Issues

This section lists issues - problems on the street network and related matters.

Issues always relate to some geographical location, whether very local or perhaps city-wide.

You can create a new issue using the button on the right.

Listed issues, most recent first:

  • King Cross Gyratory Redesign

Issue now superseded by this issue discussing TfL's consultation: http://www.cyclescape.org/issues/2040-changes-to-the-king-s-cross-gyratory

TfL, Camden Council, and Islington Council are currently developing plans to redesign the Kings Cross Gyratory and address some of the failures of the current gyratory layout.

The current environment is very poor, and a real barrier to cycling. Fast, and congested one way traffic with 10-20,000 PCUs per day, and no cycle provision currently. Accessing the station from the east is almost impossible.

The area has seen a number of cycle collisions including at least one fatality.

To pre-empt the consultation due late 2015, we wanted to discuss what would be the best outcome for people on bikes.

More information will be added when we know more, but for now, ideas please.

  • City Centre Infrastructure - General

    Created by esde84 // 1 thread

On the 5th September NewCycling will be holding a city centre infrastructure safari at 10am looking at infrastructure within the area.

    Full details are here: http://newcycling.org/event/city-centre-in…ari-cycle-ride/

If there are any specific issues you are aware of please discuss them below, if discussed before the event, they will be considered for discussion during the safari.

This can also be used to discuss city centre infrastructure for those who cannot attend the event.

  • Lack of cycle routes to Cambridge Business Park, Waterbeach

Created by David Green // 1 thread

My employer is planning to relocate from central cambridge to the Cambridge Business Park (near Waterbeach). There is currently no decent cycle (or footpath!) access to this business park which avoids riding along the A10. I am a confident cyclist but I am not looking forward to riding to work along sections of the A10.

Are there any plans for cycle route construction which the campaign can, perhaps, help accelerate?

  • Buckingham Palace - Spur Road

Created by Colin Wing // 1 thread

Spur Road and the road in front of Buckingham Palace form a section of the East-West Cycle Superhighway between Constitution Hill and Birdcage Walk.

The plans that Transport for London presented to the public for consultation in February-March 2015 failed to include any specific proposals for this section. Following successful campaigning by cyclists, TfL published proposals on 20th August 2015 for consultation up till 4th October 2015.

  • Park Row, Farnham - asserting right of way

Created by Thomas Lancaster // 0 threads

Single lane 2-way lane requiring vehicles to give way to other vehicles already on the lane travelling in the opposite direction. This is rarely respected by car drivers who will drive straight towards cyclists. Cycle symbols on the carriageway black-top will raise driver awareness that this lane is part of a designated cycle route.

  • Bear Lane contraflow

Created by Thomas Lancaster // 0 threads

Coming off the Scholars Greenway out of Farnham Park, cyclists currently have to detour along Park Row and the heavily trafficked Castle Street and The Borough to get to The Woolmead, East Street development and South Street to the Station. Bear Lane is wide enough to accept a contraflow to The Woolmead. The Woolmead is currently one way but designated for 2-way traffic as part of the East Street (Brightwells) development.

  • Summers Road cycletrack

Created by Jenny Barnes // 0 threads

The route along Summers rd between Bourne Rd and the New pond Rd. could have a rather narrow two way cycle track on the southern pavement. If the parked cars were removed, it could be a good width. This would help provide a good route to Broadwater School and the Godalming Leisure Centre. If the road was made one way only (south east bound) for cars for the section from New Pond Rd to the school, where it's quite narrow, that would eliminate a dangerous turn out into the NPRd, and provide more space for a cycletrack in that section.

  • 'Arthur' crossing of Castle Street

Created by Thomas Lancaster // 0 threads

Not strictly a cycle issue as cyclists can turn left up Castle Street from Long Garden Walk (and vis versa) using the build-out on the west side of Castle Street. However for our fellow Scholars Greenway users the lack of a build-out on the east side of Castle Street leaves them stranded mid-crossing with their way blocked by parked cars. Especially problematic for pushchair and mobility scooter users and the nearby Farnham 3rd Scout Group who want to cross and get access to Farnham Park.

  • Moore St Roundabout

Created by WildNorthlands // 1 thread

Moore st was one of our first roundabouts to be cycle-ised and is showing its age. The subways are too narrow, the turns are too acute and the sightlines are poor. There are personal safety issues in the evening (although having cyclists come through on a regular basis makes it safer for pedestrians) and there is poor connectivity with the rest of the city in some directions. One desire line is from Waitrose car park which involves going up a pedestrian ramp, crossing the access road and then going down the cycle lane in the wrong direction into a blind corner. There is no clear way to get from the roundabout to the Sharrow/Heeley area, and the route onto Moore St towards Ecclesall Rd dumps you into a bus stop on the dual carriageway - as you continue towards Ecclesall Rd you have contend with a sliproad onto Summerfield St with traffic theoretically decelererating from 40 to 30 but often doing higher speeds than that. A parallel cycle route through the Wards Brewery site is hard to access and has several roads crossing it with no priority for cyclists or pedestrians.

    Long-term solution:-

Fill the thing in and put in a dutch-style roundabout with proper crossings

    Short-term solutions?

  • Weyside Greenway - Guildford Rd to Kimbers Lane

Created by Thomas Lancaster // 0 threads

The NCN 22 final route (Weyside Greenway) through the Farnham town centre needs to connect from the Guildford Road to Kimbers Lane (and thence the riverside path). The Guildford Road at this location has no footway and parked cars on the north side. A alternative via Guildford Road Trading Estate only connects to Kimbers Lane via a 1m wide path.

Path widening would require taking a 40m long by 1m wide strip of land from the leasehold of Rowan House at the NW end of the Trading Estate. Alternatives welcome as this is the only fundamental block for NCN 22 to run through the town centre, linking many of its amenities.

  • Ranelagh Drive - Isleworth Prom Blocked Crossover

    Created by Paul L // 1 thread

In order to get from Ranelagh Drive to the shared use Isleworth Prom you need to cross the footway. A dropped kerb has been provided but this is unmarked and is usually obstructed by parked vehicles. At a similar location in LB Hounslow the crossover is marked by bollards in the road encouraging motorists to leave a gap here and the same procedure could and should be used.

    4. A new 5-metre part-width Advanced Stop Line (ASL) with early release (a few seconds) on Finchley Road for cyclists travelling southbound.

    5. Widen the existing pedestrian crossing to 3.2 metres on the southern arm of the Finchley Road junction

    6. Enlarge the footway on the south-west corner of the junction,

  • Ponderosa Cycle Link

Created by WildNorthlands // 1 thread

Creating a cycle route through the Ponderosa would shorten journeys between the University and Hillsborough and avoid a tricky junction (Upperthorpe Rd/Martin St)

  • Birley Space for Cycling request

Created by Dexter Johnstone // 1 thread

Implement a 20mph limit on the roads surrounding Birley Community College and Birley Community Primary School to enable children to walk and cycle to school safely. The 20mph would apply to Birley Moor Road, Birley Lane, Fox Lane and all the residential roads that they encircle.
