    Islington Council is planning to introduce a School Street Scheme to improve air quality around Moreland Primary School and create a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone. The Council would like to hear your thoughts on the proposal.

    What is a School Street Scheme?

    A School Street Scheme is where a road with a school temporarily closes to become a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school’s opening and closing times. By temporarily closing roads outside schools this will help to reduce congestion and pollution at the school gates as well as make it easier and safer for children to get to and from school.


    What is proposed for Moreland Street, Pickard Street and Gard Street?

    The proposal is to trial a temporary road closure on Moreland Street, Pickard Street and Gard Street between 8.30am to 9.15am plus 3.00pm to 4.00pm during school term time.

    Vehicles will not be able to enter the streets between these times unless they have been given an exemption. Residents and businesses who live and work on a school street will be able to register for an exemption as well as Blue Badge holders. The scheme will not operate in the school holidays or at weekends.

    Signs will inform drivers of the restrictions before the entrance to the closed street. Non-registered vehicles entering the street during the times of operation may be identified by camera and issued a penalty charge notice.

    Doing a quick scan of the document see some enoughing comments on segregated cycleway in high st, parking and a cycle networks.

    Unfortunately skip to the table at the end and it seems to be Medium to Long term objectives so real actions lacking.

    Any redevelopment should take the opportunity to create a
    segregated cycle path parallel to the High Street.

    7.29 Assisting a shift to more sustainable modes of transport would also be
    beneficial. Expanding the cycle network to create a segregated cycle way and
    increasing the pedestrian access and wayfinding for pedestrians to and from
    the High Street and Grove Park would also be welcome by-products, should a
    comprehensive redevelopment of the north side of the High Street take place.

    Guideline G9: Traffic and Transport
    The council will seek to improve the cycling network and pedestrian
    network throughout the Conservation Area as opportunities arise.

  • Consultation - Two way cycling on Twilley and Furmage Streets

    Wandsworth Council has opened a consultation on two-way cycling on Furmage Street and part of Twilley Street between Garratt Lane and Kimber Road in Wandsworth.  This would allow cyclists to avaoid having to make the tricky and dangerous right turn at the end of Kimber Road.   Wandsworth Cycling Campaign has been asking for this for several years.  The scheme is now being built under an Experimental Traffic order and includes physical measures using islands and armadillos to protect cyclists and direct and slow the motorists who rat-run through these small streets.  Please use this facility if it's on your route and feed back your comments to the consultation.  At the end of the experiential period in October the comments will decide whether the scheme should be made permanent or not.  Use the consultation to let them know if you appreciate it.  Let the Council and cyclewandsworth@gmail.com know of any problems or improvements you'd like.

  • Non existent cycle path

    There is no cycle track/lane the whole way down Tang Hall Lane, this makes it so dangerous to cycle as cars have no boundaries. Also, the cars parked at the side of the road are also a problem, having to swerve round them with oncoming cars in the opposite direction. Not cycle safe at all.

  • Traffic management works that are bad for cyclists and pedestrians

    I've recently moved to be the Lib Dem lead on the County Council's Highways & Infrastructure committee.

    I want to start working through in detail bad and good TM examples with officers to understand whether it's specific sets of contractors that are poor, whether they aren't compliant with the current policy and/or whether I agree with our officers about whether they are.

    For this I need a Cambridgeshire wide list of both good and bad, with locations - so it would be good to get some from Cambridge and other nearby Cycle Campaigns.

    In 2018, Waltham Forest Council was successful in securing initial funding from Transport for London (TfL) to develop a Liveable Neighbourhoods scheme in the Coppermill Area.

    For the past 12 months we have been engaging with residents, businesses and local accessibility groups and key stakeholders to find out what they would like to see improved. Based on this feedback we have created a set of proposals for the area. We are now starting a public consultation on our proposals and want everyone who lives or works in the area to have their say on the proposals to help shape the final improvements.

  • Twickenham to Brentford Cycleway

    London Borough of Hounslow is consulting on proposals to improve cycle facilities between Ivy Bridge and London Road.  LBH says:

    The council has received funding from Transport for London (TfL) to improve the existing cycle route from Ivy Bridge to London Road. The route forms part of the Hounslow Priority Cycle Network (route 11) as it offers a quiet, cleaner route for cycling to and from Brentford. The proposed improvements aim to create a safer more attractive route for cyclists.

