  • Richmond Circus pinch point

Created by Paul James // 1 thread

The shared use pavement is pinched very tight at this point where pedestrians are crossing the road and cycles are going straight on.

Visibility of pedestrians and bikes from Larkfield Rd is blocked by the building.

Continue cycleway along Richmond Circus south side.
Provide more cycle/pavement width by moving carriageway northwards or reducing to 2 lanes.

  • Wandsworth to Teddington Quietway consultation

    Created by jon_events // 1 thread

You can see the detailed proposals bit by bit on the link below.

I've roughly mapped out the proposed route. It essentially follows an existing part of the LCN with a few minor tweaks. Sadly no new modal filters appear to be proposed. Sinusoidal humps at the beginning of the route in Wandsworth I fear will do little to deter the speedsters.

Feel free to add your thoughts below.

  • Richmond Athletic Association carpark exit

Created by Paul James // 1 thread

The exit from the car park crosses the shared use path and is blind from the drivers POV if they stop at the give way markings. This means that drivers will move blindly across the shared use path without being able to see cycles moving along the path.

The solution is to close the gate to motor traffic.

The carpark is accessible from both the driveway to Pools on the Park and from Kew Foot Road and the entrance from Pools on the Park would appear adequate to act as both an entrance and an exit.

  • Quietway 1: Ham - Teddington

Created by Simon Munk // 2 threads

    Richmond council says:

The previous Mayor of London’s Vision for Cycling (2013), a 10-year plan to deliver cycling improvements across London with spending set to total £913m by 2022, announced that a cross-London network of high-quality guided cycle routes would be implemented. This was two-fold; high capacity Superhighways, mostly on main roads, for fast commuters, and slightly slower Quietways on low-traffic side streets, for those wanting a more relaxed journey, providing two clearly branded routes, together composing the ‘Central London Grid’.

Unlike the previous London Cycle Network, Quietways will be direct, better-surfaced and clearly signposted. The Quietway network will also include new off-road greenway routes through parks and along waterways, to be used for recreation and by families. Richmond’s natural assets particularly align to this purpose. Quietways aim to change the nature of cycling. Therefore, the routes will be pleasant and interesting to cycle on, showcasing hidden corners of London. Borough police resources, local community safety budgets and TfL-funded Safer Transport Command officers, lighting, CCTV coverage and patrols will ensure people feel safe using Quietways at night. Thus, it is hoped that Quietways will attract new types of cyclists and beginner cyclists. Quietways are also designed to benefit pedestrians and other road users.

The first Quietway route, from Waterloo to Greenwich, launched in June 2016 and seven Quietways are due to be completed by 2017. Richmond is proposing initially to introduce two new Quietways. TfL has agreed to fund Quietways 1 and 2 as part of ‘Phase 2’ of the Quietway programme. This consultation introduces Quietway 1, which will run between Ham and Teddington. The route comes from the neighboring borough of Wandsworth, beginning here at Richmond Park’s Ham Gate, and finishing by Bushy Park, crossing the river at Teddington Lock.

Community consultation and engagement events took place in July of this year where the proposed route was introduced. Having taken on board the feedback from the initial engagement, this new consultation seeks to present the updated proposals for Quietway 1. We welcome views from Richmond’s residents, businesses, stakeholders and visitors on the proposals.

This consultation is presented in conjunction with Richmond’s Cycling Strategy, currently also under consultation; the Quietways will help to realise Strategy Objective A. There will also be joint consultation events where there will be the opportunity to give feedback.

  • Star & Garter Hill junction

Created by Simon Munk // 1 thread

    Richmond Council says:

"As part of the development works which have been undertaken in the area, the Council has secured funding to improve the footway and carriageway in the immediate vicinity of Star & Garter Hill / Richmond Gate. The improvements works are planned to take place in July and will include: resurfacing the footway and carriageway, upgrading the existing traffic islands / refuges, implementing a new footway that joins up to Richmond Park, and general improvements to the signage and street furniture. As part of this works, there will also be the introduction of a drop off / collection bay outside the Royal Star & Garter development."

    No apparent cycling improvements.

  • Off-road Route between Ham and Richmond

Created by Kate // 1 thread

In order to avoid the muddy and sometimes flooded route along the riverside path it is possible to use a tarmac path across Petersham Field. However, at both ends of the field there are kissing gates which mean that larger bikes, bikes with child seats, cargo bikes, double buggies or larger prams as well as wheelchairs are either unable or struggle to get through the gate. The gates create an unappealing obstruction for "normal" bikes too.

