See the proposed changes below. Let us know what you think by Friday 13th May 2016.
There will be a new lay-by at the Orphanage Road bus stop (on Barnsley Road) so buses using it don't block the road.
We will widen Barnsley Road and provide right-turn lanes in the middle at the junctions with Scott Road and Firshill Avenue. This will allow traffic to pass by right-turners. Buses will also be able to turn into Scott Road more easily and safely.
We will alter the pedestrian crossing point, speed cushions and bus stops on Scott Road to allow for the Barnsley Road changes. There will be some additional double yellow lines to help traffic there to keep moving.
Some parking would be removed on Scott Road, but our surveys indicate that there will be enough parking between Passhouses Road and Barnsley Road for the number of vehicles that are usually parked.

  • Consultation: Cycling on the Felixstowe Promenade

Created by Shaun McDonald // 1 thread

    From: Felixstowe.Forward
    Sent: 15 April 2016 13:56
Subject: Consultation: Cycling on the Felixstowe Promenade

    Dear Colleagues,

Please could we ask you to share this information with staff, members (if you are a membership organisation) and forward on to anyone you think it may be of interest to. Thank you.

Felixstowe Forward is seeking your views on whether cycling should be allowed on Felixstowe Promenade.

Are you for it, or against it? Please let us know!

    Background

In January 1983, Suffolk Coastal District Council passed some byelaws about ‘Riding Bicycles’, which make cycling on the Felixstowe Promenade unlawful where there are signs put up to prohibit this.
There are signs on the Promenade which prohibit cycling, so it is currently unlawful to cycle along there.

In November 2015, Felixstowe Town Council considered the Byelaws purpose, asking if it was still appropriate.

The Town Council asked: ‘’Suffolk Coastal District Council to consider the removal of notices prohibiting cycling on Felixstowe Prom for a period of no less then 12months; and, pending an assessment of the success of this initiative, consider permitting and promoting safe and considerate cycling on the prom on a permanent basis’’believing that the Promenade should provide a safe environment for all to enjoy.

However, before it considers the Felixstowe Town Council proposal in detail, Suffolk Coastal is keen to find out what local people think – so has asked Felixstowe Forward to carry out a public consultation on this issue.

    Consultation
    There are two clear options:
Ø Keep the signs which prohibit cycling on the promenade, so continue to make it unlawful; or,
Ø Allow cycling, by removing the signs and making cycling on the promenade legal.

So, we would like you to answer this simple question: ‘Should Suffolk Coastal remove the signs and revoke the bylaw to make cycling on Felixstowe Promenade legal?’

We would welcome your opinion on this issue. Views will also be sought from relevant authorities, including the Police and Suffolk County Council.

    Timescale
This consultation will run from Monday, 18 April, to 5pm on Friday, 27 May 2016.

    Next Steps
The consultation results will then be reviewed, before a report is put before Suffolk Coastal’s Full Council for a decision on this issue.

We would appreciate your time in returning the attached, with any comments you wish to make – or email your response to me at felixstowe.forward@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.

    Thank you for your assistance.

  • Trixi mirrors needed to see around the corner

Created by Anna Langley // 1 thread

This bend where Hobson Street and St Andrew's Street meet, is quite a blind one. Buses and taxis go around it at speed, unaware of bikes coming the other way in the contraflow, and frequently take a line which could knock a cyclist off their bike. Likewise bike riders can't see what's coming.

It needs something like a couple of trixi mirrors so that drivers and riders alike can see around the corner and know what's coming.

Such a solution should be simple and cheap, and as far as I know, not need too much bureaucracy.

  • Dangerous unsignalled crossing of Rutland Road on Penistone Road cycle path

Created by Sam Wakeling // 1 thread

The off-road cycle path along Penistone Road requires you to cross Rutland Road in two stages with no signalled phase. It is a large multi-lane junction and difficult to determine whether approaching motor traffic is about to turn across your path. It is also especially difficult and dangerous to attempt a dash across a large road between motor traffic phases from a standing start on a bike.

A toucan crossing and realignment to straighten out the current dog-leg between crossing stages would greatly improve safety on the Penistone Road cycle path at this point.

  • Improvements to side roads on Kirkstall Road

    Created by M Stanley // 1 thread

We understand that there are scheduled improvements to several of the side roads on kirkstall roads. See below.

"The scheme is contained within the H&T Annual programme to be funded from the LTP.

There are a number of design issues - which you’re aware of – but we anticipate ( although programme still to be confirmed) the scheme being on site late summer/ early autumn.

The scheme concentrates on the junctions with the Haddons on the north side of Kirkstall Road"

  • Parking on the towpath entrance

Created by Anna Langley // 1 thread

A dropped kerb was created here to make it easier for cyclists (in particular) to get onto and off the towpath. Since then, and even more so since the demolition of the Penny Ferry pub, cars and vans have been using the space as a car park. Vehicles are parked there daily, and I have been photographing them as I go past. I have included a link so you can see what I mean.

I've contacted my county and city councillors, and the council itself. And the response has been silence.

    Suggestions please...

  • Charging for car parking on Cambridge University sites

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Cambridge University is proposing to introduce charging for car parking.

This is potentially an opportunity to see improvements in cycle parking at the same time.