    If progressed, these proposals will form part of TfL’s Cycleways network, with the section in the London Borough of Hounslow forming part of a wider cycle route between Twickenham and Brentford. Improvements to the section of the route between Ivy Bridge and Twickenham will be consulted on by The London Borough of Richmond in due course.

    Overview

    We are proposing to improve the junction of Trafalgar Avenue and A2 Old Kent Road.

    These changes would provide safer, better facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers. These benefits support the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy and Vision Zero. 

    It is the Mayor’s Vision Zero ambition that no one is killed or seriously injured on London’s streets by 2041. The Vision Zero approach is based on the fundamental conviction that loss of life and serious injuries are neither acceptable nor inevitable.  

    Our proposals also form part of the Mayor’s plan for Healthy Streets - a long-term vision to enable more people to walk, cycle and use public transport by making London’s streets healthier, safer and more welcoming.

    What are we proposing? 

    The main benefits of this scheme would be:

    • Safer and easier crossing at Trafalgar Avenue using a new ‘green man’ crossing 
    • Quicker, more reliable bus trips using a new extended westbound bus lane

    To achieve this, we would need to ban the left turn into Trafalgar Avenue from A2 Old Kent Road westbound towards the Bricklayers Arms. Our traffic counts indicate up to 44 vehicles per hour could be affected.  

    Full details include:

    • Introducing a ‘green man’ crossing at Trafalgar Avenue
    • Banning  the left turn into Trafalgar Avenue from A2 Old Kent Road westbound
    • Building out the pavement to support the banned left turn and pedestrian crossing
    • Extending the westbound bus lane from the Trafalgar Avenue bus stop (WJ) to the junction stop line
    • Providing a new Advanced Stop Line to help protect cyclists on Trafalgar Avenue
    • Widening the existing Advance Stop Line on A2 Old Kent Road across two traffic lanes instead of one

  • Southwark Station

    TfL and the London Borough of Southwark (LBS) are working together to deliver new improvements to the area bounded by Blackfriars Road, The Cut, Hatfields and Isabella Street.

    Several plans and proposals have been developed for this area in previous years, though none have been considered viable from a community or commercial perspective. Following approval to work towards a land swap agreement between TfL and LBS, we are now able to proceed with an exemplar development scheme, promoted by two public bodies who are working together to produce tangible benefits for the local area.

    Through two separate projects and planning applications, we wish to form a shared vision which will deliver new council homes, office and community space around Southwark station.

    Background

    The proposals are an important part of the Mayor of London Transport Strategy and Barnet’s ambition to get more people to walk and cycle. The proposals are guided by the Healthy Streets Approach(External link) which aims to encourage walking, cycling and public transport and make London greener, healthier and more pleasant.

    We have commissioned Sustrans Ltd(External link) as project coordinator and delivery partner for the Barnet section of the Cycleway route from Hornsey to North Finchley.

    Over the last two years Sustrans, in partnership with the council, engaged with residents in specific areas along the route to better understand local travel choices and concerns, road traffic and the quality of local streets.

    The proposals we are consulting on aim to address these issues, ensuring that improvements help to create an environment in which traffic is both reduced and slowed, and in which air quality is improved.

  • Cockfosters station major development

    NO MENTION OF IMPROVED BUS, PEDESTRIAN OR CYCLE ACCESS.

    TfL and Grainger plc are working in partnership to prepare plans for a residential development at the Cockfosters station car park site.

    - Utilise brownfield, public sector land to help deliver around 400 new private and affordable homes for rent;
    - Preserve and enhance the setting of the Grade II listed London Underground station;
    - Through quality design, create a positive relationship between any new development and Trent Park Conservation Area and
    Grade II listed park and gardens which form part of the Greenbelt;
    - To create new public and private spaces and improve the access point to the London Loop trail and Trent Park;
    - To encourage a shift to more sustainable modes of public transport and reduce the need to travel by car in the local area; and
    - To deliver a car-free development, with the exception of disabled car parking for both station users and new residents.

    An initial public event was held on 18th June. A detailed public exhibition is due autumn 2019 followed by a detailed planning application.