I have been told by councillors and council officials that the gates are to keep in the cows which graze for half the year in the field. In Cambridge all the cows grazing on common land are kept in using cattle grids. Why can't this solution be used here?

  • Quiet Routes into Central Richmond from Ham

Created by Kate // 1 thread

This spot is part of the route that has potential to help people cycling avoid congested unappealing George Street in order to get to Richmond station or other parts of Richmond from the riverside. When you come up Friars Lane from the riverside you reach a junction where the traffic is one way away from central Richmond.

If you follow the one way system left around the Green you add at least 5 minutes to your journey time. You cannot turn right and take the quicker route because it is one way. You also cannot turn right up King Street to join George Street because that is also one way.
You also cannot go straight across the path on the Green as this is officially a footpath.

There is more than one possible solution here: a contraflow for cyclists on the side of the Green nearest to George Street. A cycle path alongside the footpath straight across the Green.

King Street would also benefit from a contraflow which would open up the options for cyclists - particularly when the riverside route is flooded.

  • The Royal Parks' draft Movement Strategy

Created by Simon Munk // 2 threads

    The Royal Park says:
"The Royal Parks is embarking on an exciting and ambitious journey to develop a Movement Strategy that will influence movement and transportation throughout our parks and London.

    What is the Movement Strategy?

The Movement Strategy will set a long-term vision for how park visitors will move within, access and subsequently experience the parks.

The strategy will include a comprehensive exploration of all movement and access related issues and opportunities that are relevant to the parks both now and into the foreseeable future.

This will include (but is not limited to) increasing safety for all park users, reducing the impact of vehicle-based traffic and reducing conflict between different modes.

    How will it be developed?

To develop the strategy, we will utilise an evidence-based approach to explore all current and future movement opportunities. Input from key stakeholders, including the general public, will be a critical component in exploring possibilities, conflicts and issues that will inform the creation of the strategy.

Engagement Phase One – Now Open.

We are seeking input from key partners including the general public, Transport for London, neighbouring boroughs and all interested parties. This input is a critical component in exploring possibilities, conflicts and issues that will inform the creation of the strategy. This discussion paper sets out the draft aim and principles for our Movement Strategy. These summarise our aspirations and provide the basis for developing a series of bold projects and proposals across all eight parks."

  • Richmond Hill and Ormond Road - 2 way for cycling

Created by Ross // 1 thread

Richmond Hiil and Ormond Road provide direct routes into Richmond town centre. However they are one way and force cyclists to take detours to get into town. Making these roads 2 way for cycling with contraflow cycle lanes would improve movement for cycles and remove some conflict which exists where cyclists ride on the pavement.

  • Blind Corner - Richmond Riverside leading to Friars Lane

Created by Kate // 2 threads

This corner is little used by motor traffic but those that do use it often go round this corner too fast. There is no pavement and high walls on both sides of the road. Cyclists and pedestrians come from the riverside path are not expecting motor traffic so signage is needed.

There is a particular danger from delivery lorries and rubbish lorries which use this route to deliver to the pubs along this stretch of the river. I had a near miss with a Night Freight lorry.

  • Eton Street, George Street and Paradise Road - Make 2 way for cycling

Created by Ross // 1 thread

Cycling around Richmond town centre is tortuous on a bicycle due to the one way system. To encourage even greater cycling journeys to Richmond town centre business the one way system should be redesigned to allow 2 way cycling for bicycles on Eton Street, Paradise Road and George Street. Ideally this should be achieved with segregated cycle contraflows

  • Unmarked path to Richmond Park from Queen's Road

Created by MB // 1 thread

There is a useful but unmarked path from Queen's Road to Richmond Park and through to Sheen. It is used by pedestrians and cyclists & I have never seen it on any map! From Lower Grove Road, it takes you to the park via Bog Gate, or Sheen via Sheen Common.

If it were better marked on maps, better maintained & wider in places, it could form a useful section of Richmond's (paved, segregated, Dutch style?) cycling network.

  • London Fields traffic reduction

    Created by Harry Fletcher-Wood // 1 thread

Hackney Council are consulting on further traffic reduction measures in the London Fields area. These include:
    - a school street outside London Fields Primary School
    - a bus gate on Lansdowne Drive (restricting access to buses and cycles only)
    - a banned left turn from Mare Street onto Richmond Road.

Please let me have your thoughts by Saturday, 6th January, 2018, so I can draft a response accordingly.

  • Elsinore Way/A316 - TFL consultation on removal of section of cycle track

    Google streetview link: http://goo.gl/maps/Fy2cs

    From TFL:
Elsinore Way junction with the A316 Lower Richmond Road

Please find attached a letter that will be sent to local residents regarding proposed changes to the junction of Elsinore Way and the A316 Lower Richmond Road.

