  • Hipper Valley Trail: Walton Dam and Somersall Park Poor Surface

Created by Nicola Peck // 1 thread

This well-used trail is in desperate need of resurfacing. During spells of wet weather, it has large puddles at regular intervals and there is a particularly huge "mud bath" at the western end of Walton Dam just by the entrance to the woods. Currently (July 2014) the mud bath is reasonably, but not completely, dry but as recently as June it has been very muddy and was terrible over winter.

This is one of Chesterfield's major cycling routes and these conditions make it unreasonable to use it for transport journeys (ie. commuting and shopping) in normal clothes because the bike gets caked in mud and it splashes over your shoes and trousers, even with mudguards.

Alongside Walton Dam, I believe this path is supposed to be nominally 3 metres wide but vegetation has grown into the gravel surface making it significantly narrower (single file) in places.

The sloped tarmac section at the Walton Road end is suffering encroachment from overgrown vegetation and there is an unnecessary pinch-point part way down (a row of wooden posts) which could be opened up with perhaps only a single post if really necessary, or ideally none at all.

In Somersall Park, immediately to the south of the river bridge, there is a particularly rough patch of surface which, ironically, is the most recently resurfaced section of path. It's so incredibly rough that you have to be extra careful and slow if carrying delicate items like a laptop or fragile shopping (eg. soft fruit or eggs).

  • Jones "Parkland" development, Cheadle

Created by David Butler // 1 thread

Planning application submitted to Stockport Council re. Phase 4 of the "Parklands" development at Three Acres Lane (ref. DC053394). The proposals seem to purely focus on motor transport via the A34 as the means of access/egress. CycleWilmslow have long campaigned, with support from some CycleStockport members plus CTC and Sustrans for a traffic-free route from Cheadle to Handforth. This would go through this site (there is currently a footpath which would require minimal work to upgrade to bridleway standard).

  • No through route from Midland Terrace to estate cycle routes

Created by Simon Redding // 0 threads

The Jepson Road estate has great cycling infrastructure, but when you get to the west end of it, the path peters out and ends in a fence. Lots of cyclists then carry their bike over a fence and round the end of a culvert to Hartfield Close, but it would be better to just have a cycle gate in the fence straight on to Midland Terrace, which is likely to form part of NCN67 soon.

  • No top surface on this path

Created by Simon Redding // 1 thread

Since this site was abandoned by the bankrupt developer and not adopted by the council the path surface hasn't been put on and the path is a bit rough. Weeds are now starting to grow through the tarmac base layer.

  • Allow 2 way cycling along Stoke Quay and New Cut West

Created by Shaun McDonald // 1 thread

I've heard that there's a number of people who work in IP-City Centre who don't like cycling along the main road (Hawes Street, and Vernon Street) due to the traffic to get into town, or to the station, and would much prefer to take the quieter riverside route which has very little traffic. Dock Street already is two way for cycling, thus this would be a case of expanding the ability to cycle both directions.

  • Victoria Rd / Headingley Ln

Created by TMiles // 0 threads

Vehicles trying to turn right out of Victoria Road at this busy intersection often partially block the outbound lane of Headingley Lane (A660), causing an obstruction to all road users and forcing outbound cyclists to move into the main flow of traffic. The exit of this street should either be physically blocked to motorised vehicles or controlled by traffic lights in coordination with the nearby crossroads.

It must be recognised that any measures reducing the appeal of Victoria Rd to eastbound motor traffic may displace the problem to other access points onto Headingley Lane (for example its junction with Buckingham Road). It may be wise to first analyse the source of this traffic flow and encourage more appropriate routes.

Nonetheless, action does need to be taken as the junction in its current form is a risk to the relatively high numbers of cyclists on this radial route.

  • Park Road Contraflow

Created by Sarah Wood // 0 threads

This contraflow infrastructure is hazardous for several reasons: the path is very narrow - realistically around 0.5m wide, the cyclists is riding in the gutter, at risk of being doored and catching wing mirrors. What caught me out was a vehicle travelling North and turned right to access an entrance. Our sight lines were blocked by parked vehicles in parking bays to the right of the cycle path. Until this situation is addressed cyclists will continue to be vulnerable along this section of the road.

  • Filton Holiday Inn Access

Created by Eric Booth // 0 threads

Cycle path is broken up by cars coming off the dual carriageway into the hotel (before a barrier). So a cyclist not only has to stop, but then turn around and look behind them for cars careening off the dual carriageway into the hotel.

  • Portman and Handford Road junction phasing

    Created by Jon_B // 0 threads

Approaching from the South, there is cycle only access across Handford Road to continue North along Portman Road (shown in the photo) which allows access, amongst other things, to the new crossing of Norwich Road at Barrack Corner.

However, the lights allow motor traffic to turn left or right (not straight on) on a green signal which creates significant risk of conflict and left-hooks for cycles going straight on.

Unless cyclists take a strong position at the junction in the centre of the lane there is a risk of left-hooks from cars turning left.

This is made worse by the fact that there is a marked cycle lane and ASL which tends to encourage cyclists into a dangerous position at the left hand side of the road.

It is possible to avoid this by leaving Portman Road and using the Toucan crossing to cross Handford Road, but this isn't mandatory for cycles and the "No Entry except Cycles" signage suggests that using the on-road route is the most obvious option.

This issue could be partially resolved by an advance "cycle only" filter phase on the traffic lights, but other than that I can't see any more effective solution than a sign which makes it clear how the road layout works (i.e. that cars may turn left or right, but that cycles may be proceeding straight on).

  • Triangle Road rat running

    Created by Tom2 // 1 thread

Since the changes to Mare St at Westgate St some vehicles travel past the children's centre in Triangle Road, at excessive speeds, to avoid the traffic light at Mare St . Can Hackney Council add a restriction in Triangle Road.