  • Cycle insurance

    I would be interested to know what other cyclists feel about the latest news that a cyclist has been successfully sued, by a pedestrian, who stepped into the road engrossed in her mobile phone and hit by the aforementioned man who tried to avoid her. Both parties injured but not seriously.He is facing £100000 compensation and legal costs and apparently this will ruin him financially. Importantly this has created a legal precedent which must affect us all.

    There is a crowd funding initiative to help him.

  • Safer Junctions - Kingsland Road and Balls Pond Road

    Overview

    We are proposing to make some changes to the junction between A10 Kingsland Road and Balls Pond Road, also known as Dalston Junction in Hackney.  

    Background

    Our Safer Junctions programme is reducing road danger at some of the most hazardous junctions in London. These junctions have high collision rates for vulnerable road users, including people walking and cycling. This programme directly contributes to our Vision Zero target to stop people from dying and being seriously injured on London’s road network by 2041.

    The objectives of the programme are to:

    • Reduce road danger and help eliminate Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) collisions
    • Help create streets where people feel safe to walk, cycle and use public transport
    • Make hostile junctions more welcoming and less dominated by motor vehicles, demonstrating the Healthy Streets Approach

    Why we are proposing to change the junction?

    In the three years up to 31 October 2016, 16 collisions occurred which resulted in people being injured. Five of these collisions involved pedestrians (three on the southern arm, one on the western arm and one on the northern arm). Historic trends also highlight a significant risk for cyclists, although this was not captured as a trend within the 2016/17 study period.

    Changing the layout of this junction would:

    • Reduce road danger by providing more space and priority to people walking or cycling
    • Restrict some vehicle movements to reduce conflict with other road users
    • Make journeys by foot to and from Dalston Junction easier with wider and more direct pedestrian crossings, encouraging more journeys by walking, cycling or public transport
    • Create a more welcoming retail and leisure environment, encouraging people to spend more time in the area

    What are we proposing?

    The proposals are to upgrade the existing junction in a number of ways:

    • Widening the footway to the north, east and western arms to improve the space for people walking
    • Installing coloured surfacing on all pedestrian crossing points to make it easier and safer to cross
    • A new cycle feeder lane into the Advanced Stop Line southbound on A10 Kingsland High Street
    • Banning the left turn eastbound from A10 Kingsland High Street into Dalston Lane for all vehicles except cycles
    • Raising the pedestrian crossing on Dalston Lane at the top of Dalston Square to slow speeds making it easier and safer for people to cross
    • Closing Kingsland Passage to motor vehicles and installing of new seating for places to stop and rest

    A plan showing all the proposed changes is below. These changes are intended to make the junction safer for all users, while significantly improving the environment for people walking and cycling, improving access to Dalston Junction Overground station.

    Healthy Streets  

    The changes proposed in this scheme are part of our commitment to deliver the Healthy Streets Approach. We are taking this approach to create a vibrant, successful city where the streets are welcoming to all and everyone can live active, healthy lives. The streets within this scheme and the proposed changes have been assessed by our designers against ten Healthy Streets Indicatorsusing our Healthy Streets Check for Designers tool. This tool assesses the layout of streets against thirty one measures which produce an overall Healthy Streets Check score out of 100. We use infographics to show the current score for the streets within this scheme and potential scores based on our proposed changes. The Healthy Streets results can be seen in the diagram below.

    Equality Impact Assessment

    We are subject to the general public sector equality duty set out in section 149 of the Equality Act 2010, which requires us to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations by reference to people with protected characteristics. The protected characteristics are: age, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

    In considering changes to the design of our streets, we closely consider the needs of all users throughout the design process and complete a draft Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA). The draft EqIA can be found below.

    Traffic impacts

    We have carried out analysis to understand the impact of the above proposals.  We predict no significant impacts to general traffic or bus journey times on the A10, Dalston Lane or Balls Pond Road. No significant impact on journey times for general traffic or buses travelling along the A10.

  • Finsbury Park to Highbury Fields Cycleway (QW10)

    We are now consulting on the Finsbury Park to Highbury Fields part of a future Cycleway between Farringdon and Palmers Green which has been developed in partnership with Transport for London. This new Cycleway route has been chosen because it is already very popular with cyclists and the numbers of people using this route are likely to increase.