We propose to cut back the kerb immediately to the east (upstream) of the junction, to allow a better turning circle and prevent turning vehicles coming onto the kerb and the cycle path. A shared cycle/pedestrian space will be marked around this junction. Please see the plan attached.

We are consulting the local community for their opinions regarding the proposals and we would also like to know your views. The consultation is open until 21 June 2013. Please let us know your views on the proposals by visiting our consultation website at consultations.tfl.gov.uk/streets/elsinoreway, emailing us at stengagement@tfl.gov.uk (with ‘Elsinore Way’ in the Subject line).

  • Thames towpath - Richmond-Ham

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

The towpath from Richmond to Teddington lock is currently unappealing and dangerous. These photos were taken in May and the path is a lot worse after in winter or after a spring tide.

It is sufficient for people on mountain bikes who do not mind getting muddy, but not easy for children, older people, less confident cyclists, pedestrians with buggies, cyclists on cargo bikes etc to navigate - basically all the vulnerable road users who would most benefit from avoiding the busy, fast moving traffic on the narrow winding Petersham Road.

I take this route to work and I have to plan for the fact that I will get covered in mud every morning, and take it very slowly because it is so bumpy. I have seen pedestrians and those with child buggies climbing over the flood wall and walking on the grass on Petersham field in order to avoid this path. When I have my child in the bike seat I get off and walk the section between Ham House and River Lane that is pictured as I don't feel safe.

With a bit of thought this path has the potential to be an excellent car-free cycling and walking route that would tempt people out of their traffic jammed cars on Petersham Road.

  • Electric Scooter Trial in Camden

Created by Jean Dollimore // 1 thread

On the 7th June 2021 Transport for London launched a trial on the use of rental electric scooters across some parts of London.

E.g. in Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Richmond, Kensington and Chelsea and Tower Hamlets (ride through only) and Canary Wharf.

The City of London and Westminster plan to join the trial on the 5th July 2021.

Camden Council is now consulting on taking part in this trial.

Service operators Dott, Lime and Tier.

The e-scooters would be unlocked through the operator’s app on the user’s mobile phone and would be required to be parked within a designated parking bay at the end of a journey.

They would be permitted on public highways in Camden and cycle lanes and will share cycle contraflow facilities.

They would not be permitted on pavements or any public pedestrian space.

Riders would need to be 18 years of age or over and have a full or provisional driving licence to rent an e-scooter

Speed would be limited to 12.5mph. GPS managed speeds..

They would be parked on street in assigned dockless hire parking bays, GPS enforcement of using bays

  • Richmond Green - one way street

Created by Andrew Woodward // 0 threads

Cyclist coming from the river come up Friars Lane exit and have to currently route right round Richmond Green because it is one way. Many do not and simply cycle across the green. The path across the green should be formally opened up to cyclists - as a share path with pedestrian priority - or a seperate track provided along the south side of Richmond Green.

  • Twickenham to Brentford Cycleway

Created by Hounslow Cycling Campaign // 1 thread

London Borough of Hounslow is consulting on proposals to improve cycle facilities between Ivy Bridge and London Road.  LBH says:

The council has received funding from Transport for London (TfL) to improve the existing cycle route from Ivy Bridge to London Road. The route forms part of the Hounslow Priority Cycle Network (route 11) as it offers a quiet, cleaner route for cycling to and from Brentford. The proposed improvements aim to create a safer more attractive route for cyclists.

If progressed, these proposals will form part of TfL’s Cycleways network, with the section in the London Borough of Hounslow forming part of a wider cycle route between Twickenham and Brentford. Improvements to the section of the route between Ivy Bridge and Twickenham will be consulted on by The London Borough of Richmond in due course.

  • Petersham Road

Created by Dylan // 1 thread

There is a fairly good cycle lanes from Kingston towards Richmond up until you reach the Richmond Council border where Richmond Road (A307) turns into the Upper Ham Road (A307) and eventually Petersham Road (A307). At traffic lights along this route there are reserved areas for cyclists but along the roads there is nothing to remind drivers that cyclists share the road especially when the road narrows after Sandy Lane through Petersham. The road surface here is terrible and the speed bumps are pointless because some driver sprint between the bumps.

The best solution would be to remove the cyclists from this route altogether by upgrading the Thames Path to create a proper cycle path along the River Thames towards Richmond that currently stops at Teddington Lock. If a cycle/foot bridge linking Ham with Twickenham was built over Eel Pie along this route it would create an obvious link for those want to reach Twickenham.