"The Project Board recognises that this is a topic of considerable interest to the University and its staff, particularly the set of principles the HR Committee has recommended consulting on - namely that:

    - Car park charging should be introduced,
    - Charging should be salary-contingent and that salary sacrifice should apply if possible,
    - Management of permit allocation should be centralised,
    - There should be a maximum permit allocation per site,
    - Revenues generated should be ringfenced to support alternative modes of travel such as buses, trains and cycling."

  • Blockage of cycle lane by street light replacement

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Yet again, Balfour Beatty are doing an utterly shocking job on the street light replacements. I thought there was a thread about this somewhere but I can't find it thus can't find if we've got any contacts to directly complain to.

Basically, there's a large hole in the pavement around where I've put the pointer - not sure that's 100% accurate since I was occupied with other things. So the cycle lane is closed to allow pedestrians somewhere to walk.

That has been fine this week as it's the school holidays and there is virtually no traffic to speak of. Come Monday, when Hills Road is nose-to-tail gridlock, cyclists will be double and pedestrians probably doubled, it's going to be dangerous chaos. The pedestrian route will not actually be wide enough for all the pedestrians that walk along there on a school day - they will be queuing to get through, let alone the effect of all the 'stuck' cyclists who can't get into the car lane as that's queuing all the way to Cherry Hinton Road.

What is particularly annoying is that this hole has been there all week with no change.

Basically yet again, they've just dug holes, stuck up obstructions and gone off leaving them. How about digging the hole, doing the work, and filling in the hole in a timely manner. This whole now four-year operation has been a shambles from beginning to end.

Does anyone have any suggestions for direct phone numbers or email addresses so I can complain?

  • Lichfield Main Corridor Phase 1B(ii)

Created by Chris Lowe // 0 threads

"The second part of the Lichfield Road route in Phase 1B runs from Salford Circus along Gravelly Hill and Gravelly Hill North to Six Ways. The route uses a combination of mandatory and advisory cycle lanes as well as cycle symbols. In the section between Salford Circus and Kingsbury Road, the outbound route is primarily along a mandatory cycle lane. The inbound route employs cycle symbols from Kingsbury Road junction as far as the start of the grade separation, where an advisory cycle lane is provided before connecting into the shared surfaces at Salford Circus (where the Lichfield Road route connects to parallel routes D (Gravelly Hill to Short Heath) & E (Gravely Hill to Erdington)). From Kingsbury Road to Six Ways, the route primarily uses advisory cycle lanes both inbound and outbound save for a short section at Hunton Hill junction where cycle symbols have to be employed due to lack of carriageway space."

This section corresponds to pages 18 to 25 on the technical drawings.

  • Lichfield Road Main Corridor Phase 1B(i)

Created by Chris Lowe // 0 threads

"Two parts of this route fall into Phase 1B. The first part runs from Lancaster Circus where the route is on shared surfaces around and within the roundabout, a shared surface also extends northwards on the east side of Corporation Street through to Dartmouth Circus where the paths around and within the roundabout are also converted to shared surfaces. In addition cyclists may also use the bus lanes on Corporation Street between Lancaster Circus and Dartmouth Circus. From Dartmouth Circus, the route continues northwards on a shared surface on either side of Aston Road. The outbound route continues as a shared surface connecting into parallel route B (Birchfield to city centre, Dartmouth Circus) along Thomas Street as well as providing an uncontrolled crossing of Thomas Street to connect into the bus lane on Aston Road, extending as far as Park Lane roundabout. Inbound, the route from Park Lane roundabout utilises an short length of advisory cycle lane before joining the existing bus lane as far as Aston Road North. At this point cyclists have a choice of route to access the shared surfaces at Dartmouth Circus. They can opt to turn off the A38 into Aston Road where there is a connection to both the shared surfaces and the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, or they can continue within a proposed new bus lane which extends as far as the bus stop just prior to Dartmouth Circus where they then connect into the shared surfaces for Dartmouth Circus.
The final section runs from Park Lane/Rocky Lane roundabout, where cyclists use shared surfaces and an upgraded crossing (pelican to toucan) before connecting back into the existing bus lanes north of Park Road."

This section corresponds to sheets 1 to 9 of the technical drawings.

  • Lichfield Road Main Corridor Phase 1A

Created by Chris Lowe // 0 threads

"The Lichfield Road route follows the A5127 from the city centre to Erdington via Lancaster Circus, Corporation Street, Dartmouth Circus, Aston Road, Lichfield Road and Salford Circus. The Phase 1A works covers the section of the route from the B4144 Park Lane to Salford Circus via Lichfield Road.
The route is comprised mainly of cycling facilities within existing bus lanes. On Lichfield Road, crossings are improved at the Waterlink Boulevard roundabout and the Cuckoo Road junction to provide cyclists a safer bypass to these busy junctions. Short sections of shared footway also provide links to the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and Parallel Routes."

This section of the route (Phase 1A) covers sheets 9 to 18 of the technical drawings.

  • Parallel Route N - spur

Created by Chris Lowe // 0 threads

"This proposal will consist of minor measures, particularly signing and cycle logo markings on the road, to highlight a cycle route along non-classified roads parallel to the main A38 Bristol Road. This route will extend from the Ring Road at Lee Bank Middleway, along Ryland Road, Packenham Road, Arthur Road and Edgbaston Park Road to University of Birmingham. A separate spur via Somerset Road, Farquhar Road and Vincent Drive will also link to University Station and existing cycle facilities around the QE Hospital."