    Our scheme would create a greener, more pleasant space for local people and a convenient, safer and more direct cycle route for cyclists of all abilities. The proposals have been designed to improve safety and comfort for cyclists and pedestrians by reducing conflict with motorised traffic.
    The improvements include fully protected cycle tracks, greening measures, widened footways, safer junctions, pedestrian crossing points and new signs/ road markings. All of these are designed to make cycling and walking easier, safer and more enjoyable.

    This route would link to other Cycleways in the London cycling network, including a complimentary signed route to the recent improvements at Highbury Corner, and make it easier for local people of all ages to cycle and walk to local facilities such as leisure centres and shops.

    The wider cycle lanes will allow people with adapted cycles such as cargo bikes or cycles for disabled people to use the route more easily and make it safer for all vulnerable road users in line with the Vision Zero agenda, which aims to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from our roads.
    What are Cycleways?

    Cycleways are continuous, clearly signed and convenient cycle routes which bring together all of the high-quality routes into a single London-wide network that is easy for everyone to understand and use.

    1. Blackstock Road/ Ambler Road Junction: Traffic lights would be introduced at the junction with new pedestrian crossings, providing early release for cyclists and cycle boxes on all arms. This design will significantly improve conditions for pedestrian and cyclists crossing Blackstock Road and allow cyclists to continue on the Cycleway route towards Finsbury Park. This proposal will involve the removal of a parking space on Somerfield Road and the Electric Vehicle charging point along Ambler Road would need to be relocated. The section towards Finsbury Park will be consulted on separately by Hackney Council. (see map section 1)

    2. Gillespie Road/ Avenell Road Junction: Priority at the junction would be reversed so that vehicles on Gillespie Road would give-way to vehicles on Avenell Road. This design would also raise the carriageway to footway level which would make it easier for crossing pedestrians and cyclists using the Cycleway to turn into Gillespie Road. (see map section 2)

    3. Gillespie Road Trial Arrangement: The ongoing trial point no-entry preventing traffic travelling westbound on Gillespie Road past the junction with St Thomas’s Road, is not being formally consulted on as part of the Cycleway proposals but we welcome feedback. (see map section 5)

    4. Drayton Park/ Aubert Park Junction: The existing mini-roundabout at the junction would be removed and changed to a priority (give-way) junction. The carriageway will be raised to footway level with pedestrian crossing points on all sides of the junction. This will raise awareness of the new Cycleway route and also make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road. The junction would prioritise movements on Drayton Park and traffic along Aubert Park would give-way. (see map section 3)

    5. Martineau Road – Aubert Park: Fully protected cycle facility at least 2.2m would be provided for northbound cycles between Martineau Road and Aubert Park. The proposal allows for southbound cyclists to mix comfortably with general traffic by adopting a position in the centre of the traffic lane, making them more visible to other traffic. The proposed design will maintain the existing number of parking spaces, however some parking bays would be relocated elsewhere between Martineau Road and Aubert Park to make room for improved cycle facilities. For the purposes of consultation, two design options for protecting cyclists are being considered, which we would like you to comment on. Examples are given below to illustrate the different design options. (see map section 3)

    • Kerb protected cycle tracks: the cycle track would be at the same level as the carriageway with a kerb installed to separate vehicles and cyclists. See below example from Cycle Superhighway 2 between Stratford and Aldgate.

    • Stepped cycle tracks: The cycleway would be installed halfway between the carriageway and footway. See below example from Midland Road in LB Camden.

    6. Benwell Road – Martineau Road: Fully protected cycle facilities would be introduced in both directions on this section of Drayton Park. The cycle tracks would be at least 2m wide in each direction and will also include a small strip that will physically protect cyclists from parked vehicles. The proposed design will maintain the existing number of parking spaces and access arrangements along Drayton Park. Existing zebra crossings will be raised to footway level improving pedestrian accessibility and safety. (see map section 3,4)

    7. Benwell Road/ Drayton Park Junction: The existing junction would be converted to a ‘continental-style’ roundabout which would include protected cycle facilities throughout the junction and new cycle crossings on all arms of the junction. The design will also significantly improve conditions for pedestrians by introducing new zebra crossings on all arms, raised surface and widened footways reducing crossing distances. (see map section 5)

    8. Highbury Crescent Signed Route: A complimentary signed route is proposed to connect up to the recent improvements at Highbury Corner. (see map section 6)
